Subject: Dakka Unofficial Painting Challenge: Year One Retrospective!
The first year of the Unofficial Painting Challenge here on Dakka is over! The results are in, the League has been updated one last time, and now, I ust want to invite you all to take a look back over the past 12 months of challenges and celebrate the huge amounts of fantastic entries, the progress so many of you have made and the community spirit that has coalesced around the challenge greater than anything I expected when I started all this!
To kick things off, the League itself! We had a whopping 127 entrants, and the full League Table can be seen here. but I want to give a special congratulations to the top five entrants:
1st: Januine on 71 points 2nd: Midget Gems on 27 points 3rd: Talys on 26 points 4th: SJM on 26 points (tied with Talys on Points and on Highest Placing, Talys takes 3rd as he entered more Challenges) 5th: Kustomer D
Big round of internet applause for those chaps, and also to Nevelon for being the only entrant to enter and complete all 12 challenges (other than myself, and I kind of have to! )
Next, I have compiled a Hall of Fame, all the winning entries from each month. Some fantastic stuff on display here, please do pick out your favourites (I decided against a formal poll, but leave a comment!)
Haemonculus Minus The Merciless, by Januine: [/color] "Trick or Treat little monkeigh? They are but two sides of the same deliciously depraved coin don't you see....oh...no - of course you don't....."
What a fantastic collection of minis! Well deserved wins there throughout the year, and a true testament to the skill, range, ability and talent of the Dakka community!
What's more, I want to thanks and congratulate EVERYONE who entered any of these challenges, you've all done splendidly over the year and I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have, and that I'll see your names and some new ones in future challenges! Also, once again, a massive, massive thank you to TP^DC Deputy Manager for tirelessly managing the League table, and volunteering to do the same for the next year, and to Buttery Commissar, who kept the challenge going in the month where I simply didn't have time to run it!
Finally, an announcement: While this year's League has been for bragging rights and internet points, the next 12 months will have a prize at the end for the overall League winner! This year's winner, Januine, has kindly volunteered to paint a model for whoever takes the top spot this time next year, the idea being that each year, the winner will pass on the baton to their successor in the form of a painted mini. The exact details will be worked out closer to the time.
Anyway, that's me done for now, I'll be back later with a few shoutouts to specific members and entrants. In the mean time, please feel free to: - discuss your favourite entries from the year - Commend any entrants you think deserve the extra recognition for their improvement, quality of entries, committement to the challenges or whatever else - Post your collected entries (I'd ask that you stick them in spoiler tags), so many of you have come a long way in the last year and it'll be great to get all that in one place!

I only entered for the last couple of months but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It really pushed me to try and paint well. Thanks for organising it!
The variation in the style has entranced me. Congrats especially to those who stuck at it for the whole year. And of course congratulations to the winners! Well deserved!

Looking back there has been an amazing selection of work. It’s nice to see stuff from a wide variety of sources. Not just different GW armies, but other manufacturers. Also a wide number of styles. From crisp, clean polished looks, to gritty weathered. I know I probably should try, but I can’t bring myself to pick a favorite. So many good entries. Some of my monthly votes were because of how well the entry summed up the topic, even occasionally winning out over pieces that were technically done better.
For myself:
Spoiler:
This competition has helped me in a number of ways. It gently pushed me out of my comfort zone. I’ll admit to phoning in a few entries, but I tried to work in new things. Either techniques (such as the heat stress on the ven dread’s weapons, and the cloth effects on tabards and cloaks) or models I don’t normally work on (the nurgle champ, Oni) My photography has gotten a lot better as well. I use a light tent now, better digital tools, white balance, etc. I’m doing more freehand now, and while not perfect, it’s a major step up from my older attempts.
I also based everybody. That’s a major advance for me!
Looking back, I’m not very happy with 2/3 of my Eldar. The autarch and wraithlord are very “Meh". I do like the way the ranger turned out. (His squad mates were not entered into the competition, but I included them in his pic)
It was probably a mistake to go with the diorama-esque duel in “Never tell me the odds” While there are parts of the oni I like (the fire on the hand) overall I think she detracted from the good captain, who IMHO is the best thing I did all year.
I should probably stop rambling and go pick up a brush. It’s been a great year painting with all of you, and am looking forward to the next one!
As I mentioned in another post, this competition is what made me stop lurking and start posting here on Dakka. I entered 6 of the competitions and enjoyed the heck out of the experience every time. It's simultaneously very humbling and inspiring to do these and I would encourage anyone who is on the fence to give it a try.

As promised, my own thoughts on the year as a participant rather than the organiser.
First off, a few shout-outs to various members for various reasons:
- Ustrello, TP^DC, Midget Gems, GulGof TufToof and Zergsmasher, I think you guys have really upped your respective games over the course of the challenges; pretty much everyone has, but your efforts definitely stand out because of the significant improvements and the consistency with which you enter and push yourselves, very impressive!
