I don't know what is more impressive - the quantity, the quality or Paradigm's dedication to putting that all together .

Thanks for the save monkeytroll! (and fix Paradigm!)

As a silent poller (and non contestant) last year, I mostly limited myself to 3 - 5 votes, but I couldn't do less than 8 (almost 9...) this time around.

How does this usually go? "In no particular order"?. Well, in image listing order...
  • Maharg: Deathwatch Intercessor
  • Arakasi: Deathwing Terminator
  • Jamie Shred: Space Marine Heroes
  • Modock: Lord of Contagion
  • monkeytroll: Chaos Terminator
  • feltmonkey: Roboute Guilliman
  • DV8: Space Wolf Lieutenant
  • ms07b3: Iron Hands Invictors

  • I'll see if I can put together some thoughts and notes on each entry - but I doubt that will happen before the weekend.

    Congratulations and good luck all!

There are some absolutely killer entries in this list, but special shoutout to Tim121RVC and Pneumo for thier kickass shredded marines, I feel like these are almost the doomguy equivalent of CSM and Tau, and I love them both dearly.

Chris56 also crushed it with that conversion and paintjob - AND THE SPEED HE DID IT WITH?!?!?!????!?! excellent work.

Really great stuff. From everyone involved. I had great fun looking at all of this, and participating! Thanks to Paradigm for organizing everything, you're the coolest!

So, trying to give comments for everybody. Thats...kind of exhausting on this many entries, and my props to everybody who does it every month, I was getting worn out by 10 or 15, even though the entries are all quite good. Hopefully these come out more as helpful and constructive than jerky.

Nevelon: A very neatly done paint job. Always love some frag cannons, and some good work on the torch tip--both the metal discoloring, and getting that pilot flame.

Deadshot: I like the color layering on the hammer, and you got the small details pretty good. Kinda think you may need to blend the wash a bit more, the brown's a bit stark, but it does give good contrast.

Porphyrius: I love the color on the armor, overall a nice classic Slaanesh scheme. The gun in the detail pics looks a little plain, but the edge highlighting on the armor is nice and thats a very clean white on the sword.

MobileSuitRandom: A wonderfully chaotic entry. I wish I had the courage to try that kind of freehand. I especially like the implied skull shapes in the back cloak.

Rybrook: These guys look great in the gallery links where I can see them larger, but they're kinda small in thread view, possibly try cropping a little closer? (I know thats a bit hypocritcal from me.) They've got a nice gloss black going on their armor that the edge highlights help with and the shading is great too.

SmallChanges: A nice clean job on the colors and details. It looks like you went back over the wash on the cloak with some layers, and it really helps bring that cloak up. You may want to try a mid brown, red, or orange wash on the cloak next time, it'll still give you contrast but leave it looking less stark.

Maharg: The edge highlighting is definitely the focus of this model, and it really helps draw out the shapes and catch the eye. Not sure going all all the way to the near white on the bottom edges of the plates as well as the top worked out, but it still definitely "pops."

Arakasi: I like the bone armor on this guy, lots of contrast, and you obviously put a lot of work into that. I also kinda like the implication of the underfloor/tile layering on the base.

Viterbi: Cypher looks suitable mysterious here. I like the texture contrast between the smoother armor and gear and the rougher cloak. I also like the use of snow powder over a sceneic base, really sets the scene for him.

posermcbogus: Another great set of black painted armor, and very neatly done hazard stripes and heraldry. A lovely set of models!

Captain Brown: the modeling job is a bit abrupt, but its still a great concept, and just generally well painted. The rock came out especially rocklike (though that may just be because its an actual rock!), and the armor has some nice subtle shading to it.

Domican: Some nice accessory work on the outside with the skull and lightning bolts, just kinda wish you'd put them on more than just the lonesome one per side (or possibly just filled the side more?). The fact that it's got a working rear gate and some very nice interior detail work is great!

Jamie Shred: A nice sampler pack of different chapters. All very distinct and smoothly painted, with good motion to them, and the bases and paint style help tie them all together really well.

