It’s a shame that you don’t think you’ll finish the engine. It’s already looking cool, that base is fantastic, it certainly looks like a nice sewer!

I managed to get the cannon done on time, after all. (With the one day extension, but who's counting?)
Thanks, Gobert. painted the base and the rest of the cart yesterday. Today was a few touch-ups and the crew. There still are a few touchups I have already seen in the pictures, but I'm too exhausted to do it tonight.
I planned originally to put all of my Skaven on a similar sewer base. But, then I bought some used models on ebay. Now I have two more warp lightning cannons, two doomwheels, nine Stormfiends, A Grey Seer on the great bell, a regular Grey Seer, 3 Warlock Bombadiers, 40 Plague monks and 80 clan rats. Plus a Verminlord Warpseer and another unbuilt verminlord that will arrive in the next couple of days.
That's 138 bases left to make, and I think already over 3,000 points. Much is not built, and none of it is painted, save for the one warp cannon.
Plus, I want to convert some of the Skyre Acolytes, since the actual models are $15 a piece. having one of the plague furnace that is the other conversion option from the bell cart wouldn't hurt, and another 40 plague monks would also be nice. Buying another of the start collecting Pestilens boxes is the best financial deal, but still an investment.
I'll probably do some form of a similar base, but it will have to be simplified. Maybe I'll get a GS roller to help with the cobblestone. This hand-crafting individual stones has to go.
I didn't know what the globe thing on the back of the cannon was, but I kind of thought it looked like a still, for the production of home brew alcohol. In this case, however, I'm seeing it as s distillation of a warp-fluid by product of running the cannon. Capture that fluid and you've got a batch of Warp Juice. If you live through the battle, you'll be able to get . Waste not, want not, right? Or in this case: waste not, get wasted.

What a great piece, really happy you got the extension. That should net you quite a few votes! Love all the work on the details, the base is superb (nice OSL) and the colors of the cannon contrast nicely with the rustic cart.

Really nice work on your store piece DJ. The shelving units look just perfect inside of it, looking forward to seeing more progress on it.
The lightning cannon looks great too, I like the subtle reflection of the wyrdstone tip on that metal lightning bolt thing above it. That base and OSL are excellent too, it makes me morbidly curious of what such a foul looking sewer would smell like.

Great job on the warp cannon/still! The still bottle looks great, well done on getting the fluid right and even more well done on the hearty bye product idea

Trying hectically to get this done. I keep thinking of cool details and then I add them in. I need to probably just go with what I've got. But here is the latest addition:
A front door, complete with door hardware.
And some shots of various angles with some paint.

Some phone shots of the store. i need to make a sign for front with the name of the store, and a cash register. I added some graffiti. MacPhail, your name was the first I was going to paint, but since you were judging the competition last round, it seemed like it would be in poor taste. I also painted a bloody handprint on the inside of the window. Don't go in there!
Some newspapers blown around everywhere. A few tufts growing up through the cracks in the sidewalk.
It needs some more graffiti tags, and then to take some real pictures.

Wow! I'm honored and super impressed. So many excellent little details... the handprint, the advertisements, scattered trash. When I saw that door chain my brain filled in the rattle-chime of the door on the Tipsy Fox liquor store from when I was a kid. That dumpster is fabulous... great rust effects there. I can't wait to see the finished photos!
I'm excited for your Skaven project too... That's a massive collection you've picked up there. I owe your thread a thorough going-over for all the cool stuff you've got going.

The weathering and signage on the dumpster is fantastic. Even zoomed way in, the detail looks great. Normally, my terrain is just a quick drybrush job but you have poured so much time and love into all of this scenery. The decal work is impressive. I love the bloody hand.

My LoER entry is done. It was a really fun project. I'm pleased with how it came out.
I give you: "Roadside Convenience"
The name is a nod to the book, Roadside Picnic, that was the basis/inspiration for the game, Zona Alpha, for which the build is mainly intended. It could be used in any post-apocalyptic setting, however.
The roof is removable so the interior is playable.
Wide shots of all four sides: (spoilered because they are perhaps not so interesting, but included to show the big picture)
One of the themes of the LoER competition is detail. Here are some shots of some crafting details I put into it.
Storeroom door, complete with doorknob and hinges. Knob is a little connecting bit of a toy, the hinges are matchbox car axles and card stock.
Water shutoff access. The pipes are cotton swabs, the handle is cardboard and the latch to release the cover is also cut out and fashioned from card. A wip shot is available earlier in the blog.
Here is a shot up at the ruined ceiling. You can see rivets on the support beams, as well as small holes punched to make the frame for the ceiling tiles.
The dumpster has hinges cut out of card stock and wrapped around a cotton swab.
A rusty vent cover and some posters make for interesting detail on the interior walls.
Someone seems to have already made off with the cash register, but they left behind a stack of receipts.
And, you can't have a collapsed roof without having some rubble on the floor.
You can see it best on the shelf through the window, but I crafted supports for each of the shelves.
Bricks showing through the wall, and this neat little dumpster.
I also included minute details while painting:
As illustration of the point that you can't ever have anything nice, without someone coming along to mess it up: some knuckle heads came along and sprayed graffiti all over it.
Several little trickles of paint running down the wall.
Dirt, dust, rocks, etc. around on the ground. Newspaper pages have blown all over. Tufts of wild grasses push up between cracks in the pavement.
A bloody hand print on the front window.
There are also some thematic elements for the game. What sort of post-apocalyptic store would have nothing for interested parties to salvage?
A flashlight (torch) on one shelf.
Crowbars always come in handy. They can also be used pretty effectively as melee weapons.
A nice bucket is a good find.
And look at that: the liquid gold of the wasteland, gasoline!
The register may be gone, but paper money is all but useless anyway. Taking that was a rookie move. What else might the amateurs have left behind?
And now an unpainted Mr. Spock will demonstrate scale. He's a 32mm figure.
(also of note, the chain and handle on the front door. This is apparently the only picture that turned out of them.)
He's a bit fuzzy in this one, but a good shot of the dumpster:
Thank you to everyone for all the support and feedback along the way. It was instrumental in keeping me pushing through this thing.

The amount of detail you have included- and the inspired scratchbuilding that went into them- is the very essence of the LoER. Very well done project, not least for having gotten to the 'completed' phase!
Dr. H explained one time that each scene should tell a story and that everything in the scene has its part, essentially a smaller story in the greater one. Thanks very much for your guided tour of this facility, with its _many_ stories, as one would expect.
Using names as part of the graffiti is a nice touch as well. Quite some time ago Camkhieri built a marvelous UnderHive diorama and utilized a fair amount of graffiti in the same manner.
A great scenic and gaming piece.
