Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 30 August 2017: Brutal!
Welcome all to the 30th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka. For anyone who's unfamiliar with the format, this is a simple community challenge open to anyone on Dakka, the aim of the game being to paint a model or set of models relating to the month's theme and win points for doing so!
This month, the theme is 'Brutal'. As always this can be interpreted however you like, but in general any sort of close-up fighter with a particularly single-minded approach to combat, a notably gnarly weapon or who favours brute strength and rage over finesse and grace.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of August and will end at midnight BST on the 31st of August. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I think I’ll try to get some of these guys done:
Ultramarine 30k Destroyers. Goal will be a stick of 5, we’ll see how the month goes. I’ll sift through the squad to grab the meanest looking ones to paint first.
This is a first for me; my entry is currently still on the sprue: Brutal enough for you?
They will ultimately be used as Khorne Berzerkers in my Chaos Space Marines/World Eaters army.

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.

I'm on my holiday for the next 2 weeks so I'm unsure I'll finish this as its a big project that I don't want to rush. But the optimist ion me hopes I can. Depending on how quickly my converting goes I may end up adding a different entry.
Gargantuan Sqiggoth:
I've started some conversion work already, but several cuts in my fingers as I've been chipping the plasticard have slowed me down a bit! I've put an ork mekboy on it to show the scale of this beast! =)
Any hints/tips/ideas would be great. (i.e. how the heck do the orks actually get on board!)

Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts
well I've had a look through all my stuffs... couldn't really find something at first that seemed to fit the theme really as well as I'd like. Then I remembered I had these!
Heh, thanks. I'll try to get it done. I'm off on holiday this afternoon for 2 weeks so I got a bit more work done last night and ended up gouging my thumb a little. So far blood and sweat has gone in to it, I've got an ingenious idea for thinning down my paints. I must remember to buy some onions...

this goes without saying!

Do they come in layers...? Sounds good though... multiple thin layers of course!
Guildenstern wrote:
ladders
surely that's too mundane for orks.. it should be some form of teleporta system... Or a loading catapult or lobba or ... trebuchet... hmmm
Guildenstern wrote:
ropes
I bought some picture hanging wire that I think may make good rope... I'll try this out
Guildenstern wrote:

a rocket
since my tank bustas are going to be often on board I think I need some spare ammo lying about! A huge rocket could be fun though. Though for WSIWYG I need big shootas, I only have 2 in my bit box.. I'll see if I can get some from ebay though (whilst sunning myself on a beach in Sicily, recovering from my finger/thumb wounds =)).

All of the above?!
I understand... none of the above are at all optional...
By the way... Gunny pigs.... where can I get some????
Good luck everyone

Would some Poxwalkers be brutal enough? I'm fairly sure they are brutish and carry an assortment of bludgeoning weapons so I'm hoping they are near enough.
Anyway here is the sprue ready for my hamfisted ministrations...
I'm going to enjoy painting these!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Since I'm already painting at least one up for the Fate of Konor campaign, I think I'll do a Lord of Contagion this month. That or I will try and Squeeze my Vulkan He'Stan model that will be painted in Sons of Malice colors to command my "Lizards of Malice" primaris/space marines army which will all be getting paint after I finish this Dark Imperium Death Guard stuff for the campaign and finish up these two "test minis" for the Sons of Malice. Painting checkerboard armor with black and white is way harder than expected, even after already doing it twice beforehand. Oh well. Will post proof pics tomorrow after work once I decide who I'm going to enter this month.

Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Haha, thanks! I am on a tournament deadline now so painted every night and painted all weekend! It's gonna be a busy few weeks for me - got 23 Order models to do too.
Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)