ShadowsAndDust: Solid work. I like the lighting bolt accents, and the gold helps break things up nicely. They could probably use a little more contrast in the panels themselves, but still great.

Zergsmasher: Asmodai looks solid, I like the way the weapon handle came out. Afraid some of the plates kinda blend a bit, but he's still a good looking entry.

Modock: Its just a really good work. I got nothing.

Vejut: Needs more highlighting on the darks, more contrast on the fur, do try to cover up the paint knocks, and really, do more with the details in general. Even more a mess than normal, really. And try to actually line up your crops next time.

Pariah Press: I like the bits of character with the severed heads and cloaks (also the traditional name on the base). Likewise, that freehand numbering came out very good! It looks like there's some edge highlighting going on on the upper, possibly expand that and try a bit more (color or brightness) contrast?

hotshot: Always fun to see nonstandard takes on the month's theme. The color scheme is a nice mix of contrast without being an eye riot. The white's a little rough, admittedly normal for white. Possibly try a 2nd coat, or middle to light grey before the white? The metal has come out very nice, but the feet are getting a little lost in the plain black base. Still a cool set of marines.

monkeytroll: Nurgle-ishly adorable with the tiny head. A great conversion, and it painted up pretty solidly as well.

DJJazzyJeff: I like the lightning bolts on the power weapon, and the storytelling of the splatter from the base. Good job.

feltmonkey: The only thing I've even remotely got is the inside of the wings behind his head look kinda plain, but that may have been to frame his head more, and its only even noticable because of how much care and work has been done to the rest of the model. Again, just a really great model.

Midget Gems Jr.: Good use of mud to tie them to their bases, and nice even colors. A really good start to hopefully a long time in the hobby.

Midget Gems: I like the way the shoulder skulls and the pack vents came out, and the robes work well as well.

CREEEEEEED: The metals came out really well here. I also don't think I've seen the hazard stripe face guard before, it works, though now my brain is trying to read it as anime tears...

JustALittleOrkish: The highlights came out good, and overall looks nice. The yellow is nicely shaded, though possibly a bit too sharp a contrast for the blue? The tabard could also use a bit more detail work, the big yellow space attracts the eye and it might be worth trying to do something with the sun shape there to use that. Alltogether nice work pulling together the widely differing paint needs of codex style deathwatch, libriarian, and Imperial Fists!

MacPhail: Effective painting of a basic scheme, and with white that's not a given! Good solid work on the white armor, you can see the panel lines, and the red sets the white off nicely. Would kinda like to see them closer, honestly.

Arkanid: Nice color pairing, the logo and the weapon sets off the slight purple of the body nicely. A nice job.

DV8: I love the purple metal effect on the axe, and the clear but not overwhelming light source indications, but the whole thing is just good looking all over.

Bschwi1: The colors are nicely blocked and even. Would kinda like to see some highlighting on the gun, the black parts all kinda run together, and possibly some use of the divots and frills on the green sections to have some details, but still came out well.

Tim121RVC: A nice execution of the whole "ghost model" idea. The red in the eyes helps break all the green up nicely.

ms07b3: Really like the OSL effect on the first one, and they're both nicely painted all over.

Disciple of Mephiston: The reloading pose is great. Solid paintjob in general too.

Pneumo: Wonderful techno barbarian look. Not something I would have thought of, but it works really well. Would look a bit better with a base, and a bit more highlighting on the helmet, but still just a nice conversion.

Paradigm: I like the frozen moment in time effect, and also the duelling mutton chops on the two participants. Otherwise, just your usually good level of painting.

Chris56: Another in the "wouldn't have thought of that, but works pretty well" camp. The skin is nicely otherworldly.

(can you tell I was kinda running out of words towards the end? sorry to those of your down there...)

Thanks Vejut, you must have gone mad compiling that feedback

Because of the mass of entries, I veered from my usual "vote for 5" rule and voted for 8 entries. And even that was hard, because there are so many nice entries.

