Subject: Classic metal models coming. Anybody want them?
[DCM]
Chief Deputy Sub Assistant Trainee Squig Handling Intern
If we’re going off actual models?
MkVI was the first properly kitted Power Armour, with RTB01. Before that, there were metal models which were somewhat messy as the design studio hashed out what worked and what the final product would look like.
RTB01 are infamously dinky models. And so we got a later boxed set of what would be christened MkVII.
The rest is a rationalising of early, random sculpts, possibly test sculpts.
Random fun fact? Originally, it wasn’t until MkIV that Power Armour Helmets were separate parts of armour. MkII and MkIII were fixed helms.
Fed up of Scalpers? But still want your Exclusives? Why not join us?

Member berries are toxic as far as I'm concerned. Seeing how I wasn't around for the metal times, I have zero interest in buying a hassle. Abbadon's nickname was Abbadon the Armless, wasn't it, because they kept falling off. No thanks.
I've literally never had Abaddon's arms fall off in the 25(?) years of owning the model.
Likewise.
But then I spent the 5 minutes all those ages ago to pin mine....
That said? I really do like the current plastic version of Abbadon alot more than I ever have the original.
For me it comes down to what sculpt I like far more than the material it's cast in.
I thought I was going to buy the new Abaddon until I saw both the price, and the scale. The new one is stupid-big.
So I stick with my old Abby, who is very comfortable chillin with his Terminator cohort of the same era.
Lord Damocles wrote: I'm not sure why Abbadon's arms should have been any more prone to falling off than any other metal Terminator of the period; or why pinning them wouldn't be a simple task?
Well, laziness, personally - although my Abby was armless on purpose, I got him to represent my warlord, so the sword and gun-claw went into the bits box (and were recently attached to modern plastic chaos Termis) in favour of a pair of lightning claws plus a head-swap. Nowadays you can just get a 9'6" naked woman off etsy - a mini I mean, not an actual one (PM me if you know a seller though).
I will go for multi-part metals - got a gen 1 and gen 2 Obliterator, both of which I just slathered superglue on and hope not to accidentally drop - but I'm most fond of the one-piece sculpts, with the weird little quirks of posing side-on, or holding their weapons out sideways, to avoid any depth gaps. Being totally serious, I find a real charm in the 'style' created by that limitation, and the quite inventive ways the sculptors sometimes managed to roll with it to create compelling poses regardless. That's what 40k looked like back when I'd pore through White Dwarf and gaze at the Eavy Metal pages in awe.

Asmodai wrote: I vastly prefer plastic over metal - easier to clean-up, less pinning involved on larger models, and generally fits together without lots of gaps to greenstuff.
However, there's a number of models that are only in metal I'd buy in a flash if they came up for order.
Metal is still leagues ahead of Finecast.
Oh my Lord, the Bretonnian Standard Bearer. Lets put this huge chunk of metal 8 inches in the air over this light plastic war horse. That's when I decided to magnetize my movement trays and bases.
My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

It is a shame they released either an =][=-scale model or a 3-Up instead of a proper Abaddon with the recent kit.
With Abbadon I don't really mind the current models size at all.
It's easily handwaived away - He's just been mutated by Chaos.
His pice tag on the other hand....
Despite having owned the original since it was new, I've rarely used him to date. So even though I like the current sculpt much more than the metal one? I'll not be replacing him (unless I come across an incredible deal on one). Ive no qualms about spending $ on my hobby, but that $ is honestly better spent on other models I like that'll actually see use. And as a display piece? Well, there's alot of stuff higher on my list than new Abbadon.

Armless Abaddon was a meme because of some random 4Chan thing calling him Failbaddon and using the model to illustrate that point.
It was never, as far as I know, about his arms falling off. I have two of the original Abaddon. Haven't broken in ... hold on... *checks Lexicanium* ... bloody hell... 27 years!
But on topic, yeah, I can live without metal models. I actually prefer non-Forge World resin to metal. Plastic all the way for me. Plus I pretty much own every single one of the minis GW is about to bring back, so there's that.