- Januine, Talys, Iechine, you've all produced entries over the year that have really, really inspired me, in terms of painting quality, presentation, creativity and general awesomeness, so thanks so much for entering and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the coming challenges, even if it does mean another top 3 spot is going to continue to elude me!
- Kustomer D and Midget Gems... consistently the most creative, hilarious and well-executed entries. I think if this were a conversion contest the two of you would absolutely storm it, even as an overall hobby challenge you've both entered hugely impressive pieces, definitely some of the funniest!
- Picking out a favourite entry of the year is tough, very tough... if push came to shove, I'd be between FearPeteySodes' DE Venom, Jan's Archmagos and Castellax or Gitsplitta's Monster Mash...
And to wrap up, my collected entries from the 12 months and a few thoughts on each. Again, please do do the same, I'd love to see your entries all in one place to look over once again!
Spoiler:
Month 1: Space Marines: Wolf Lord:
Must admit I'm still a fan of this one. The pics are frankly shocking, but the conversion went exactly where I hoped it would, I'd still happily put this guy on the field, I think.
Month 2: Veterans: Word Bearers Champion:
This one is again one I'm still proud of. The face in particular, and the overall composition, still look good to me even though I know I could paint the whole thing better now. This was the only one of my entries to place this year (unless Lorgar makes it), netting joint 3rd.
Month 3: Fast and Furious: Prince Althran:
Month 3 I think is one of those periods where I think I kicked it up a notch. Lots of new techniques here, the NMM gold I still haven't bettered, the feathers, the various textures. I think the pictures let this one down, I was really hoping he'd place, but looking at the entries that did take the top 3 spots, that's some bloody impressive stuff that I couldn't come close to, then or now!
Month 4: Some Kind of Monster: Last Man Standing:
This one I was proud of at the time, looking back I can easily see so many areas where I was frankly lazy. The bases of the minis themselves, the diorama back section looks tacked together... the Broodlord is probably fine, but the rest, I could definitely have done better.
Month 5: Sneaky: Sudden Death:
Far from my best effort, I think. Possibly one of my most thematic entries, and the pose of the minis is nice, but the paintwork leaves a lot to be desired. Too much going on, lack of focus, from a technical perspective I'm definitely not that happy with it looking back.
Month 6: Rise of the Machines: TIE Fighter
If I recall, this one was a last minute entry. I'd not painted anything suitable all month, so I just threw that in. For what it is, I still like it, and it's very cool sitting on its shelf, but as a competition entry, it's neither flashy nor fitting.
Month 7: Never Tell Me The Odds: The Fall of Sauron:
A poor entry, this one, with terrible pics, but given that this was the month I started uni and had bigger things to worry about, I'm not going to beat myself up over it! But moving on, because it's a bit crap...
Month 8: Trick or Treat: The Other Dynamic Duo:
Two of my favourite minis there. Pics aren't great, but these guys are definitely one of my strongest entries.
Month 9: Princes of the Universe: Mortarion of the Death Guard:
Again, one of my stronger entries, but bad pics. There's actually an updated set of pics in my Horus Heresy gallery if anyone's interested.
Month 10: Open Challenge: X-wing Starfighters:
These didn't do that well in the polls, but for my first X-wing repaints I still think they look good! Not the most interesting in an open challenge, though!
Month 11: Up Close and Personal: Shattered Legions Command Squad:
Another late in the day entry, they're fine as tabletop minis but the pics aren't great and really, they're just nothing fancy. My model selection was pretty limited in January, though, and I did have a bunch of exams, so again I'm just happy I got something done!
Month 12: Size Matters Not: Lorgar of the Word Bearers:
Pleased with the mini, but typically he's the one thing I paint all month that doesn't want to photograph nicely! Oh well, we shall see how he does!

Subject: Re:Dakka Unofficial Painting Challenge: Year One Retrospective!
First of all I'd like to say a big thanks to Para, TPC and BC for keeping this thing going the year round. I used it as a spring board to reignite my interest in the hobby after a bit of power armour burnout + the reduced hobby time that came with starting a new job last May were causing me to waver a bit.
The different themes have prompted me to delve into the pile of non-space marine models (though some of those have been entered) that I'd accrued with the best of intentions, but never actually made a start on. My Malifaux stuff in particular had intimidated in me, but the contest got me to sack up and give it my best shot.
I don't seem to have enough time each month to do more than one infantry figure so my stuff probably never really grabs the attention in the way some of the multi-model or big model entries do, but I like to think I'm contributing something worthwhile. Some have been very kind with their words. Pleasantly surprised to find myself as high as 21 out 71 on the League Table.
I've found it interesting to see how diverse some people's talents are and how narrow the focus of others can be (I'll include myself in that, I only really do 'clean' paint jobs).
