Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
Apologies for the lateness of this poll, that old Real Life thing has been rather busy recently! Nonetheless, here we go, as a vast array of clanking walkers, thundering tanks and powered-up battlesuits assemble for the voting for the theme Metal and Wheels. As always, you can pick as many entries as you like to vote for, for any reason you like. So if it's the paintjob that catches your eye, the quality of the conversion, the effort on show, the choice of miniature or anything else. Likewise, any feedback you'd like to leave for the entrants is always appreciated, as are any gallery votes you want to throw the way of the many images that link through to the Dakka Gallery. The entrants: queen_annes_revenge: Imperial Pilot Rybrook: Blood Angels Razorback Nevelon: Ultramarines Hunter Captain Brown: Sisters of Battle Tanks DrGiggles: Killa Kanz Bellerophon: Blacktalon Gunship Jamie Shred: Fallout Bots Paradigm: Rebel AT- RT Walker ZergSmasher: Crisis Suit Team MacPhail: Sisters of Battle Rhinos Jadenim: Blood Bowl Deathroller Deadshot: Ork Trukks ssisal: Imperial Tanks DV8: Lamenters Dreadnought Theophony: Thundrik’s Profiteers Midget Gems: Ork Warbikes Stormatious: Metal Shack feltmonkey: Imperial Knight Duekofbeer: Ork Mecha-Nob Maharg: Ravenwing Biker Modock: Hollow Men Chris56: Gundam Diorama Peregrine: Macharius Tank vejut: Cannon

@Paradigm. It's a Lamenters Deredeo, not Imperial Fists!
My votes were for QAR, Paradigm, Felt Monkey, and Peregrine (I know, I broke my 3 vote this time!)
@QAR it's a great fig (I wish I still had mine), and I love the simple vignette you have him on.
@Paradigm I'm not usually one for super gritty work, but your piece subject in combination with your style and basing works really well to sell the theme and mood!
@Felt Monkey. I love the red you achieved on the knight. It's like... Tsss sexy. ;D
@Peregrine this thing looks real, it's unbelievable! Well done!

A really high standard all-round this month. Great work everyone! Thanks for the feedback, DV8.
queen_annes_revenge - A nice atmospheric piece. I like what you've done with the plinth. It's weird Nevelon not being up here at the top.
Rybrook - Bright and clean. All the space marine flavours of tank are tricky to do anything with. Your ultra-bold approach emphasises the classic silhouette and makes for a striking model. Good use of transfers and spot colours too.
Nevelon - Ah here you are. You entered later deliberately because I marveled at your ability to always post the first proof last month, didn't you? Nice clean work. My only criticism is that the blue basetone looks like it could have done with another coat to get it really smooth.
Captain Brown - More Rhino pattern tanks. These are great, super smooth and clean, with good spot colours and eye-catching details. You've picked out every rivet! Great job.
DrGiggles - Those are such great models, aren't they? I might try to get one just to paint it, as it's such a classic ork thing. You've done a good solid job on them.
Bellerophon - Super clean, neat work as always from you, Bellephron. It's really nicely done, but I think just lacks that bit of extra flair you tend to put into your entries. Still great, mind you.
Jamie Shred - Really lovely work, so grubby! They're grungier than Alice In Chains doing a medley of Sub Pop hits. I really like how you contrast this with the black gloss dome on the one droid.
Paradigm - So much good stuff this month! This is great too. I love the pose, and that he's nicked a scout trooper's helmet. The weathered look really suits the Star Wars universe.
ZergSmasher - A nice looking little squad of Crisis Suits. Nice contrast of dark and bright colours, and I like the little yellow Tau designs on the armour.
MacPhail - Seriously impressive to finish three tanks in a month, especially with all those special doors and stuff. They all look nice, a good solid job. I do find though that applying wash to the whole of a rhino tends to cause problems - you get tide marks on the flat panels. Going round all the recesses can work a bit better, but then you'd probably still be working on the first one, never mind having finished three.
Jadenim - A really nice classic Deathroller. It's well done overall, but my favorite touch is the clumps of grass stuck to the blood on the tracks.
Deadshot - A lovely, grubby and battered Trukk. I love the numberplate.
ssisal - Another one who has painted an impressive number of tanks. I like the whitewash effect you've done on the two artillery guns. I don't know why you use that metallic green colour though, it kind of looks like tinsel to my eyes. It might just be me though.
DV8 - Gorgeous - the beautifully-judged yellow in particular. All the freehand designs are amazing. Another great entry from you.
Theophony - Nice work on all those fiddly details and pipes. It might be worth giving all the red lenses a spot of orange in the middle to make them pop as a contrast colour. They look good, though!
Midget Gems - Again, impressive to get three such detailed models finished in a month! Strong colours, great detail work, and the bases are fantastic.
Stormatious - Great job on this scratch-built shack. If it didn't have the words "scratch build" prominently displayed, I would have assumed it was an official model by someone. The corrugated metal and the rusty patches on them look so good.
feltmonkey - I'm really pleased with how this came out. The red looks lovely in the flesh, although I'm not sure how it happened and I'm pretty sure I couldn't do it again. You can now see this model on the GW store page, oddly enough. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Knight-Gallant-2017
Dukeofbeer - This is great. A hilarious conversion, and such a strong vibrant orange. Great highlighting and fantastic details.
Maharg - Stunning job on the black armour, and the rider's face is excellent as well. Great work.
Modock - The blends on the blue, and the way you've done the hexagonal-patterned parts of the suits is amazing. You've painted loads of Infinity stuff and it's all incredible. Do you actually play? And if so, how long does it take your opponents to pick their jaws back up off the floor when you drop this stuff on the table?
Chris56 - Absolutely brilliant work. I love the humour in there, and from a painting point of view I really like the blue OSL, and the subtle weathering on the Gundam guy. That sliced-in-half tank is hilarious.
Peregrine - All about the weathering, and the weathering is soooo good. And there's sooooo much of it! A moody and magnificent piece, perfectly in keeping with the DKoK.
vejut - I seem to remember you were a bit down on this, but I actually really like it. You've picked out all the gold filigree, and the blue is a perfect contrast colour for it.
A bit of a stunning month all told. I'm in awe of people who have completed multiple tanks or produced huge pieces. I thought my own entry was a massive undertaking, but it's dwarfed by what some people have put out. There's quality as well as quantity too, and a lot of really amazing work. Well done everyone. I bet anyone wandering into this thread would be hugely impressed and hopefully inspired. It shows what can be done, and in a single month as well!