MobileSuitRandom: I just love all those colors on him, especially compared to his official paintjob. It's nice seeing a sorcerer who seems to have fun at his job

Maharg: As I already wrote in your thread, love the bright edge highlights and the freehand you have done for the chapter symbol.

Arakasi: You took a lot of effort with this bonecolored armour and it shows, great job!

Jamie Shred: I love all the different chapter colors and my favorite is the IF. He almost looks like something out of a comic.

Modock: Interesting to see a non-Infinity model and you did amazing work, all the subtle glows on the model combined with the base are extraordinary.

monkeytroll: I just love the (at least to my eyes) flying rodent gak crazy color choices, but they work perfectly and make this model something out of nightmares.

feltmonkey: Having done a lazy version of RBG I nonetheless now how much detail there is to paint and you didn't shy away from any of it. Great job on the face!

DV8: The dynamic pose and the subtle conversion (he normally has the axe and a gun, if I'm not mistaken) combined with your clean brushwork make for a very lovely model.

There are so many good entries this month. Good job everyone!

And some feedback to a few, who really caught my attention:

Midget Gems Jr. - I love your marines. They are unique, and they make me happy. I hope to see more models from you in the future!

Tim121RVC - Your ghost-marine is stunning! I don't think I have seen anything like it, just wow.

Chris56 - I love your idea of making a Genestealer Marine. It looks so cool!

And thank you for the feedback Vejut!

Mine is a protest model as I own no Marines...other than the parts of one from a Rhino kit...that made one dead Marine. While I know at least one other regular declined to submit an entry for the month because it was Space Marines, I did not want to have a black box on Midget Gems tracker. Some beautiful work form everyone with Marine figures.

Blimey, there's a lot of entries to post comments for this month. This is going to take a while. Apologies if the comments are a bit short this month! I've basically got an hour to do them in, and a normal number of entries usually takes about that.

Nevelon - As ever, a nice solid job. Good work on all the details like the wrist screens and ammo pouches.

Deadshot - A good, impressive and imposing model. The face is great, and the gold tones look really good.

Porphyrius - Good smooth purple armour, neat painting, and they look good as a squad.

MobileSuitRandom - Really nice. I like the effect from the blue highlighted with red. The skull on his staff looks great, and I really like the pattern on his cloak.

Rybrook - I had to click the pictures to be able to see them properly, but good solid tabletop work. I like the weathering on the lower legs, it looks like they're getting covered in the sandy/chalky material from the bases.

SmallChanges - Good solid colours. I like that you made him black - you don't see that enough in Warhammer.

Maharg - Great edge highlights, and the freehand symbol is very impressive.

Arakasi - That bone-coloured Deathwing armour is not easy to paint. You've done a really good job of it.

Viterbi - Cypher is one of my favorite 40K characters. I have the new model, I'll get round to painting him one day! I like the worn look on the cloak.

posermcbogus - Very neat, very clean. Great work.

Captain Brown - "Space Marine" doesn't have to mean Adeptus Astartes, any kind of sci-fi soldier can count as a space marine, really. It was a funny idea to use what you had as half a dead marine though.

Domican - Nice and clean, and the lightning is great.

Jamie Shred - Lovely work. I think you even painted the eyes on the Space Wolf! It has to be appreciated that it's actually a lot more work to paint five marines of differing chapters than a squad of five who are all the same colour. They look great, as well.

ShadowsAndDust - Really dramatic, fearsome-looking Night Lords. The one in the centre in particular is a really cool model.

Zergsmasher - Yay, Dark Angels! Ignore everyone else booing, Zerg. they just don't understand our ways. Nice job on the mini, who looks pretty tricky to paint.

Modock - Really nice. An eyecatching base, and super use of colours, with the green and rusty tones repeated throughout the mini. The subtle green light tinting the bone armour is great. Also, the guts look disturbingly realistic.

vejut - Nice and neat, good details. The fur looks good.

Pariah Press - Again, nice neat painting and good details. I like that you've named them all.

hotshot - Good solid painting. I like the faces on the first couple of minis.

monkeytroll - Some nice touches here. I like the battle damage, his weird tiny head, and whatever that is popping out of the pool on his base.

