For last month's challenge, the theme was Legendary, calling on entrants to assemble a collection of characters both canon and custom, the heroes and villains, major figures that shape the history of their respective worlds. There was a great standard of work across the board this time, and now it's time to pick the winners.

As usual, please cast as many votes as you like for the entries you think deserve recognition, whether that's for the skill on show, the effort involved, the choice of model or anything else that catches your eye. Elbows, your entry seems to have been eaten by photobucket.

Voted.
Thought I was doing so well, keeping it to just a short list. Looked back and I'd ticked about two thirds of the entries...

Few special mentions:
tIttlemanscrest: Fire Wizard - Absolutely love the basing, fantastic job!

Paradigm: Legends of the Space Wolves - Your style and colours work perfectly for the Space Wolves, these look grim as hell and the blood is scary

Modock: Iguana TAG - Blown away. Perfect blending, awesome colours.

TheGrimDork: Phoenix Lord Fugean - Love the lary orange and the shading is beautiful.

Bottle: Cannoness Veridyan - Jealous! Wish I could paint blacks that well. She looks ace

Voted for quite a few more but just thought I'd sling a few mentions out there

In a Trayzn pokeball

I voted for a few, here they are, plus bottle who I didn't quite vote for.

Zobo : I'm a sucker for a nice looking dread
NathanD298 : I like the extra pauldron detail, the base detail and overall paintjob
Bottle : first time I didn't vote for you, the painting was good I just really don't like the sculpt, not your fault
Midgetgems : Love the cloak and the overall Napoleonic feel you gave the model.
Feltmonkey : some pretty stunning work on the nazghul and ringwraith, only downside was the weapons on the base.
Modock : superb blending
tIttlemanscrest : I saw this on the front page a while ago and without knowing it was for this competition, I thought it was a golden demon entry
Paradigm : the usual high quality grimdark painting you bring to the table
KustomerD : I like the conversion work and the paintjob
Chris56 : well done on producing such a nice looking model out of finecast
TheGrimDork : In a similar vein to Modock, some superb blending and great model all around.

Now hopefully I've brownnosed enough to receive more than 2 votes this time.

A Protoss colony world

This is a pretty spectacular month for some truly legendary entries. Keeping it down to 5 votes was tough! Here's who got my 5 votes:
Jadenim: A very well executed Space Marine. Very clean paintjob on a very interesting mini.
ZoBo: What can I say? You've done it again! I love Dreadnoughts, and this one is no exception!
feltmonkey: I love pretty much anything to do with LotR, and you really made that Nazgul look like it just flew off the movie screen! Kudos on making a model that's mostly the same color look interesting.
Modock: I'm not entirely sure what range that model comes from, but that highlighting and blending looks really amazing! I wouldn't even attempt something like that, let alone be able to pull it off so well.
tittlemanscrest: I love that Wizard! The use of color was really well executed, and that orb in his hand is probably the best thing on the model!

As I said, all the entries were great. I certainly had fun painting mine, even if it was just a bit beyond my skill level. That's what is so great about this painting comp, it encourages us to push our skills that much further! Shout out as always to Paradigm for taking time to run these challenges!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):

Thanks ZergSmasher!

I voted for a few entires, but I had an absolute three-way tie for my top; tIttlemanscrest, feltmonkey and Modock.

tIttlemanscrest because it just looks like a piece of classic fantasy artwork come to life, Modock because of the insane shading and feltmonkey for some how finding and stasis locking a real, tiny Nazgul and fell beast, because no one can paint something to look that realistic!

Excellent work as always. A few things worth mentioning. First, it takes a good deal of courage for someone to share what they have created in a public setting. So for everyone who submitted an entry, you have my respect. Also, I have definitely seen a marked improvement in painters who have been submitting entries to mr.paradigm's contests. Keep up the good work.

In terms of my votes this month, modock did a fantastic job on that infinity model. Great blending!
Bottle, as usual your work is crisp and clean. Chris, that skaven is fantastic, I don't even like skaven but you did a fabulous job on it. I'm sorry if i forgot your handle, but the nazgul also received a vote. It is a very good rendering, and it makes me realize how much I I miss lord of the rings stuff, it is truly my favorite universe.

Just a note to everyone, veterans and new, if you took the time to put out your best work and made a piece you are proud of, you should consider yourself a winner. Ultimately, any creative competition is a competition with yourself, and if you try your best, that in and of itself is a win.

Finally thank you all for your kind words about my humble piece. I am honored that you took the time to take a glance at it.

