I definitely agree with that.
Quite often do I see wonderful conversions/kitbashings that get a basic (even sometimes worse) paintjob in the end.
Anyway, I chose a stock model with a stock base, and I knew it could cost me some points.
@ Whalemusic : I'd be interested in your feedback too !

That kind of results in 18months is pretty more than just decent, it's GREAT !!! You're on the right track mate

I will go so far as to say (and really, this is a general observation that does not reflect this competition), i think "kitbashing" is a relatively basic skill when it comes to miniatures, and in my book, holds little value next to painting execution. ie...an exceptionally painted stock model would still win out to a less exceptionally painted model that had been kitbashed. Not to say this was the case here, i still believe j paint rightfully earned the spot Just, if i were a judge, thatd be my criteria.
I especially like that specific model : the bionics on his right arm, the plasma rifle, grizzled look make it an awesome mini. And I knew it was supposed to have a backpack, so you got a few points for the GS
As for the judging, let's be clear : you all knew beforehands the criteria that we judges would have to evaluate ! And we judges had to comply to those rules, obviously (otherwise it wouldn't be fair)...
Nerdfest had given the scale of points in the basic rules, so... You guyz had to know that a stock model would obviously lose points when it would come to the "kitbash / build" criteria !!!
Now if Nerdfest hadn't, then I could understand your point... But right here, there were rules.
Just like the others that put minimal efforts into the base, that was 30pts out of the line !!
Just sayin' uh

We knew it.
We did it on purpose 'cause we aimed THIRD place instead of first one.
I cry every night since I won't have that lovely Nerd pix on my room wall, it would have been perfect just over my bed.

Totally agree with you yggs. We all knew the rules! And i cannot say enough i think the competition was strong and fair I do appreciate the kind remareks about the model too but i do want to look a little about this modelling/painting phenomenon...
Ok....so seeing as my above comment carried some weight, in a way, i just want to say...that it came off more arrogant than i intended it to...upon my reflecting on the post. :( i certainly dont want to be perceived as obnoxious or conceited and i wasn't looking down my nose at the concept of kit bashing. But since a few agreed, Damo, mind if we look at the topic a little more in depth for the sake of discussion? i think what i *should* have said...was that IMO, points should be *given* if the kitbashing contributes to the over all composition of a model. In some cases, for instance, some of the models needed no such additions...whats to contribute by adding more to the model? However, i dont know how i feel about taking *away* points because someone choses a model that they like that doesnt lend itself to kitbashing at all (im speaking generally here) I guess at the end of the day, it all comes down to effort. In whichever form it is, painting modelling or both...
Sorry for dragging this on lol...who else am i gonna discuss this kind of stuff with if not for you guys?

First off, great competition. Well run and brilliant in concept.
I knew that this was a painting competition, and that i would definately have no chance of winning. I joined to try and see how well I could do against the big boys. I am perfectly happy with the results.
The winners are simply brilliant and I am sure that probably 4th 5th and so on where all tough calls.
I am probably the most extreme kitbash/conversion scratchbuilt model in the competition, sooooooo......
IMO
I did mine as a setting for the faces, the comp was about painting faces. I wanted to give my faces a good setting, no different to adding a detailed base really. It was clearly stated in the criteria for the comp that points would be awarded for adding a bit of character to bog standard models. I fully expected everyone else to follow suit. I see now I should have interpreted it as "you must enter a standard imperial model". This is cool and fine. I am happy with this. I am happy with my entry except the limits of my own skills, which I am trying to improve. I look forward to learning more from the great entries made in this competition, and am enjoying getting great feedback and constructive criticism of my entry.
I genuinely grateful to Nerdfest for hosting a brilliant competition, and to all the judges and other entrants, even the ones who fell away, for making it a great experience for me.
Thank you.

I felt like your's Cam was indeed the most bashed. Like you said, the goal was to frame the face, and I think that may be where the problem was. I found I was much more interested in the ork than the SM. The ork really was the show, the SM was just a victim (I know they both got messed up).

Hey guys, still waiting for a couple of addresses from the winners ;-) I found the posters thankfully! Nerdwench had thought they were Christmas wrapping paper and popped them in the spare room! once i get some photo paper for my printer I'll whip up a great framed Nekkid-Nerdfest and then send them along with the Nerdcademy award :-)