But still somehow only takes up 2 spaces in a Land Raider . . . Or can ride in one at all.
It's Chaos? Maybe the LR is just carrying a little Warp gate around in it, not the actual people.
(This is my default explanation for how Wave Serpents/Falcons operate BTW. There is NO WAY a squad of anything fits in thier holds. Especially not wraithguard. It's even sillier if you own an old Armorcast Wave Serpent.....)

Yeah . . . no, thank you.

What you have to remember is that the individual infantry models themselves are not proportional, but have their own skewed "heroic" scaling. Like, if you put a realistically scaled human soldier next to a Guardsman, the Guardsman, (even the new ones, nice as they are) would look like a cartoon. But if you took the actual height of a given infantry model and compared it to the dimensions of their respective transports, they're generally not far off, and in fact the vehicle models often represent something much bigger than you would think. But because of the goofy infantry proportions, the models don't look like they would fit even though a lot of the time they're really not that far off*.
*Although it's skewing off again now that everything is becoming upscaled.
But Abaddon himself is atrociously out of whack.

Depending on how crazy they got with the prices, I could see myself dropping money on this too - even though I've already got 40 of the beggars painted (plus two converted Officers)...

Remember though, I'm not the guy worried all that much about Abbadons scale.

I love metal models, and I'm a big fan of all the CSM ones they're offering. I'm not a fan of the prices, though - £24 for a single infantry-size character?! Get in the bin with that idea.

Do it! It’s fun.
Not pure RTB01, but mostly era accurate. Because sometimes you need to put the stupidly old stuff on the table for another round.

I want another metal Typhus. I went to gamesday Baltimore to get him a week early. One of my favorite models to paint. I've painted 4 at this point.
I spent $70 on eBay for a Red Gobbo.
I eagerly await GW selling the metal bulldog tyrant guard again. I'll spend an entire paycheck on them. Best Tyranid models ever made.
The 4th edition tyrant with alien queen head.
The old Skarsnik is superior to the new one.
I hunted all over for a metal Big Mek with Kustom Force Field. I even offered to buy mine back from the guy I sold it to... Who flatly refused even though he hasn't used it in years not changed my paint job on it.
Settled for a resin one but I wasn't happy.
Metal was fantastic. Resin almost made me quit the hobby. I scrambled to get all the Blood Angel characters before the change.

They handwaved it away earlier than that, he was always a giant even among Space Marines, and IIRC even had to have custom made Terminator Armor. Which is why he can wear a Primarch's lightning claw.
My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

NorthernXY wrote: I've never had a metal model. GW will start selling "made-to-order" classic models in metal in early May. Do enough people really want these in order for it not to just be a waste of time for GW? Can they hold the same detail plastic does, if not, what's the point of going backward? I know I don't like them; on the whole, they look Votann, Fabius Bile especially.
I think it really depends what you grew up with. But the sounds of it, for you, that's plastic.
For those that us that grew up with metal, plastic miniatures feel cheap and crappy. I've been weighting the bases for a long time just to make them "feel" nice in the hand. And paying fistfulls of dollars for a box of plastic that must have cost peanuts to produce just feels really wrong.
Metal miniatures really feel like mini-sculptures as opposed to "toys". There's a sense of "quality" that plastics just will never have. They also feel like much more of a human skill craft as theyre hand-scuplted; which also means they usually come in 1 piece, if not minimal pieces. Meaning you're never going to be expected to paint miniscule computer generated details in places no human can properly fit a brush.
Granted, plastics do have advantages as well. They're much easier to modify as well as transport, and being extremely light they don't get damaged as easily if you drop them.

I've got the metal Typhus from back in the day. One of the best metal sculpts they've done IMHO, and he's a pretty solid brick so he's pretty hard to break, even that scythe of his.

Despite some confusion regarding delivery, apparently he's waiting at my local GW for collection a week on Saturday