Happy painting!

I didn't vote too much this month. I generally don't love hero/character models. I voted for Feltmonkey and Grimdork for some excellent work.

My Fuegan was dead due to Photobucket, but with Grimdork's there was not much reason to have another one in there!

Absolutely blown away by the level of quality this month! My top 5 were (in no order)

feltmonkey
Modock
Chris56
Tittlemanscrest
TheGrimDork

Favourite of the month goes to Tittlemanscrest. I want to copy that conversion and add it to my own Order army so bad.

Close second was Chris56 who I think is being surprisingly overlooked by the voters.

A special mention lastly to Emberlordoffire08 for vast and noticeable improvement - it looks so good, your painting skills are really really coming along fast.

Since I've been away and not around to comment on peoples entries in the thread I thought I do a full comment list here

Thank you Para for running the competition again.

Thanks a lot for any votes for Gaunt. That's 2 Tanith models in 2 years, soon I will have an army.............

Nevelon - A very cool model, the spooky blue is done well and there's some good shading on the metal + skin.
Jadenim - The scrolls have come out really well and the model is in a very active position.
ZoBo - Really great detail, flames are brilliant and the green has a nice tone to it.
Whittlesey40k - You always put the effort to do the tiny little details like the screen on the scanner which I really like.
ChaoticMind - Giant guy in a Top Hat, what's not to like? You have kept the colour and highlights constant over a large area which can be difficult to do.
ZergSmasher - Fair play for painting such an impressive model. The painting is very neat and the flames look good.
Drummernathan - The bird is the real star of that model The fur and the feathers are done well, A brave colour to chose, I feel like the armour needs some more shading and highlights to make it seem less a block of turquoise
Verviedi - A clean paint job, the red on the cape does look good.
NathanD298 - Congrats on gets such a big model done to a very good standard. I like that you have taken the time to do some small details like chipping and battle damage on the top. The Gem/lens also looks very good.
Bottle - Your painting is always exceptional. I think I will have to study some of your photos on the faces/skin on your models, (wasn't happy with how mine came out)
ApaceKittens - You have put some though in to parts of the model, there is some shading on the loin cloth and writing on the seals, keep up the good work.
Midget Gems - Black was ok, some different between the black gun and the black cloth, the cloak is better than my previous attempt. Face and skin needs to be improved and the eyes ooh god the eyes.....
Vejut - The skin has a good depth to it. I wouldn't want to fight against that guy.
Feltmonkey - Your effort to blend the wings have given them really nice detail and colour. Its a big model to go into such detail on.
Modock - Fantast blending on the armour, your colour transitions really keep getting better. Great work.
EmberlordofFire8 - Blue hands and glowing eyes make the model quite interesting, well done on the fluff as well
Possumcraft - I like the blue for the gaps in the armour and the purple hair came out really well.
tIttlemanscrest - What to say, brilliant colours and an amazing base.
Paradigm - Nice work on getting 2 models done (although for you that's only an extra days work :p ), Good work all round.
Elbows - Shame your pics aren't there :(
Kustomer D - A suitably epic Ork with some very nice custom bits. Trying to work out what's on the tabard.
CREEEEEED - I do like the blood chain axe, the photos are quite small so hard to see much of what you have done.
Chris56 - The paint job on this looks really smooth and some great colour but its really hard to see. Would love to see bigger or more zoomed in photos.
n1ceguypaul - Nice backstory, good work on the weathering and battle damage.
GulGog TufToof - Your entries always make me smile, He has got a lot of character.
Gundor2 - Good highlights on the black and shading on the cape. I like the model as well
keezus - A good looking model for a last minute entry. Cloth looks very good.
TheGrimDork - That elder is great, it feels like I looking at an old White dwarf edition
Ustrello - Theres a lot of gold but its not overwhelming and you have managed to add bits of other colour in to draw the eye. Very good models.

Thank you midget gems, the bird and fur were the simplist parts of these paint job but turned out awesome! Zandri dust basecoat, old school flesh wash, then wetbrushed with screaming scull and dry brushed with pallid wych flesh!
I definitely agree on the shading and I may go back and do some fine recess shading of drakenhoff nightshade, though nuln oil may suit this particular situation better. The pictures don't show it too well but it is actually lightly blended layering up 3 different shades of teal. Would you recommend going back with nuln oil or drakenhoff nightshade on that? Or I could even do a 50/50 mix of old school green ink and drakenhoff to try and get a teal shade/ink.

Thanks for the kind comments and thanks as always to Para for all his work.

