Something that amazes me are trade/sale listings that go something like this:

1 box of tactical space marines (NOS) contains 10 space marines, decals, bases and all models still on sprue.
Retails for $150 willing to let go for only $60

Really? You're willing to sell at more than actual retail because you think people are too stupid/lazy to look that up (box actually retails for ~$38)?
Not an earth-shattering, global problem but annoying and puzzling all the same.

Just look through the listings and see where folks have about 1/4 - 1/2 in actual retail items listed but quote them at very inflated prices.

Maybe it was 10 boxes and they left out the "0"?

There was once a time when ebay was a place to go find great deals. Now its just another big store. I think they rely on people that just go to ebay now days looking for a gift or something, not really knowing what they are getting.

Your little cousin says he wants a Space Marine Tactical Squad, so you fire up ebay, find a listing that says:

"1 box of tactical space marines (NOS) contains 10 space marines, decals, bases and all models still on sprue.
Retails for $150 willing to let go for only $60"

And if you dont really know what your buying you think to urself wow, I just got a great deal.

Good point. I'm actually talking about Dakka's trade forum, though. Obviously, a very high percentage of Dakka-ites know what retail for GW stuff is. I just don't get the attempts at pulling the wool over.

Up in your base, killin' all your doods.

Well, a lot of online retailers will sell something for lower than retail, but say the retail is higher than it actually is to make it seem like your getting a better deal, so it can happen more often than you might think.

Can anyone furnish links to these Dakka ads?
I've never seen anything like that in the Swap Shop.

I've mostly seen this on Feebay. The real ones to look out for as those that are listed below retail but have exorbitant $15, $20 or more in shipping charges added.

Last time I checked, sending items US priority mail ran around $5 to $6 which would hold about a standard unit box of SM or IG units (typical infantry size - not tanks or large vehicles). And the post office provides the boxes and tape to pack the items!

As with all business, especially in trades or ebay and even on Dakka, Caveat emptor!

Never seen on Dakka or on ebay.

Next time you're looking through Dakka trade/sale ads that mention retail price, run a quick check and see if many of these ads don't pad.

I gave the SM tac squad as a simple (not real world) example. People will list 3 or 4 squad box equivalents plus a typical tank and say things like $250 or $300 retail. When you check it's maybe $180 ($105 for the 3 infantry units plus $50 or so for a tank).

Again, just in general, there are several folks who pad their retail going rate reference likely in hopes of people thinking they're getting a better deal.

I don't even think Australians are dumb enough to fall for something like this. But maybe your experiences differ.

Also, isn't it illegal for a business to claim retail is higher than it is when having a sale or discount on an item?
I am pretty sure it is, but I could be wrong.

????

Its a valid tactic to a give the buyer an idea of what they could be paying buying 'new'. If someone is happy with purchasing then what's the problem?

Honestly, I haven't really witnessed this myself.

The only times I've seen any discrepancies with prices has been if someone valued some "pro-painted" models above the MSRP.

If you could provide links to specific instances, it would be helpful.

The problem is that (the OP contends) that some posters are not being accurate about what the cost to buy "new" would be, thereby misleading the potential purchaser as to what the actual value of the items in question.

Australians use the dollar, but the Australian Dollar has less value than the American dollar. meaning their prices and retail will be higher.

This one, plus as I understand, they have an additional 20% or so tacked on on top of the elevated price.

It can be illegal to raise the price of an item just to place it "On Sale". Also Sales by definition must be limited time. Meaning you can not claim somethings price is $100 but offer an everyday sale that make sit $90. But this does not apply to every situation nor state. Just a general guideline.
