Time to vote on what we'll be painting next month! Took my inspiration this month from 40k's mission selection, though of course, there's no requirement to enter 40k minis, the titles are just there to serve as guidelines.

The Relic: The model must be one that is in some way considered holy or revered by its allies. For example, this could be a D&D Cleric, a Chaos Spring Champion, a Space Marine Chaplain, a Nomad Reverend ect.

Big Guns Never Tire: The model must be carrying some significant firepower. Anything goes from a pair of Grots comically trying to wield a Lascannon to a mighty Baneblade superheavy tank, a Dwarf engineer with a collection of blunderbusses to a great cannon or trebuchet. Dakka Dakka Dakka!

Purge The Alien: Your model must be human, or something built, created or domesticated by humans (androids, robots ect) for the former, horses, dogs ect for the latter).

The Spoils of War: Your model should carry, wear or be using some trophy or item gained by defeating a foe. This could be as simple as an Orc who's 'acquired' an Elven sword or some Dwarven armour, or as complex as a mighty Space Marine hero covered in totems, trophies and the laurels of victory.

As usual, poll will run for 2 days, so what do we want to paint in April?

While 40k focused, I think there is a lot of wiggle room there. The most restrictive one I think is “Purge the Alien” as that’s very human focused. Would be rough for someone with a primarily xenos/demi-human collection.

I also voted for big guns, but could probably get something for any of them.

Big guns. I finally finished prepping the quad heavy bolter rapier for my Deathwatch over the weekend and really want to have a go at it.

Well that raises the bar. The problem, sadly, is that most of our fellow Dakkites are probably too young to appreciate the awesomeness of AC/DC.

40K centric and sci fi centric.
I'd struggle to say any but Relic would fit fantasy.

I voted for Alien because I want to take a second crack at Yarrick. I only painted his eye last time, so hopefully I can finish him.

I think there's room for fantasy in there as well. Most fantasy settings have religious types and at least some kind of human (I struggle to think of a setting without humans), and the dominant wargaming ones (AoS/WFB and WM) have plenty of guns/artillery/siege weapons ect. Spoils of War is dead easy to do for fantasy, an Orc with some severed heads on a pole or a human magician with an elven staff or a dwarf with an Orc's battleaxe, all sorts could fit there, I think.

Remember, these themes are intended to be very open to interpretation.

Just out of curiosity when is it not 40k centric? And also, what is wrong with 40k? It is totally awesome.

Argh. Big guns and especially the Purge the Alien one feel awfully restrictive as I'm moving away from painting 40k...

Got to throw in my vote for relic, as I think the whole gratuitous trophy thing is very GW-esque and not found so much in other ranges.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm using these events as impetus to paint my mountains of unpainted loots... which spreads beyond 40k. There's nothing inherently wrong with 40k, just that 40k centric topics makes it hard to submit any Reaper, Kingdom Death, Age of Sigmar, LOTR, Malifaux and WM/H subjects. Looking at this month's topics, just based on my collection alone (don't own any AoS), I could muster models from the following ranges to paint:

The Relic: 40k, Infinity (arguable), Kingdom Death (arguable), Reaper (a stretch), Warmachine
The Big Guns: Warmachine (arguable), Infinity (arguable, esp since most guns in the current range aren't physically imposing), 40k
Purge the Alien: 40k, Infinity (arguable), Warmachine/Hordes (a stretch)
Spoils of War: 40k

Its too bad, can't really fit LOTR or Malifaux into these slots easily.

A Protoss colony world

I voted for Big Guns, but I think I have something for any of the categories.
The Relic: Dark Angels Interrogator Chaplain on Bike
Big Guns Never Tire: Tau XV104 Riptide Battlesuit
Purge the Alien: Just about anything from my SM collection, or I could dig out some of my LotR stuff
Spoils of War: Some of my DV Chaos minis have skulls on them that are presumably trophies, plus I have a couple of bits I could add to bases for something (an Ork skull and a Genestealer skull that came in the SM Sniper Scouts kit).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

Remember gents, alien has a wider usage than just indicating other species from space. It can simply mean someone from elsewhere or an outsider.

Seems perfect for historical models to me. My degree is in history and one thing that's always stood out is the pervasive hostility towards others based on national borders. eg. You've got some 16th century Spanish pikemen, well, they were none to keen on the French or Dutch during a lot of that period. Purge the alien!

Alien is also used as an adjective to mean strange and unusual. Do you have any factions/models that would be hell bent on enforcing conformity/normality?

You don't have to go with literalist 40k interpretations if you don't want to, though it seems most of us have the model collections to do so!

3 way tie as I write this. Purging the Alien with never-tiring Relic guns?

Kinda specific, but I might be able to come up with something.

Never have all of the choices been 40k oriented for the poll. This month I got away with painting special naval forces for the Marines theme.

I used to like 40k before playing Infinity. Now I can't see how I stayed awake during a game of 40k. It has sooooo much more depth and intricacies. YRMV of course.

YAAAAAAAAAA for Big Guns!

To clarify again, the titles are 40k-themed just as the idea occurred to me and gave a good range of themes to pick from, the challenges themselves are open to absolutely anything that fits the description. They were definitely not done with the mind to limit or exclude anyone from entering!

I voted big guns! I have basecoated Lootaz and tons of Flash Gitz. Are those suitable?

INSANE army lists still available!!!! Now being written in 8th edition format! I have Index Imperium 1, Index Imperium 2, Index Xenos 2, Codex Orks Codex Tyranids, Codex Blood Angels and Codex Space Marines!
PM me for an INSANE (100K+ points) if you desire.

I think the amount of replies from people who didn't initially understand this may demonstrate how willing we are to be confused.

And I disagree that "Purge the Alien" and big guns are easily interpreted into fantasy. They're possible, but the brain doesn't go there initially.

I voted in for Big guns.

I think you could easily take some Infinity, Warmachine or AoS stuff for it. 40k certainly has lots of options, but a Hellcannon or Warjack certainly would be suitable too.

Toss up for me between relic and big guns never tire... Ultimately voted for relic though.

Still only a few votes in it and a day left to vote, it could go either way yet! Went for Relic as I want to do Chaplain Cassius, but the Imperial Fist with Frag Cannon fits the bill for Big Guns, so I'm good with either. The other two might be a bit problematic, but it looks like those aren't really in the running (though I've seen comebacks from bigger leads before! )