Loved a lot this month, in almost no particular order -
Nathand298 - cool knight and such a large model;
Bottle - awesome NMM, especially that sword;
Modock - FANTASTIC blending and is gonna look great with the Nomads you painted the other month;
Nevelon - love the Mannfred (almost chose Vlad myself) the glowing skulls look very cool;
Feltmonkey - photorealistic job, man...well bloody done;
TheGrimDork - crisp and clean Fuegan...great work....

but the standout was Tittlemanscrest - great diorama and awesome blending on those robes.

See everyone in Fun 'n Games!

This month has the best quality entries since I started. I'm hugely impressed by some pieces.

Deeply grateful for all the comments and votes on my Iguana. Thank you guys.
Whittlesey40k say thanks to your wife for me.
Great effort Midget Gems for writing comments on all the entries.

Let's get down to business:

- Nevelon: Impressive piece from you. The bright blue works great for the skulls and spirits. It creates a visually pleasant contrast.
I like it.
- ZoBo: Clean and precise paint job. Nice touch with the flames and the green tone is well done.
- NathanD298: Color me impressed. You finished such a huge model in such a short time and you did it great. Nice color scheme
with plenty of little details.
- Bottle: Extreme precision Bottle, wonderful also the gold parts are pretty amazing.
- Midget Gems: I like it what you did with the jacket especially on the front and great work with the freehand camo on the cape.
- Feltmonkey: Working with just different shades of black and grey is not an easy task. You did it really well but I think you could push
the contrast a bit further. I'm quite sure Nazgul looks more vivid live than in the pictures.
- tIttlemanscrest: Well deserved lead in this competiton. Lot's of details which are amazingly done. Like the wood, blade, orbs, the
wizard's cloak and so on. Bravo!
- Chris56: Another great entry from you. Smooth blends on the knifes and the cloak. Even though you used a limited color selection
it looks really good. Congrats!
- TheGrimDork: Really, really good! From blends to precision painting. That scheme, my kind of colors ! I love the axe.

Well that's it for now. See ya.

Thanks for all the kind comments, and the votes for that matter too!

Some really fantastic work this month - top of the list for me was definitely tIttlemanscrest! Absolutely flawless work!

Would be far too long to list everyone I voted for this month, but I look forward to seeing everyone's entries for July.

I always try to keep this up to date with what projects I'm working on... but they just keep piling up

Thanks to everyone who has voted for me. Thanks especially for the comments from Whittlesy, Creeeed, Zerg, Jadenim, Tittlemanscrest, Elbows, Bottle, Midget, Chris, and Modock for the comments. I was trying to closely reproduct the colours and feel of the Fell Beast from the movies and paintings I found online, so the comments saying I managed to do some approximation of that are very gratifying. Also, Creeeed - you're absolutely right about the weapons on the base. They're a bit weak, aren't they? I think I made a mistake making them too light, and the painting on them is pretty lazy.

I commented on everyone last month, and I quite enjoyed going through giving everyone who entered feedback, so I'm going to do that again if that's okay. I'm not trying to set myself up as the arbiter of what constitutes good painting, I just think it's always good to have some sort of comment for your work, and as everyone has taken the time to build, paint, photograph and post their miniatures, it's nice to take the time to comment. Plus, I like doing it, so it's self-indulgent really. And no-one knows who I voted for so you can't hold it against me.

Nevelon - That is a really cool miniature, and I like how you've given it a colourful paintjob. The blue looks stunning. I would have done it all black, grey and brown (see my entry for proof) and I think your approach is better. I bet it will be really eyecatching on the table, too.

Jadenim - Again, another mini that's going to look great on the table. Great colours, and the scrolls are excellent.

ZoBo - Is that freehand on the shoulders? It looks fantastic. Nice details, and bold colours.

Whittlesy40K - Interesting conversion and a good tabletop paint job. The stance has come out a bit weird, as if he's preparing to teabag that rock, but you've done a good job on his face.

ChaoticMind - A nice paintjob on a cool mini. Again, good job on the face, and I like the choice of skin colour. The leather on his ripped jacket looks good too.

ZergSmasher - An ambitious miniature to pull off in a month! Great job on the flames and the details on the base. The one thing I think you need to do is give a second coat to some of the gold areas where you've got some blue on them, then gone over with the gold, but the blue is showing through.

Drummernathan - Very nice paintjob. I think you're improving month on month. As Midget said, the feathers on the bird and the fur on the cloak are standouts, as you've got a lot of contrast on them. I think your idea of adding a bit more shade to the teal is a good one, although I like the colour. The detail on the face is very good.