Thanks for the feedback feltmonkey - you're right, I was largely just trying to get my blackstar painted to fit in with the rest of the army. Using the challenge as an excuse to get it painted, rather than an excuse to go to town. Hopefully my next one will pop more.
Anyway, I'm away for work and on mobile, so I'm not even going to try to post my usual comments on each entry. I've put a few votes in, and will just say great work everybody. There's several excellent pieces in there this month, and the others will have to settle for being merely very good!

Thanks for the feedback Feltmonkey always love reading your monthly write up. The gloss black is actually the blue gem stone paint over leadbelcher/iron breaker. I use it as an easy way of painting glass and used the same technique on the nuka cola dispenser on the sentry bots base.

Wow, do we have a very crowded podium this month! 5 entries tied for the top three spots (and several more a mere handful of votes behind)! So without further ado, let's show off the awesome calibre of this month's winners.
Sharing third place, with 20 votes, queen_annes_revenge with this expertly composed Imperial Pilot
and Captain Brown's Sisters of Battle armour:
In second, a mere vote ahead, Chris56's Gundam diorama:
And sharing the top spot on 23 votes a piece, we have feltmonkey's imposing Imperial Knight:
And Peregrine's masterfully weathered Macharius:
Congratulations to everyone who took part, and thanks to all those who provided feedback and votes! See you next month (when, hopefully, I'll be a bit more punctual, Real Life having calmed down significantly! )

Congrats to the winners, well deserved, and to others. It was like a battle of the titans...some huge and incredible miniatures were done this month, very inspiring.
Feltmonkey - thank you for the feedback and yes I do play with them constantly, but I gotta say that I take good care of them...to think about it I haven't knocked over
an Infinity mini in a game.

Sorry for no comments from me this month, but RL kept me busy and Grandfather Nurgle decided to bless me earlier this week. Kinda disappointed but not really surprised at how few votes I got. My stuff usually is part of an ongoing army project and so doesn't stand out like other people's because I'm only aiming for tabletop standard. Others really push themselves and so are rewarded for it (usually; there are often multiple entries that don't get the votes they really deserve).

Hi All
Apologies for not getting any comments in this month, had to go abroad at short notice with work but back now. I did mange to get some votes in though
Thanks for the comment Felt, your very kind, not my best entry but I'm just happy I got one (mostly) finished and entered in time
I love that we have so many people on the podium this month, shows that a lot of the entries were worthy of a vote.
Congrats Queen Anne, Captain Brown, Chris56, Felt and Peregrine. I'll get the table updated shortly
