Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 9: There Can Be Only One! WINNERS ANNOUNCED
|
 |
Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
Time for another round of voting, on what in my opinion is possibly the best round of this challenge so far! The quality and the quantity of entries this time around istruly inspiring, so before going any further, a huge congratulations to everyone who took part! But as everyone who's seen the film that inspired the song that inspired this challenge knows, there can be only one! So it's time to vote for your favourites!
Simply pick the entries you like most, be that for the suitability to the theme Princes of the Universe, the quality of the painting, the effort and improvement made by the painter or anything else you think is worthy of recognition! You can cast as many or as few votes as you like, 3-5 is recommended but feel free to use more or less as you wish.
Voting will run for 5 days, after which the winners will be announced and the League table updated (and thanks again to TP^ DC Deputy Manager for organising that!). Without further ado, the entrants!

I think the Thorster might sneak away with it here.
My votes went in, there were some stellar paintjobs this time around. Ckig's Tarik Mansuri and Lechine's Cor'bax are probably the standout pieces for me.
Tarik for the sunburst yellow; its a colour so rarely seen, but it was done so well. The paint on the face added a lot of character too.
Cor'bax because its an old imagining of a Nurgle daemon, its properly sickly flesh. It doesn't have to be bright green and covered in goop and blood and puss, but it still looks like you'd catch some STI if you smelt it walk by.

My votes this month go to:
Best Painted: Ckig, Lechine and sockwithaticket. 3 totally different painting styles, all stunning examples!
Most effort/improved: Thraxas, this may be your first challenge, but in general terms that mini is one of the best I've seen from you! Ineedvc2500, you deserve a vote just for the effort that's gone into the conversion.
Most fitting: Midget Gems, of course! Your skill and knack for just nailing these ork character conversions is most impressive!
And one for the Thorster, because that's just amazing!
Great work from everyone, keep it up!

Talys, fine work as always.

Great work everyone, nice to see so many entries.
Looks like it will be another close month on the voting, with 2 votes separating the top 7 and I can see why some really well painted pieces, its making it very hard to choose between them.
Thraxas of Turai, I haven't paid to much attention to AOS but that is a great model and beautifully painted, got to give love to the Thor Toaster as well onemannoddle, I do like the Demon Prince of Chaos and Demon of Nurgle too
Thank you very much for the mention Para (and for running the challenge again), means a lot coming from you. Would love to see a closer shot of your Primarch to see the detail on the front of him, hope your essays go well. Also big thanks to anyone that votes for me, much appreciated

Some great entries this month, and well done everyone who managed to submit an entry.
My personal favourite is sockwithaticket, such smooth painting and great colour choices.
I also voted for Red Thirst, Inflatable Love Badger (???!!!), Talys and Lechine, so quite Mariney.
Thank you for any votes, am genuinely flattered at anyone who likes my painting.

Thanks for running this again para.
OK, (some of) my votes:
Inspector #264 - I painted that model when it was in metal, it was a pain to just assemble and almost as bad to paint, you've done a good clean job of it, I like the sword btw
ckig - Eye catching use of colour, well executed use of advanced painting techniques, and really smooth colour gradation on a tiny model.
Winter - I think you could have done a bit more or at least differently on the base, I don't think the water look works, that said I do like the snow effect up the legs I think it looks like a good effect. Nice work on the runes, wolf cloak and staff head.
Inflatable Love Badger - Typhon drowning in blood, doesn't the fluff say he is bloodthirsty. OSL isn't easy it doesn't look too bad so keep at it. The white armour and your paint work on his face look good, nice work
Well done to everyone who entered!

Cracking entries this month but time for a bit of voting - with Queen echoing through my sleep deprived head - here we are
Midget Gems - Great stuff. Totally the theme!! Does look like Mama Ork gave his hair a good comb before he left the house/hut!
ILBadger - great fig, pose is right on and a lovely paintjob to boot. Photo is a little dark but still gets my vote
djphranq - I really like this fig. The character and the pose shout out the theme. Love your basing. Nice smooth paintjob esp on the green armour plates
Paradigm - Mortarion gets a vote for sure - that lovely gritty, worn, dark 'yes I have been through the gak, thank you very much!' armour paintjob is very much your own established style and I likes it!!!!
Ineed - This is actually my #1 for this month's vote. Really cool conversion and sweet paintjob. This guy actually seems to be screaming out "There can be only one!!". Superb!!
Lechine - I dont like nurgle, nor his little dirty grubby servants.......usually!! This is do like though. Really lovely paintjob here. Gorgeous earthy colours and blends. You didnt rely on tons of slime and ooze to make the figure but focused instead on getting those gorgeous decaying yet subtle skintones. Great paintjob
And that's Jan's votes in. Needing coffee and back to bed!

As ever, this is far from an exhaustive list, just the ones that stood out to me this month.
Midget Gems - long may your Ork characters continue. They're a great tradition for this competition now.
Red Thirst - good effort, buddy. I like the array of bits you've used which really sell that he's a Blood Angel without becoming over powering. Good use of the Furioso Librarian bit on the pack.
Paradigm - I would urge people to zoom in on your Mortarion pictures, really helps to see how precise and intentional the gritty, grimy look is.
ckig - great colour choices. I actually think the face and hair are the most remarkable things about this model, though the whole thing's fantastic.
Talys - like the subtle BA touches on him and it's a cracking paint job. Does a lot to combat my reservations over the model itself.
Ineedvc2500 - monstrous. Those wings are fantastic.
Lechine - that is what decay looks like. Bleurgh. In a good way.
Paradigm, Matthew and Thraxas, thank you very much gents ( I assume you're all gents). You flatter me.