Vervidi - Another great tabletop standard Marine. Good, neat edge highlighting. One way to really push it to the next stage is to think about where bright spots of light would reflect off the armour and add them to the edge highlighted areas. I think you have a steady enough hand to pull it off. Look at how Bottle does this - he's a master of it. Good job regardless.

NathanD298 - Again, ambitious to paint a Knight in a month! I love the muted paint scheme, and the subtle touches of shading and weathering work well.

Bottle - Great work as usual. The way you paint black is really clever, and I like your NMM on this mini. The sword is particularly great. The skullboobs are a very odd, but typically GW touch.

Apacekittens - That sword is a simple idea that looks really cool. I like how he's standing on a Tau drone, too.

Midget - I prefer your take on him to the official model, who looks like he's tip-toeing into battle or about to fall flat on his face. The bricks on the base are great, and the fancy gold decoration on the front of his tunic is nicely done. Also, the camo cloak is really excellent.

Vejut - Great bold colours, and some nice shading and highlightling on the skin. Keep it up, work on neatness and contrast - I think you deserve more votes this month, to be honest.

feltmonkey - Rubbish base, boring colours. I'm pleased with how this turned out, especially as I was painting it for my wife's birthday. She's the biggest LOTR fan ever. She's even read all the history of Middle Earth books. More than once, I think.

Modock - Just wow. The colours! The blends! The shiney metallic highlights! That is some seriously excellent work, and I'm quite pleased that my vote for it actually put you ahead of me! It looks like you're going to come in second again, thanks to Tittlemanscrest, but your stuff is consistently great, and I think you deserve a win sooner or later.

EmberlordofFire8 - Your best work, I think. There's just a lot to like about it. The red tone is great, The gold looks really cool, The blue glow on the hands, and replicated in the eyes really adds interest and narrative to the model. Are those transfers on the shoulders? They're nicely applied if so. Could you come over from Switzerland and apply some to all of my Dark angels by any chance?

Possumcraft - A fun, cool miniature. I like how you've used those vivid blues and purples again. I think the whites may have got a bit bleached out in the photos, unfortunately.

Tittlemanscrest - Amazing. I keep seeing more and more little details in the base, such as the beautiful NMM on the spear and the helmetted skull of the dead soldier. The way you fade up the red towards the top of the wizard himself expertly draws the eye to where the focus should be - his grimly determined face. The repeated use of the black-green gems and glass is very clever, the runes on the scrolls are impossibly neat. The whole composition is fantastic. It looks like you're going to score a victory which is richly deserved.

Paradigm - Classic Para. I see elements of dark, and a lot of grim. Grimdark, if you will. I just made that up. You make the 40K universe look like somewhere I wouldn't want to visit even for a second. Great work.

Elbows - I don't think I saw it before the pictures vanished. :(

Kustomer D - I love it. Such a characterful model. I gave you a vote because when I noticed he had a treasure map for a loincloth I think I laughed for a full minute.

CREEEEEEED - A very neat, detailed paintjob. The pics are a bit small, which makes it difficult to make out some of the detail work you've done. It looks great though. I like the smoke particularly.

Chris56 - Really nice. The muted, limited colour palatte adds a lot of atmosphere to the piece. The NMM on the daggers is excellent, and the way you've pushed the contrast on the flowing cloak really adds drama and interest to the model.

niceguypaul - A menacing silhouette on mobiles unfortunately, which might be costing you votes, but on my moniter screen it looks really good. I like your muted take on Salamander green, the backstory, and your bases are always excellent. The cloak is very nice too, with the muddy weathering.

GulGog TufToof - Great skintones, really nice shading and highlighting on that part of the miniature in particular. Those are the bluest of blue trousers, too. Homer Simpson blue pants blue.

Gundor2 - Cypher is the best character in 40K, isn't he? You have done a great job with him. Nice subtle highlighting on the black, and the face looks good too.

Keezus - You painted him in what, half an hour didn't you? Wow, nice job. Good muted colours and pale skin.

TheGrimDork - As others have said, it's like something from Eavy Metal in 1989. Amazing work. I love everything about it.

Ustrello - Nice work on some fiddly, super-detailed minis. The cherry-red shoulderpads came out particularly well.

Ha, thanks! Applying transfers is really easy if you know how. The trick is to paint the surface with a coat of Lahmian medium before you apply them, and then paint several coats of medium over it again after it dries. A drybrush of light brown or grey afterwards makes them a little more subtle, and gives them a nice weathered look.

