I only have paints right now. How can you paint a convincing rust effect without those rusting powders ad whatever

Hmmm. Well before rusting powders people painted on rust.

I use vermin brown, and fiery orange to make rust. It's not as good as rust pigmenting though

Yeah, you can paint on rust. All you need to do is mix together a sufficiently rusty color and apply it.

I painted all the rusted metal on my Death Guard in the following manner.

Basecoat of Dark Flesh
Drybrush of Boltgun metal
Wash Chestnut ink
Drybrush of Blazing Orange/Dark Flesh mix (waterd down)
Highlights with BoltGun Metal.
very Waterd down wash of Chestnut ink

It works well for me.

Pigments are about the same price as paints but last a lot longer. Why don't you order some? You'll be glad you did as you'll get better looking results with less effort.

I don't know if this will help but i actually got a good rust look to some of my space marines by leaving them in a tin coffee can that wasn't completely dry. I was stripping some of my SM and left them in the can to dry but the lid got put on my accident so it trapped the water and then transferred the rust look to my models. I have since painted over the models and no pictures were taken but it did give the rusty look.

I have always followed this.

paint in boltgun metal

paint blotches of 2 parts boltgun metal 1 part tin bitz 1 part water

Dry brush surrounding area of blotches with tin bitz

finish in badab black

Gives a decent weathered look, and looks like paint has flecked off.

I found some paint at my local Micheals craft store that had Iron particles suspended in it. They also sold a "rusting agent". I think with the crap brush I bought to do it with, it cost me maybe five dollars. So you paint on the iron paint, then after it dries, paint on the rusting agent. It gives you actual rust instead of a painted effect. Here's a shot of it, sorry it fuzzy. If anyone is interested, I can post better pics later.

The building in the background was rusted in the same way, just a clearer shot.

Lots of good advice for the color of rust, so I'll add something for the texture: if you dab a wee bit of super glue onto a spot, you'll get a nice bit of bumpy texture that you can then paint over with the rust color. It'll give a nice impression of oxidized metal that's been breaking down a little bit.

My Land Raider has a little bit of this done accidentally on the patch of armor in front of the near sponson, and near the bolts on the side of the dozer blade. You can see where my being sloppy with glue happily provided some nice texture for rust.

Dunno if this helps but with this trukk, If i remember correctly, I just undercoated black, then drybrushed silver, then drybrushed brown.

I've never had a problem getting a rusty effect. I don't know why so many people have a problem with it.

I use some "delta-ceramcoat" brown with about 6 parts water and 1 part paint. The paint is already thin, so it goes with water great. Just feather it on, there ya go.

I get results almost better than the Trukk above.

If I'm feeling lazy, I'll just dip the brush in straight paint and drybrush it on. Looks great, costs 60 cents and works great for batch shading on terrain (like the crashed aquila lander)

Instead of pigment I already used real rust. Use iron whool (I think it is the correct translation of this stuff used for sanding in DIY shops) and put some into water few days.
Smash it, and you will get real rust powder that can be applied quite easily

LOL^ I've done this same thing. Except I used a slinky I threw in a cup of water.

A super easy way, is to base the metal part in black. Then heavy drybrush with boltgun metal (or silver if you want brighter metal) Then I simply just cover the part with blazing orange, and immediately wipe off most of the orange with my finger. Ive recently been stippling red here and there, it gives it a bit more pizzazz but either method works nicely. Heres a few pics

And a vehicle. This is basically the same orange style, but on vehicles I add some black wash on edges and rivets and the like

It looks great on the wagon, but it looks more like dust on the Nob. Still looks great though!

Actually, the pigment I use is iron oxide, just I'm paying $4 for someone to give me a whole pot of it already prepared.

One of the benefits of pigments (or real rust) is that rather than just coloration you also get texture. Mix some into some thinners as a wash (make sure the previous coat is totally dry) to fill into gaps, the sprinkle some dry powder over the top. Make sure to seal it carefully or you can air blast your nice textures off.

Yeah, I agree with the texture fact.
It gives a rusty look, but, i think It is better to use it for big pieces as vehicles than for human scale figure. The texture is too rough for a rusty armor.
But, perhaps the pigment you use are finer than my home made one

How I do rust without pigments or weather powders is this.

Base coat of Dark Brown such as Scorched Brown, next a stippling of Dark Flesh, then a light stippling of Blazing Orange. Then if you want some metal showing through then a light drybrush of Boltgun on the area. That is all.
Here is a picture of how my paint only rust looks like.

This was a early test on my Adepticon Force so the flesh is darker now. The rust came through wonderfully. I drybrushed the green color up from the rust to the edges of the paint looks like the rust is bleeding through.

Ew, those don't even look real. They look like someone took a lump of chewed up fish and spat onto your Rhino.

No,just kidding. It looks good.

Well, that is what I thought after I took that picture. THe first thing I thought was that my Rhino looked like an akward, pizza faced 16 year old. They came out better when I repainted the flesh and went with a more Devlin Mud and Rotting Flesh Highlight. This is what it looked like after I fixed it.