Anyway here's my entries plus a little commentary on each like Paradigm did with his.
Spoiler:
June - Some KInd of Monster - Demonhost
I'm very pleased with the pallid flesh and the black loin cloth, but I'm really not sure about my colour choices for the cables.
August - Rise of the Machines - Servo skulls
A lot of fun due to all the lenses which are always one of my favourite things to paint. The number of them meant quite a diverse number of colours were used which is always cool. Bone could be a bit more high contrast, but it's pretty smooth as is. Metallics, as ever with me, are a bit simplistic.
September - Never Tell Me The Odds - Deathwatch Angels Porphyr marine.
I love the blue I achieved on the chapter symbol. The rest is fine, but nothing particularly special. Shading seems a bit lacking on this one accross the board and the pose didn't work out as well as I'd thought it would. Different pair of legs perhaps.
October - Trick 'r Treat - Werewolf
My first non-GW entry and one of my favourite models. I don't really get opportunities to paint fur (bar a couple of tails on a Deathwatch Space Wolf) so this was a chance to do something different and push myself. I'm happy with how that came out and the strait jacket. Some of the transitions on the shorts aren't as smooth as I'd have liked.
November - Princes of the Universe - Blackshield Deathwatch Captain
Possibly the best rendition of my 'style'. back of his loincloth isn't as good as the front and the power fist, by din't of being resin, had a few edges that weren't super conducive to hyper neat lines. Can't think of much I would have done differently, even the metallics look to have some depth to them.
December - Open - Witchling Stalker
Possibly my best and most consistent effort? The blends on the robes are super smooth and I think I managed to shade the small areas of skin poking through the bandages on the arms pretty effectively. Sword blades are weaksauce, though. May go back and try something different with them.
January - Up Close and Personal - Assault Marines FAILED
Real life stuff happened in the last week of the month and robbed me of the time to finish these, which is a shame as I really like them. I worked hard on getting their poses believable and dynamic. White isn't shaded enough to account for pictures washing it out, but otherwise they turned out how I wanted them to.
February - Size Matters Not - Witchling Stalker
Not quite as uniformly well executed as the other Witchling, but I think parts of it are better. The side on parts of the robes are a bit disappointing. I didn't quite match the colour of the other one, it's a bit darker, but on it's own that's fine.
Roll on the next year of Challenges, I'll aim to compete each month this time.
I've really enjoyed myself this year, sadly I missed the first few challenges, my friend mentioned he was going to enter and although I was very nervous about having my work publicly judged I entered as well. Its hard to imagine its gone this quick but also I can't remember working on the models I first entered so bit strange time wise. I've investigated loads of new information because of this challenge e.g. colour theory, light and photography
I got a proper camera in September and you can really see how better photos reflect the effort on the paint jobs and I think I was getting better at painting then too.
The favourite entry is Januine's Crimson Slaughter Chosen, I like how many little details there are and you can miss bits of it if your not paying attention. Out of the ones I created my Fav has got to be the Santa Ork, I had the idea in the back of my mind when I entered in May and kept writing bits down to keep a track off it all, so happy how it turned out, it is closely followed by the Star Wars Orks.
This year has been a pleasure so thanks to everyone here whose made it want it has become. I'll try to carry on the tradition of my strange creations. I never thought I'd even place in the top 3 let alone win a challenge and then even come 2nd overall, thank you to whoever voted for me. It is very humbling and inspiring to keep going.
June
This Snakebite Warboss was another entry inspired by a French blog I somehow stumbled upon http://orkatitude.forumactif.com/t1388-du-snakebite I used Google translate after I'd looked at all the images which start on page 2, sadly the genius behind these snakebite creations died :(
July
In June/July I started reading the Gaunts Ghosts/Tanith Novels so decided to create one of the characters, I went for Larkin.
Aug
A Ebay random Bits box brought me most of this guy in a bad shape, after a taking him apart and some mods he came to life, also I learnt Yellow is a pain in the ass to paint
Sept
A new Camera and first real attempt at Greenstuff, Furry Orks are a success! The Star Wars Orks went down very well, I was totally amazed I got 3rd place
Oct
I carried on the Star Wars theme and tried to add some Halloween fright with glowing Orks, which mostly worked but screwed up the paint. (tip don't put chem light fluid on your models)
Nov
First try with some Greenstuff that wasn't gap filler or Fur, The Trenchcoat worked out quite well and managed to get a pose close to Highlander.
Dec
The Month Santa Ork came to town, Loved doing this but it was a hell of a lot of effort, Hes still not finished but I've had to take a break from him, I will do a base and more little bits on the model, maybe in the summer if that doesn't feel to weird.
Jan
After the birth of my Daughter I just went for a basic model, I really liked the pose, wanted a break from Orks and hadn't painted any SMs for 10 years so went for it
Feb
I felt I could do better on the Red so tried another BA Space Hulk Term and a plucking little grot to bash his brains in.

