Hey, just picked up the Ruins of Osgiliath for WoTR.

Chunky durable ruin set. Interesting note was the box has a Made In China sticker.

There are no GW markings on the sprues, only a small NLP stamp on the bottom of the statues.

The statues were slide molded as well.

Hint of things to come?

Certain LotR stuff won't have GW or Citadel on it, as the design itself is owned by New Line (the NLP).

Slide moulding is also used in other kits (not to the same degree I'll grant you)

As for the made in china, can't say I knew that before!

Doesn't surprise me. They've been slowly producing or sourcing more and more of their books and hobby lines in China for some time now. I think they'll get to the point very soon where everything not specifically a miniature will be made in China...

What is "slide molding"?

It's a type of injection moulding that allows for moving parts on the mould. As I understand it, it can be used either to cast in multiple layers (inject the first layer of plastic, slide the mould to the next casting position, inject the next layer, rinse and repeat... particularly handy for casting pre-coloured pieces from dyed plastics) or for casting pieces with undercuts... for example, hollow gun barrels can be cast in one piece through the use of a round sliding pin that runs down the middle of the barrel for casting, and then pulls out to allow the piece to be removed from the mould.

Yep. The 2 statues in the set are one piece. They have a cavity inside from the slide mold.

I was just surprised that it was an actual miniature item that was MiC.

And I would swear this was the first thing from LotR that I have bought that didn't have GW or New Line on the sprue itself

What really got me was the sticker, which tells me that they printed the box with the flexiblity to make it wherever.

The last thing I remember that wasn't made in USA or UK was the resin barricades.

I think all their plastic moulding is done in China, or atleast most of it.

They stopped using Renendra years ago.

Its why if you have a mispack you get a whole new box. Cheaper to do that than have 'spares' sitting around.

They have done all their plastics in the UK or in the Memphis, TN, USA facility. Been that way for years. This seems among the first steps away from that.

As for the mispack thing, the total replace has been their method since at least the early 90s when I started buyin their stuff.

just happened to me.. got a necron battleforce that was missing a few green rod sprues, they don't have the sprues separate anymore, so they sent me a free box of warriors. Now I'll have all the rods I need for the battleforce, and some extra bodies that I can use to convert stuff might try and make plastic flayed ones

And as far as stuff being made in china.. just get used to it. everything is. As long as you don't try to eat it you should be fine those chinese folks love to put lead in everything

There are two other famous products done in China by GW (apart from the paints):

1.) The famous rigid grass board that was rejected due to quality issues.
2.) The new "super cheap" modular gaming board that nearly doubled its price between newsletter announcement and release date.

Seems like GW always gets ripped off when dealing with Chinese companies
And it never gets cheaper for the customer.

No different.

*gasps*

Sucks for Apple, who are surely getting ripped off.

If they can make current gen and future generation electronics, plastics is childs play, seriously. lol.

There's nothing new or unique about that. Honoured Imperium is also made in China, so is the Temple Of Skulls, so are the figure cases and army cases and on and on.

GW doesn't get ripped off. GW specs the lowest quality for the lowest cost, then attempt to sell to the customer at GW price.

Apparently, GW learned that not even their customers will pay Rolls Royce money for Yugo quality.

Chinese companies? Maybe on some things, but there is a "GW Shanghai" so it would appear that GW owns and operates its own facility of some sort in China.

I am talking about the modular board and the "Here, they are ready to ship, now we want 50% more than the agreed price or we keep them." thing, which is rumoured to be the cause of the last mnute price hike.
And you pay Rolls Royce money for the board.

From what I hear about the RoB board was that it had to be remolded and have what you see now under it with the re-enforcing structure because the first batch came though warped and a little 2 flexible. The factory in china is for games workshop to move production of non miniature sprues, also some forgeworld is cast over there and shipped back to the uk.

The battleboard is more than I'd spend, but IIRC, it was all speculation. More likely, GW saw so much preorder, they decided to soak the players on these one-time buys with a pre-release price increase.
