Welcome all to the 64th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is In A Supporting Role. From healers to spies, engineers to strategists, we want to see entries that represent individuals and units whose specialisation is in supporting their allies, rather than wading head-on into pitched battle.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.


So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.


How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of June and will end at midnight UK time on the 30tht of June. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Does supporting fire count?

Been a while since i joined one of these, so here I go




These are the 4 squaddies and the mascot of the falconers guild ball team.

For anyone that doesn't play guild ball, these guys are just walking around the board setting up the opponent and giving our buffs/debuffs so Devana (the team's captain) can swoop in and murderkill everyone.

Ready to have someone fix my tin kanz.

In the war torn city, the blood angels are pinned down trying to capture a critical contol point, heretics are dug-in heavily in a hab block that stands in their way.

And while I was at it I coated the other two but they are for another day

Don't trust anyone who tells you that a telepathic alien demagogue doesn't count as 'support', they are most likely just puppets of our Imperial oppressors

What kinda support we talking here? I got command support (Lieutenants out the wazoo), air support, APC tanks (vehicle support), and some space marine banners.

I am doing a Rhino. That support tank that transports Sister's of Battle into the fray...but other than being a protective shell for a turn or two, does not do a whole lot more.

Okay, knowing my predilection for swapping and changing I figured it might be wise to show a few options and see which I get done (happy to be more specific if that's not playing the game )



We have an ash wastes trader with his trusty mule (supplying goods), a circus barker (Slaaneshi cult disguised as a travelling circus), a Nurgle sensor servitor (surveying the state of decay on a target), and a general.purpose labouring servitor (scuttling around with heavy goods).

In case of miracles there's also 2 heralds in the background, but they're unlikely contestants at best

Trader is my favourite, but the probe servitor is probably the most likely as the only one with most of a scheme in mind at present.

Someone has to keep track of how many boltgun shells were fired. Someone has to write down the confessions of of the heretics as they are burned. Someone has to fill out Form 34-Ω11 ("Request for unguents suitable for anointing Land Raider engine blocks").

Who are those someones?

For my entry this month, I'll be entering a pair of supporting characters from the world of J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings. They may not have made it into the movies, but back in the day Games Workshop remembered they were in the book and made models of them; it's Tom Bombadil and his lovely wife Goldberry:

This should be really fun, as these two are fan favorites from the books and the models themselves are very characterful. GW had total artistic license here as the characters weren't in the movies, and I think they did a great job. The hardest part for me will be doing these fine models justice.

I don't really have any models to paint that fit with the theme this month. Would this be acceptable as an entry? They're the ghost warrior drones that used to come with the old rogue trader era eldar spirit warrior dreadnought/walker... thingie...

I will do a mixed entry, the squat bounty hunter will be painted for my Space Marines army and work as a techmarine and the grots... well you can't get more supportive than grots

The only thing in my queue that fits the bill are some javalin wielding marauder horsemen, supporting by offering some much needed ranged attacks and causing distractions where needed. I have already sprayed a little bronze onto the base coat. Is this too much to be eligible?



If it's too much already I'll just have to bow out.

For this month, I'll be painting this Wrenchmouth and its two handlers from Bad Squiddo's Ghosts of Gaia line:

I'll be following Nevelon and doing an Imagifier, this one from the Dominion/Celestian box. I had intended to assemble her before the proof photo, but as you can see she's got sixteen (!) pieces, and my bench is a little cluttered with a medical facility for the LoER terrain contest right now. So she's next on the build list... I've got the one from the army box as well, so I might throw here in as well.

May swap to some celtic war dogs and handler, or a ballista crew, but for right now, my plan is these guys from Old Gamers workshop:

Was it painted entirely in this month? That’s the one hard rule. Everything else has a lot of wiggle room.

Magus WIP. As this went pretty fast I'm thinking of throwing in two extra Aberrants from the DW:Overkill box, who quite obviously aren't combatants but regular citizens supporting our cause through their hard work in the mines. Hope it's okay as an additional proof pic for just these guys?

So my order of Grey Seer will not be arriving next week as planned so I've decided to go with this host of supporting characters - 2 Lieutenants, 2 Company Vets and a primaris standard bearer! All from different companies but that's the way the news goes!


Got a little excited however and began slapping on some paint before I took a proof!

Made a pretty decent start today, skin, rats and a couple of cats left to base coat.

I'm in with the Espern Locarno model from Blackstone Fortress - I really like all of the models from the game and I reckon a navigator is a really important support role. I imagine this guy being pretty impressed with his own importance.
He in turn is going to be 'supported' with some bodyguards...I'll put up more proofs if I need to!