Well, hard to believe we've been doing this comp for a year now! I'll chip in my entries through the months and let everyone gawk (or gape in horror!) at my attempts to paint minis.
Spoiler:
April 2015-Veteran-Deathwing Knights
These guys were a step above anything I had painted before. This pic is not one of the ones I took for the contest (I took those with the camera on my iPod touch, which isn't very good), but one I took later with my good camera. I'm still pretty happy with how they came out.
May 2015-Fast and Furious-Flesh Hounds of Khorne
This is just one of them, I didn't even take a group shot. I feel like the models turned out okay, but the pics did not as I was just learning how to use the settings on my camera.
June 2015-Some Kind of Monster-Chaos Helbrute
I love this model, and it was really fun to paint it. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although the photo does not do it justice.
July 2015-Sneaky-Ravenwing Darkshroud
I'm pretty happy with this one as well, although the statuary turned out far better than the vehicle as a whole did. I really stretched the theme to make this fit in, but I really wanted to paint it!
August 2015-Rise of the Machines-Soul Grinder
This is probably the zenith of my painting to date. I am super happy with how it turned out, and I always get compliments on it when I use it in games.
October 2015-Trick or Treat-Cypher, the Fallen Angel
I really let myself down with this model. I feel like if I were to strip in and redo it it would turn out much better, but I don't want to do that as I think it is okay as a tabletop standard piece. Maybe someday I'll get another and do it right...
November 2015-Princes of the Universe-Tau Commander
This was the first Tau model I had painted in a while and certainly my best at the time. The photos do not do the mini justice, as the blue really pops in person!
January 2016-Up Close and Personal-Tau Breacher Team
These guys were a lot of fun to do, and established that my chosen Tau army color scheme worked on infantry as well as battlesuits. Again, they do look better in person than these photos would suggest.
February 2016-Size Matters Not-Tau KV128 Stormsurge
This is the largest 40k model I own, and by far the largest I have ever painted. I had loads of fun painting and assembling it, and it has gotten some compliments in the few games I've played with it, so I feel like I achieved something.
Well, there you have it, a year of painting challenges for me. I missed three of them, but maybe this year I'll get them all done! I posted a similar list in my P&M blog with all the pics from the comps except for the DW knights, so check that out if you want to see more pics of my entries (and the Stormsurge blog for more pics of that). Thanks for looking, and feel free to vote for the images in the gallery!
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Subject: Re:Dakka Unofficial Painting Challenge: Year One Retrospective!
Thanks for the kind words para and for everyone that has had kind words or anything really in all of my past entries
Spoiler:
Obviously my first model and while I really enjoyed it I can see a LOT of beginners errors in him. Though overall I was happy with him.
Now this one was one of my favorites. Not for the painting but for just how damn cool the death riders are. Once again some beginners mistakes, but a lot of improvement.
The model that started my raven guard a new. I really like guy but from my latest 40kRG to him it is a world of difference and I kinda should of waited to start on him. Granted at first glance he didn't fit the entry and I perhaps should of explained it better.
My firsts for a lot of things on this model, OSL, something not black painted , some new techniques for the flames. Going back I should of made the flames purple instead of green.
I feel right about here with this model I started to come into my own, and he is my best RGhq to date.
Love these guys, it is where I finally got my recipe down for RG skin and learned that my way of painting white sucked
One of my better models to date, and it started my love for the dark mechanicus and how much you can convert for them.
Well, I finally got around to doing this. I've thrown a quick collage of my 7 completed entries together:
I can see a progression in these. Partly that is due to photographing the minis which I do feel is essential. Dodgy photos don't sell these creations.
Interestingly, the end of 2015/16 showed me what I am capable of, but I didn't have time to carry them through to completion:
But the start of 2016/17 has truly shown me that I have improved. It is due to these challenges that this has occurred and I am glad I got over my fear of being mocked and entered. I was so overwhelmed by the support of everyone and it is thanks to that kindness that I have been able to produce this, a model that I am truly proud of:
I really hope my 2016/17 collage blows the 2015/16 out of the water. I also hope it has 12 entries.
As a final note. One thing that I have noticed throughout this year is that the Dakka Gallery voting function is not being used very much. I have tried to vote for all the completed entries over the last few months if they are hosted on Dakka and I think it is a great way to let people know where their standard is. Can I encourage everyone else to try and do the same. I personally think this could help others improve their confidence in their painting skills, but I can't impose that practice on anyone and never would, but I hope people will at least consider doing so from time to time.
So now on to the next year of challenges, let it begin!
GW - 670 pts || - 354 pts || - 46 pts || - 106 pts || LoTR - 400 pts (Evil) vs 0 pts (Good) || Space Hulk - 1/35 || Deathwatch Overkill - 0/50
