Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 22 December 2016: Open Challenge
Welcome to the 22nd Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka! Each month, entrants use these challenges as motivation to get painting, push their skills, clear their backlogs and get feedback from the amazing P&M community here. Anyone is free to enter, whether this is your first model or your thousand and first!
This month is an Open Challenge round, so there is no set theme, so as long as it meets the rules below, you can enter whatever you like, whether that's the last handful of minis to finish off 2016's army building, a showcase piece to show off the skills you've picked up over the last year or the start of a new project for next one!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 5 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 4 images and one separate image would count as your 5 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st December and will end at midnight GMT on the 31st December. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
I'm in Blackshields mode these days, so I'll deffinitely enter some of them in this round... It will be close to a year since I started again in the hobby, it will be interesting to pull out all that was painted this year to see how far I've come...

My two painting projects for the month are a techmarine on bike and a Fire Prism. I’ll probably be entering the marine, but the month is going to be odd, so I’ll proof them both here. Who knows, I might enter them both!
I did start to put the red basecoat on the prism last night, but that should still be within the parameters of the competition.
G'day...seeing as this is an open challenge, and the last one for the year, I thought I'd take the opportunity to dust off these old lads, and try to give them a paintjob worthy of their greatness...round off the year with something pretty cool and out of the ordinary

I'm in with this Inquisitor:
The model is one of Raging Heroes' Toughest Girls in the Galaxy line. I saw some of those at my FLGS and decided I wanted to paint one, and the best use for 40k I could think of was as an Inquisitor (although there are a few that might make decent Sisters of Battle). I may also do three Servo Skulls as well, in which case I will post proof of those before I paint them.
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.
Grotsnik Corp. Sorry, No Refunds.

Proof (I know, there's no sign of Christmas just yet, but...)
(This could all go horribly wrong )

Loving the 90 models. That's a chunk of my bro's active army - he's not stopped using them since they were new

Great to see those old marines sneaking in the photo

How strict is the single-color rule? I've got a wrecked tank scenery piece I'm going to be working on this month, but I happened to do the "primer" coat in two different colors (brown for the dirt, gray for the tank). It's still the same first step with virtually all the painting work left to do, but technically it's not a single color.
There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

That'd be fine, so long as it's at the primed/basecoat stage it's generally ok.

I seem to be able to paint larger models better, so I'm going to attempt with my largest. Side note, my normal troops usually end up looking like absolute Gak WIP
Adeptus Astartes - Imperial Fists
Blood Angels - Archangels of The Storm
Cult Mechanicus - Agripinaa
Imperial Knights - House Hawkshroud
Astra Militarum - House Hawkshroud Knight Guard
The Tau Empire - Vash'ya Sept

Hmm...so I think I'm falling into the hype for the new traitor legions book...it's really got me back in the mood to work on my nurgle marines again...I've had a forgefiend sitting around for a while, and I started painting that lastnight - I only just thought to take a proof pic though...
I'll probably still be doing my oldhammer orks, but in case I don't get them done, I'll post this proof of my forgefiend as a backup

I say I hate painting vehicles. And I feel that I hate them. But I really mean imperial vehicles. I love painting Eldar tanks. I just hate painting most of their infantry and bikes. Well, the old bikes, the new ones aren’t that bad. And most of that is in cleaning the mold lines off the spindly little gits. But every Eldar vehicle I do I expect to take the month or so I spend on rhinos and the like, and end up finished in a couple of days.
But I have a soft spot in my heart for grav tanks. The Falcon was what got me into Eldar back in 2nd ed. The chassis on this guy might have been sculpted before some of you guys were born, but it holds up well, IMHO.
I think I also might have set a personal record from box to table on this guy. Bit over two weeks from when he showed up in the mail.
This is probably my final entry. But the month is young, and I might go (more) crazy. But if I drop off the face of the earth (which actually has a non-zero chance of happening) you can vote on this one.
