Welcome all to the 85th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds. March marks the beginning of the 2022-23 League rotation, so all scores are back to level and there's everything to play for over the next 12 months!

This month, as is traditional, we're kicking off with the theme Space Marines! Whether it's the clean and colourful good ones or the spiky, angry bad ones, the new-fangled big lads or the old-school but comparatively tiny ones, or even those action figures they do now, if it's a Space Marine, it's good to go! But that's not all; for those without any of the Emperor's Finest (or their villainous counterparts) kicking around, you've still got options. A tyranid whose base is covered in bits of dead Marine, or an Ork showing off some looted Astartes armour, that's good too. Finally, for those not of a Warhammery persuasion, anything that fits the literal defenition (ie. a ship-based soldier in space), whether its from Infinity or Alien, will fit the bill here if you think it does!


How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.


So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.


How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight GMT on 31st March. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

These three were made from scrap bits left over in a bag lot of spares that came off the eBay purchase to get metal Shining Spear parts (eight bodies mutated by too much glue to make these three).

Although I also have a model of the month Dire Avenger...now where did it go?

Mouse marines

Been looking forward to this one! I'll be entering Sergeant Castus, an exclusive model from last year for larger purchases on GW's website. Here's the proof:

I considered painting the Christmas Marines, but it felt weird to paint them in March.

Hmmm. Maybe I should’ve seen this coming and not painted my one and only unpainted space marines squad in February. I suppose I still have two terminators left that didn’t make it into the five for feb. I may as well do them to match this month or they’ll suffer another decade in the pile.

Or I could find the very worst eBay rescue shelter marine and give him a new home…

So painting Eldar in protest is a thing? Hmmm, I have a metal Guardian with a power sword I never got around to...

Would painting a Stormtrooper be in theme or in protest?

I mean, they're not Space Marines, but they are kinda like the Marine Corps of the Imperial Army.

You mean like from Star Wars? Definitely qualify as space marines, IMO.

i have no space marine models or anything space soldier/space marine related (not even bits). but, i do have a few Dark Eldar models. would it be alright if i join this Eldar protest?

To be honest, I hadn't even considered it being taken as a reference to Star Wars, though I do see where the misunderstanding came from as I used the original name while thinking about the Beret Troopers and even older Heavy Troopers.

Yeah in the end it depends on your interpretation of what a Space Marine is or isn't, and then it's up to the 'voters' if they find your interpretation convincing

Gonna paint some terminators. 4 from the Space Marine Heroes and one old bugger to fill out the squad.

Going to try this again with more terminators, except this time they will be of the Deathshroud variety.

So I found that other plastic Dire Avenger. So this photo will combine all the figures (although I will only enter 5 when finished, I want to complete them all).

That looks like an older model to me. Probably the previous metal sculpt, though whether it's actually metal or just finecast idk. I'm not nearly as familiar with the middling Eldar range as I am Imperial and RT models.