Firstly, thanks for all of the kind words, really appreciate em. It's been great getting involved and I really hope I can enter this month as well (still thinking at the moment and what fills the brief).

Ok, finally getting round to comments, voted as soon as the thread went up, but haven't had a minute to elaborate further;

tittlemancrest - Your work is excellent, really captures the feel of a wandering wizard. Your healthy lead in the votes is fully deserved.

Modock - Beautiful blending and colour choice.

Chris56 - Love the swords on your Snikt. The placement of highlights/shade is very well done as is the blending.
Nice base too.

Ustrello - Great continuity through the squad, nice attention to the all the detail.

feltmonkey - Not easy to get such life and feeling using mainly greys, top work.

Elbows - Sorry, I feel a bit bad. You should definitely re-post some pics for everyone to see. Yours was a great take on Feugan, less traditional colour scheme but it worked, seems a shame for it not to be in the final list.

Sorry can't comment on everyone's (time to go to work), but nice work all round. I'm looking forward to this month's entries.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Modock - Just wow. The colours! The blends! The shiney metallic highlights! That is some seriously excellent work, and I'm quite pleased that my vote for it actually
put you ahead of me! It looks like you're going to come in second again, thanks to Tittlemanscrest, but your stuff is consistently great, and I think you
deserve a win sooner or later.

Praises to you mate for taking huge amount of time for writing all those comments!

You're one seriously cool dude. I admire your fairness, but it looks like you're gonna beat me, again...damn who gave you the last vote?!? Joking aside The Nazgul is STUNNING!
Well deserved every vote. And thanks for the inspiring comment on my Iguana.

This competition is really great fun. Not only it motivates me to paint I'm also having a blast.

The layers sound good just a same they didn't show up in the photo :(

I'm definitely not the best person to give painting advice. If I was doing it I would use a very thin brush to apply a wash (either Nulu or Drakenhoff, or whatever mix you want as long as it make it darker) directly into the recesses so you leave the base colour on the majority of the armour surface (saves having to reapply it after a wash). Due to its already quite light colour to highlight it I would have done something like a 50/50 mix of teal and Ulthuan gray (or a White) around the edges of all the plates, then a final very thin edge highlight of 20/80 Teal/White in places more exposed to light e.g the upper edges and corners.

Pretty much exactly like this link but with Teal instead of Blue - only 2 mins long so worth a watch.

Great work for commenting on everyone Felkmonkey, TY

Thanks for the comments Madock and Felt The camo I tried to replicate was tiger stripe just because I liked the look of it. Yeah I'm not a big fan of the GW models for the Tanith unfortunately.

I think you would get even more votes if you make the pic bigger If you are combining photos into 1 picture try for something around 1280×800 that way people can see your work.

Whittlesy40K - Interesting conversion and a good tabletop paint job. The stance has come out a bit weird, as if he's preparing to teabag that rock, but you've done a good job on his face.

Yep, teabagging of the rock is exactly what I was going for - so nailed it

It is a pretty odd conversion (it's the Necron legs that give him the odd stance) and it's definitely not one of my best paint jobs, but I still like him despite that He'll be coming along with me to Warhammer World for a game next month

Thanks for the comments. I think the 3 votes so far is probably about right, but nice to get some comments on him too.

Votes this month to:

Nevelon, Ember, Midget Gems and Zergsmasher: Great entries that all show a great step up this month! Not knocking your previous entries by any stretch, but these 4 really look like you've pulled out all the stops and really pushed yourselves.

Feltmonkey, Modock, Chris56, Tittlemanscrest: 4 entries showing masterful use of their respective styles. The wonderfully realistic Fell Beast evokes the films perfectly, the TAG's clean blends, the almost monochrome Skaven, the colourful wizard all totally embodying their settings and histories.

TheGrimDork: Brilliantly old school scheme superbly executed.

Kustomer D: Great conversion work!

Winners!

In third place, Mockck's super-slick Iguana TAG

In second, just a single vote ahead, Feltmonkey's fearsome Nazgul:

And way out ahead, Tittlemanscrest's Red Wizard, evoking its high fantasy themes wonderfully:

Congratulations to you three and to everyone else who took part in the challenge this month, the overall standard was exceptional this time round! I'm also pleased to announce that Midget Gems has kindly volunteered to handle the League side of things for this year's rotation, so keep an eye out for a new League Table and Hall of Fame thread coming over the weekend.
