You would absolutely hate one my brothers then, he seems to have the uncanny ability to make as much mess as possible, i usually find paint everywhere on our worktable (not to mention PVA glue, sand, static grass, snow etc.). He also does not properly clean the brushes, so half the time when i get a brush, its stuck together by PVA glue. (Just as i was typing this out i found out that he left a brush in a cup of water he was using to clean there goes another perfectly good brush ). And does many more things and make my blood boil. Did i mention he is two years older than me?

Anything about the fact that I have beer in my starbucks cup coming from a 12 yr old. I also hate hearing country music ringtones on someone's cellphone midgame but that's an entirely different beast to slaughter. It's just an issue between me and country. Or me and beer. Or me and kids. Or me and cellphone interruptions... meh... you pick which one is the most dysfunctional I can't decide.

/troll on. I now need to road trip to your game shop with a shoebox. /troll off.

My big pet peeve as of late is random people telling me wow that (random mini I just finished) looks great. All you need to do is "blah blah blah" and it will be pro quality. This is usually from people who can't paint their own minis to save their life. I'm far from pro painter but I do better than table top quality. If you can't paint don't offer advise, especially when it wasn't asked for in the first place. >.<

"You need to get laid"

I myself have a very active and healthy sex/love life. And I am sure many other gamers out there do as well. Yes, the stereotype of us gamers is that of a socially awkward teen, or a socially awkward adult, is true in some cases. But just as often, if not more so, it is the opposite. We do this because we enjoy it. Not because we can't get a date and lack friends.

Hey I feel ya there bro. In my earlier years I was embarrassed to tell a potential GF that I played dorky games and geeked out painting figs. Nowadays, I bathe in it. Last few GFs I've been involved with actually wanted to paint stuff, and were fascinated by the creativity involved and fluff... far more interesting a catch than going to the bar to watch the baseball game, right? worked for me. Someone gives me the 'that's so geek' kind of treatment I just laugh at their own pathetic passtimes. Oh yeah, it never hurts to show up at the college gaming club with your GF all decked out in low cut top, sexy skirt and pushup bra and so on, with concert tickets for a rock show later in hand, just to make an appearance and bust that stereotype to pieces as all the jockish MTG players who MADE FUN OF US look on in awe. Fun memories.

Chicks dig creativity. That's just the way it is. Painting is a lot more creative than following baseball stats. I learned this after many years of trying to hide my geek side, and it works out better when you are just open and fun and enthusiastic about it, rather than embarrassed by the social stigma.

I've never been embarrassed about it. I've always been open about it, to the point of taking rule books for games to work to read before my shift started, or while on a break. In college my friends and I would play D&D in the middle of the lounge for hours on end. In highschool my friends and I would play Risk in the cafeteria most days during lunch.
And as for the bringing your girlfriend to the gaming clubs, back in college I helped run the anime club at the school. And a few times my girlfriend(at the time) would come down from the city which she went to school in, and join us for the night at the club. One of the guys(now one of my best friends) still mentions how pissed off he was when he found out not only did she have a boyfriend, but that it was me.

I know right..its either I play with the terribly annoying kid, who cries when someone calls him out on cheating, or its the gigantic guy that uses his girth to waddle back and forth to cause movement in his massive form, or the skinny, underfed, twig that lives in his car outside the GW, or in his moms house and he's 25 years old.

Makes me mad, man, I just want a few normal guys.

Oh wait, those guys play fantasy.

So I play fantasy now.

bah... I think the biggest genepool of gamer types are highly competetive yet athletically challenged people (too gangly tall, too fat, too shot, etc) from prosperous families who are capable of wasting $2000 bucks on a hobby, and probably drive nice cars to nice jobs and are somewhere in their college years or late twenties. Certainly MOST I have met are like that. This is kind of the standard I've seen.

My big brother owns a dozen armies and 3 or 4 different tables in his basement that is entirely dedicated to gaming and modelling. He is a great guy, and very welcoming whenever I come to visit. His friend pulls up in a sports car with all his models, etc. Just a different walk of life from what I usually kick it with. Tack on to that group the KIDS, who have been playing less than a year and got 3 land raiders for xmas and so on, and you realize that you are often surrounded by socially awkward people who are of above average income.

Suits me fine, I build my army out of the models I have managed to patch together, and kind of think it's rude when that college kid with the trust fund asks me something like "why don't you put 3 more warwalkers in there" or whatever advice...

"well because I don't have those models and I have to pay my own bills kiddo" is the answer I would like to give but instead, for the sake of diplomacy, I just say something along the lines of "Thats a good idea, I'll look into that when I can, now lets just play..."

Erm, i don't see the problem with what cars people drive or their income... the hobby doesnt have a preset income level before you become a non proper gamer...

Some people are lucky to have a well off family. You shouldnt complain because they spend money on the hobby.