DJJazzyJeff - You need to get your paint a bit thinner, and maybe use a wash or something to get some more definition, but good work on all the details. The sword looks great.

feltmonkey - It can be strange when you post pics of something you've painted what other people see when they look at it. I only look at the blue armour, and to a lesser extent the gold trim, as that's what I spent the most time getting right. The face was a couple of hours, the sword about an hour. The blue armour, easily twenty times that. I wanted to get a specific level of shine, so it looked like polished ceramite, not the ultra-shiny metallic blue I sometimes see, which to me looks like a Red Bull can. Still, I'm pleased with the end result, and a bit sad that I might be forced to sell it if I lose my job in the current world situation! Fingers crossed it doesn't come to that.

Midget Gems Jr. - Awesome. How old is MG Jr? I love the mud on the boots - it ties them into the bases and makes them look like they've been through a lot of fighting.

Midget Gems - Also great. I love the colours, even if they are a bit West Ham.

CREEEEEEED - Very nice. Really clean painting, and a nice grimey Blanchitsu feel.

JustALittleOrkish - By contrast, super bright and colourful. We've got bright blues, yellows, red and green, so obviously the base has to be bright purple as well. Excellent block highlights.

MacPhail - A nice solid-looking squad. I think I remember in the thread you were pleased to have got them finished. These challenges are great for that. They look good as well.

Arkanid - Cool colours, and an atmospheric model. I really like your freehand chapter symbol.

DV8 - Really nice, as always. Your painterly style is unusual to see on a GW Space Marine. It looks fantastic.

    Bschwi1 - A solid, clean paintjob. It's possibly a bit lost between DV8 and Tim121RVC's entries!

Tim121RVC - The mad offspring of a Chaos Marine and Slimer from Ghostbusters. There's something really strange in the neighbourhood. It's a great idea. I like the skulls in the swirly thing and the red eyes. If I was to be nitpicky, one of the slime tendrils hands sort of sideways a bit rather than down, and the sections of ground look a bit odd, like they wouldn't have fitted together before he burst out of them. This is really minor stuff though, it's a great idea well-executed.

ms07b3 - Fantastic work, particularly the posing of the two dreadnoughts. Great painting too, and nice OSL.

Disciple of Mephiston - Nice clean tabletop work. God, that flock gets everywhere, doesn't it?

Pneumo - Nice job on the skin. It looks a bit unfinished, especially without a base. Did you run out of time? Still, the painting is neat, solid work.

Paradigm - I like the narrative here. The genestealer on the base isn't just window dressing - it tells a part of the story. The marine hasn't noticed him, and is about to have quite a bad day.

Chris56 - A mad idea, but great execution. It can't have been easy to make those bits fit together. Your glow effects are on-point as always, and I like the bit of freehand on the face.

Great job everybody! A really nice collection of miniatures. I got the comments done in a mere 55 minutes, too. That's five minutes to put towards trying to paint 23 miniatures for next month...

Haha yeah, that's such an easy trap to fall into. I regularly do so myself, but then I never learn from my mistakes. You forget that you can't batch paint, you have to pick or mix different highlight tones for each mini, and all the lessons you learn from doing one can't be applied to the rest of the squad. I'm genuinely impressed you finished them all off, and to such a good standard.

    Hi All

Apologies for not being on much at the moment, the UK lockdown has thrown me out of routine and between looking after kids and working from home there hasn't been much time for anything else, I did mange to get my votes in but not any comments this time. Will update the league table this week.

A nice strong round to start the years challenges off well done everyone

Congrats DV8, Felt and Modock wonderful entries and beautiful use of colours/tone changes

Also a big thank you to those that kindly voted for my Daughters enter (she is 4) already doubled my vote total with her first entry very proud of her She will be entering again in the future when the lockdown has lifted I'll be taking her to the local shop to pick something she likes for her next entry.

Now this was a really close call...it's great when entries are so even it could easily turn differently. Congrats to Feltmonkey and DV8, well deserved and great job everyone.

Thanks dakkadakka and see you next time.