Thanks kindly for the vote.
To explain the base a bit, it is in the style that matches the rest of my army (Njal will be a playing piece rather than just a painted piece). The whole army was started a while back (5 or 6 years now) and my basing has come quite a way since then, but rebasing 200 + minis is a task I'd rather avoid for now.

What a great load of entries this month! I think Paradigm is right- this is the best month yet! I, as usual, restricted myself to five votes, but it was very hard to decide. Here is who I ultimately picked:
Inspector #264: Abaddon definitely fits the theme, and that is some sharp paintwork!
Thraxas of Turai: That Lord Celestant is perhaps the single coolest mini in the Age of Sigmar range, and you did a really good job on him!
Januine: As usual, you get one of my five votes. Those Kataphrons are amazing, as is that Alpha!
Paradigm: Mortarion looks great, and if a Primarch doesn't fit the theme, I don't know what does!
Talys: That BA Chaplain is simply amazing! I don't know what else to say!
Honorable mention to the Brave Little Thorster! Very clever even if I didn't vote for it! It was hard not to go ahead and put in six votes.
Thank you to everyone for showing off your painting expertise! Lot of good talent here on DakkaDakka! Special shout-out to Paradigm, of course, for making this happen even though he is busy with college! Looking forward to seeing everyone's entries for next month!

Voted.
Really tough as there were so many great ones here. My list started with 10 names and I had to work it down. Lowest I could get was 5.
4 out of 5 of my picks are 7% and higher in the polls.
Good job to everyone!
Maybe I will join in next month, but not likely. Competition is too good for me LOL
I'll add this: Ruberu's Warcaster has inspired me to order one of those figs. Looks like it would be great fun to paint. I bought a Legion Shepperd just because I liked the model.

Well done to everyone, I've really started looking forward to (read: obsessing over) these comp's. Thanks as always to Paradigm for running things, and personal thanks to Winter for helping me sort out my images- that'll come in handy for future comp's.
I voted for 11 (half the field), but for me, the standouts are:
Thraxis & Ckig - Top two this month for sure; attention to detail and solid use of advanced shading, highlights, etc...
Januine- Just clean lines; not easy to do with such complicated models I'm sure.
djphranq - also just clean lines (and a nice base). Simple but compelling.
Sock and Talys - In a field full of Roman legionnaire looking SM's, clean lines and presentation make these two stand out.

I think that most of us partake with no hope of winning, the likes of Januine, Sock, Talys, Ckig and a few others are clearly exceptional painters that will vie for the top spots each time they enter. But entering does serve to motivate you to get a particular miniature or unit done and the other entrants will similarly encourage you just as Ruberu's Warcaster already has.

I will try to keep the MG character tradition going

Many thanks to those that have slid a vote Abaddon's way, I am always grateful for any my paint jobs somehow manage to earn.

Thank you for the comment! Mine is also the metal version and I agree that getting him to stay together is a pain, the only bit stuck on tight is his head. However this was stuck on when I brought hin as an ebay rescue, so I had to paint round it as best I could, made it more fun I suppose! As for the sword I am quite pleased with it too, especially considering how terrible it looked after the first coat, glad I stuck with it tho.
ZergSmasher wrote:Inspector #264: Abaddon definitely fits the theme, and that is some sharp paintwork!
Many thanks, I never realised just how much gold he had until I started the armour trim!

Wow! This is unexpected. I checked the thread a few days ago and there was only like 5 votes! But wow! Thanks everyone who voted and for the kind words . It's a real motivator (and confidence booster).
I voted for Januine and Talys great clean paint jobs. Also Paradigm and Lechine for their dark gritty style, love that slime trail on Corbax. Maybe I have a thing for Nurgle. And also Thraxis because I really like the work on the mount, the scales and armour. Lovely stuff. Other notable ones for me were the Thorster, too cute! Inspector's Abaddon, I really dig the sword there, and Ineedvs250's Daemon Prince, nice conversion, I love the wings.
Great stuff all round, and grats to all who finished

Wow, what a week of voting! I believe this is the highest number of votes we've had for one of these, and I'm pretty sure this month's winner has broken the record for most votes ever!
And so to the top three:
In 3rd place
Januine's Kataphron Destroyers and Skitarii Alpha
In second place,
ckig's Tarik Mansuri
And winning with a record 59 votes,
Talys with a Blood Angels Chaplain
Fantastic work from you all this month! Thanks and congratulations to everyone who took part, keep up the good work, and I'll see you all for the next round of voting in 2016!

Cracking results there. Hate to be the geek buzz-kill, but 59 is actually the 3rd highest number of votes. Leading the way with 61 was Januine in August and 2nd was Buttery in September with 60. Still a superb effort to get that many though. Well done Talys.

Aha, I was thinking 57 was the highest for some reason. Still, as you say, bloody impressive.