As for the guy saying why not use X, maybe hes just being nice and giving you suggestions or ideas... no need to inwardly bite his head off for making suggestions.

Not trying to make this personal so please dont take it that way, but it does (Least for me it did) feel like you don't like people with money in the hobby or nice cars talking to you about ideas for units you should get.

I don't take it personally, and perhaps to correct myself and clarify: I don't like the condecension that I often experience from 'people with money' in their attempts to be 'helpful' when really they are just pointing out that you don't have all the toys they have. I have no objection to good advice, but good advice that they know cannot be followed seems a bit demeaning and 'superior' to me. For now I just play with the models I have been fortunate enough to gather, and appreciate the game for what it is. I have another addiction to worry about that's way more costly than playing a game, (check out the price of a good guitar or Rode microphone for instance). Hey we all pick our money sinks. Giving advice about what I should buy just seems kind of condescending to me when it comes from a guy who is driving his daddys flashy car.

Hey I have moved back in with my mom from time to time too. I helped pay her bills, helped with chores, but at least I had a place to restart from. It's hard to bring a girl home from the bar when you live with your mom though.

Our generation (by that I mean the broad spectrum of ages who's parents are baby-boomer generation) is in the unfortunate position that our parents generation either already own everything and like to charge us to use it for their profit (i.e. landlords, real estate). They also have job security where we coast from one wage slave job to the next unless we are fortunate or smart enough (I am neither) to get a masters degree.

When our parents were young, it was a reasonable assumption that you could eventually buy your own house someday with your hard earned money working at the local gas station or ice cream place.

We don't live in that world any more, they kind of used it all up. Now we live in a world where you can work hard 40 hours a week for a jerk of a boss and still be behind on bills, so you have to get a roommate, and that opens up entirely new personal difficulties.

So don't feel bad, man. There is no shame in living with your parents. Heck I moved out at 17, moved BACK at 25 for a few months after my travels, again at 29 after getting unemployed, again at 32 after quitting my band. It's nice to have a mom that loves you and understands that we don't have the same reality financially that they had in their younger years. Now I'm 35, and again have my own place and have for quite some time... but you never know. Just be thankful that you have the safety net. The world isn't fair, but that's why family is important.

Still it sucked trying to bring a girl home.

Well, I for one make sure I shower from time to time, don't have a child-molester-looking moustache, and am not horribly competetive towards a 10 year old. Maybe that's just me. That stereotype, however I have seen (especially at conventions)... are you such a big low-self-esteem jerk that you have to argue about rules with a 10 year old just so you can prove you are superior? Bet ya feel real good after you win the arguement with his confused lil' self. That is why I don't want to play kids, and if I do, try to be nice.

It's too bad that couldn't be more of the gamer stereotype. We just want to have fun playing, and so do the kids, and it's okay. Just lay off the fast food and get some deodorant and for god's sake get a T-shirt that covers your navel. For the sake of the Imperium!

I hate hearing "imperial armor" as an excuse for using units that are not in your codex. Sorry we don't all have that option. There was a guy I met who insisted he could take the superior and cheaper drop pods in the FW book for his army because he didn't like the ones in his codex, because they were FW models so it's all legit. His gripe was that the BA codex didn't allow missile launchers and the FW book did, so he can just pick and choose? Every Codex is written at least with an intention of balance. Some armies get cheaper troops, or budget buy heavy weapons, or cheap tanks, but get raped on elites and fast attack point costs and so on, so there is a semblance of balance. FW screws all that up (unless you play imperium stuff in which case you have 10x more options for units than anyone else does)

I crawled back to my fellow GWS store, to see what was happening, since i was away for 6 months.
And to my surprise, the incredibly small room, was jam packed with children, most younger then 15.
I had to swim pass the swarm, until i poped out at the back of the store, where the space marines shelved.
Again to my surprise, most of the shelf was empty. When i was still a regular at the place, it was always stocked
and full, but this time it was empty. Not literally of course, there was still 1 tactical marine box, 2 terminators, and a dreadnought
and old calgar, but it seemed very malnourished compared to what i remembered.

I hate what GWS has become lately, I feel betrayed and im incredibly disappointed.

This is from the perspective of a broke college student currently stuck having to live with his parents (I'm only 21 if that matters)

Mom: you spent half your paycheck on tiny metal men? Great, if you keep spending money like this you're gonna live here your whole life.

It should be noted I make around $500 (before taxes) a week and I only did that once. I pay rent to my parents (I do work around the house), I buy my own food and own my own car. I wish apartments weren't so damn expensive otherwise I would have moved out by now. Florida sucks

On topic,

Yeah introducing GFs to the hobby is something I just avoid. The whole "Yeah I'm flying to this cool city for an event... to play a game... with plastic figures"

Eh, If people press me about it I'll explain, but I'm not a fan of having to go through the motions of "You do what?"
