The style is growing on me. Was never a fan as such, but I can see it being an entertaining theme for a quick game with mates or family.

Project Update #11: Attack From Space
Posted by Mantic Games ♥ Like
Shazam! That’s another Stretch Goal under the bridge. This is already shaping up to be the most successful first day of a Kickstarter we’ve ever had here at Mantic, and it’s still going! Seriously, you guys rock.

Okay, time for something special…. you want cool characters? Let’s get you some cool characters…

$185,000 – “Attack From Space!” Comic Book Miniatures

Following Mars Attacks’ bicentenary last year, the guys at Topps have been working on all sorts of awesome licenses, including a series of amazing graphic novels with IDW Publishing. The “Attack From Space” arc features some awesome characters, and they’ve inspired our next Stretch Goal!

Yes, if we hit $185,000 we’ll be able to fund two new human characters: Buck Spencer and… bear with me here… Xiuhcoatl. (I hope I spelled that right.)

Not only that, but we will produce the most feared warrior in the Martian army – General Zar, Tor’s arch-rival and Earth’s greatest threat.

These guys are based on the awesome comics from talented superstars John McCrea and John Layman – and they are seriously cool!

We’ll put together a special “Attack From Space” Comic Book Miniatures Pack with these three figures and make it available as a Core Add-on for $20, and include a couple of new scenarios so you can use these characters in your games of Mars Attacks.

I can’t wait to get these models in the flesh and paint them, so come on! Let’s smash this one!

Who want bugs next? Giant Bugs? We should do Giant Bugs!

$200,000 – “Attack from Space” FREE UPGRADE: Sidney Rose and Henry

This is a BIG one – a special comic-book inspired bleeding cool goal if your ask us – for Sidney Rose and Henry the Giant Flea.

Giant Mutant Bugs are a staple of the Mars Attacks universe – they’re often featured eating US Marines and harassing busty women!

If we hit this goal, we’ll make it and include Sidney Rose and the Giant Flea in every “Attack from Space” Core Add-on Set for FREE.

Want to know more about Giant Bugs? Help us fund the “Attack from Space” Comic Book pack.

is the aztec a time traveler?

Because that gives me an in to beg for a Dinosaurs Attack! expansion.

That aztec might end up being a "counts as " Turok. Love the ridiculous gun.

Curious to see the fleas. The guy has multiples doesn't he? I wonder if they'll all end up in the same core expansion.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

That's how I took it, that it his specific flea. I wonder how big the mini is gonna be. A 2X2 board can only hold so much and the flea looks huge in the comic.

Yeah... Even if the rider was fairly small for a human... the flea body alone is twice as tall as a human, at least. And its longer than it is tall at least in central mass, then there are the legs! It would be what, 6" big? I bet they scale it down quite a bit, I can't see it going over 3" tall, with a bit more after the rider. Anything else would be too good of a value for a freebie thrown in on a $20 set. At least, methinks.

The fleas are all his.

Basically, the story in the comics is that he owned a flea circus, and then after the martians attacked, he found some of the chemicals they were using to make the insects huge and used them on his (already well-trained, highly intelligent) fleas to fight the martians.

I'm in with a $90 EB Will of Man. I'll see how it develops - kind of expected more figures to be in the base game but maybe some will get added down the line.

It sounds like they're working towards each set of martians/soldiers to be 10 each and I assume we're going to see all of the characters from the Mantic blog updates... That still leaves the punk kid, the cop, the para military guy, the fed up office worker with a ray gun, not sure there may have been one or two more after that even... Seeing as the rocket guy was all-new, it makes me think those others will be core set, or the way things are going I guess they may do a bundle of survivors as their own expansion set too.

Remember that your Will of Man comes with that $50 credit towards more stuff, that could be 24-30 more models pending stretches and if you spent it all on soldier/grunt expansion sets.

So when can I get this comic related stretch goal?

Spoiler:

For those looking to pickup the Comics at a slight discount (and digitally), head over to Comixology. While the latest issues are full cover price, older issues are reduced by a dollar or two and collected editions are generally around $10 or less.

So is the Aztec a time traveler? What's his deal?

I wonder if we'll see those cyclops style Martians at some point.

Savage Dragon's fought the Martians too y'know. Then again he's also fought with Madman, Wildstar, and Marshall Law. I wonder if Marshall Law ever fought Martians. I know he fought Pinhead... and ended up in Beanworld at one too point I believe.

The aztec was taken prisoner by the martians, frozen, then recently defrosted.

The guy on top of the flea looks a little small, but I'd rather that than the model taking up the whole table. I like it overall, though I had no idea this was part of the mars attacks universe. I just always liked the movie.

This KS isn't based on the movie, but on the new comics (which are just as good, and have a lot of the same stuff.. they even make and use a sonic weapon in one of them, as well as the personal cloaking devices).

The modern 21st century is the big difference. I'd say on the whole it's basically really similar to the movie, only bringing in a lot of elements from the 60's cards too.

Good call on size. Still looks big but it doesn't take up an unreasonable bit of table real estate.

Yeah, I read that on the KS site this morning. Not upset by it or anything, just more stating I didn't know there was this much "extra" stuff besides marines and big headed Martians. But just because I didn't know about it doesn't mean I won't like it. Guess I'm gonna have to go read some of the comics.

^Definitely recommend giving them a read, they're great. I picked up a copy of the first digital compendium which has the first 5 comics and really liked it.

@Everyone: Any ideas on how to structure the freebie/ add-ons list in the OP for this one?

This KS is a bit of an odd one in that you get to pick the makeup of your core pledge via add-ons, and freebies are attached to add-ons, and I'm trying to figure out how to best explain/ track that.

I guess just name the bundle and and put the price beside the name. Then, put what's included below.

I won't be signing on for the Mars Attacks KS - I respect the license but it's not my cup of tea, and I put too much into Deadzone as it is - but it's fun to follow these things, and the commentary on Dakka is excellent as always. Hope no one minds if I comment.

I own the Gears of War game, and the figures (all of them Remy sculpts) are indeed excellent. I'm intending to use the baddies as Marauder replacements, actually, a substitution that will render that mediocre faction awesome. If the Mars attacks figures are cast with the same material and to the same standard, then you guys will have nothing to worry about.

Regarding Sidney and the Giant Flea, kudos to Mantic for bringing the weirdness so early in this campaign. The army soldiers, as Squig has noted, do indeed look excellent. The civvies are full of character. The Martians look good as long as they get those brains looking brainy. But for me, the glory of this universe isn't the rank and file but rather all the bizarro stuff on the fringes, and the more of that they pack in, the better.

On the Sidney / Flea sculpt, I have two concerns. One, they don't have to render Sidney smaller than the soldiers, Martians, etc. That Flea is big enough to carry a standard-sized figure, and the game will look better overall if they maintain a standard scale. Second, the renders make it a little hard to tell, but I think this figure may suffer a bit from 2-D itis. In other words, Sidney and his Flea look like they might be narrower than they need to be or should be. I hope not, as for me, that would ruin such an otherwise promising figure. And if they're really doing these figures the same way the Gears of War ones were done, then the casting process should not be an issue for making Mars Attacks figures like these fully 3-dimensional.

If you look at a real flea it is a very narrow thing compared to it's length (or height) so I think it looks fine
