I had a good laugh at this:

http://www.ospreypublishing.com/blog/zombies_attack_Osprey_offices/

Osprey is known for publishing military resource books. Any time period you can imagine, any nation, they've got a book with clear, detailed paintings that are considered the pinnacle of resource materials for hobbyists.

I hope they get the zombie epaulets right, and the correct number of buttons

A little late to the whole zombie fad, but that's pretty entertaining.

Oh my... clearly you're not referring to us as 'Johnny Come Lately' Zombie afficionados? I'll have you know some fans of the Z genre have been going strong since the sixties!

Those Max Brooks fans think the genre was just created sometime in 2001....

Heya Ash!

Deadworld, lol! That was a twisted little comic. I saw a new series with King Zombie in a comic shop a couple of years ago, and now regret not picking it up to see if they completed their original storyline. I loved that someone kept the supernatural in a zombie tale, rather than the modern scientific or "mysterious" explanation for the dead rising. Survival stories can run thin after a while, especially with the average zombie tale's attrition rate, so it was exciting to have a real plot to support the gore.

And those four-armed, eyeless she-zombies were the bee's knees...

As was the Zombie Killer with his spike hand and bad-ass ponytail.

If you haven't already; check out a book called Dead B**** Army. Very cool zom novel and not the 'typical' plague/meteor/etc. fare.

Operation Threadcromantic Zombie is a-go.

Now that that's out of the way, the book is up for preorder. I reccomend taking the time to click the link and read, it's fairly funny. For those too lazy, here's the table of contents.

• Introduction 4
• Necromantic Zombies 6
• Voodoo Zombies 14
• Nazi Zombies 20
• Revenants 25
• Atomic Zombies 33

I'm definitely interested in this just for my love of all things zombies, but I guess I'm a bit confused on what exactly is in the book.

The OP mentioned they make hobby resource books, but the description of the book reads more like a Zombie Survival Guide, or history of zombies type book. A bit of both? Can anyone enlighten as I'm unfamiliar with Osprey books, but this looks like it would be right up my alley.

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games

Osprey is a company that makes very historically accurate books that are often used by historical players because of their color schemes/accuracy/general coolness. Therefore, they decided to spread the truth about zombies that The Man doesn't want you to know Part of Osprey apparently thought it would be fun do do guides for fictional things. Thus, we have what is basically their version of the Zombie Survival Guide.

This is completely ridiculous in the best possible way. I missed this thread the first time around, so thanks for the necro.

I'm surprised Osprey is going fictional, honestly. I know historical reenactors (especially the occasionally less than rigorous in research Marklanders and SCAdians ) who have based the entirety of their gear on Osprey books, both hard and soft kit. I wonder if this is a one-off or if they'll continue in this vein...

This is them testing the waters. They said that if it does well, they're going to do other fictional monsters like Vampires, Werewolves, etc.

If they were doing it to cash in on Twilight, Osprey isn't the right market for it.

They'd be doing things like Hexwolves, Vampyres, the "classical" myths. Stuff like that.

I was kidding, I've never been into vampires and werewolves (Underworld was good though) too much, zombies much more.

Seeing the price of this book makes me understand how much more we pay than regular hobbyists.

This book might be be a good reason to buy some Bolt Action germans.

This book is on the "cheap" side for Osprey. It's going to be a few dozen things of 'plates' done by one of their artists, some small write-ups(probably a paragraph or so each).

Their quality stuff is over $35, and that's with a 25% discount.

Osprey books tend to have rules for what size of battles,
Is it more skirmish style with 10-20 models or army vs army?

But GW's cheap stuff is higher and their quality stuff is much higher http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Armour_Books
But this thread is not there for defending nor bashing GW, so let's not keep derailing it.

I've yet to see an Osprey book with rules in it.

Because they don't make rulebooks for wargaming.
They make resource books that detail forces, mainly focusing on uniforms, training, insignias, etc.

And as an aside, since you're pointing out Imperial Armour books(which I own all of, barring IA:2)...the Imperial Armour books(which are exclusively hardback, versus Osprey's paperback majority) are almost 4-5x the size of the average Osprey resource books, featuring color spreads versus drawn plates and a selection of color/black+white photos.
Production values are different, which is where the price difference comes from.

They are publishing a set of modern rules - Ambush Alley. Pretty sure it is due to hit in Spring 2011.

Cheap side? Their Men-At-Arms and many of their other series books run about the same price, $17.95-$19.95 US. That's hundreds of Osprey books in that price range, including the new zombie book. It's the larger resource books that are more expensive.

Most of Osprey's books are resources for historically minded people.
They are widely used for gaming as painting/modelling guides and some as organizational guides.
They also make some books that are purely modelling guides.

In addition, in partnership with Slytherine games, they created Field of Glory. This is a historical game at the army level.
Mostly Osprey's contribution to the game seems to be in production values and art assets.
The rules writers are employed by Slytherine.

The FoG books cannot easily be confused with regular Osprey books.
They have a brown cover, and a large FoG badge on the cover.
They are mostly army lists with a few color pictures for each army.

Yes, they are. My first exposure to them was decades ago. Our Civil War reenactment group used them for fun and as a resource for getting our uniforms accurate. The Men-At-Arms, Warrior and other series are great for getting a narrow focus look at one particular type of soldier in a specific, brief period of history.

Good to know that they are publishing some smaller companies' rule systems though.

Honestly I had no idea that Osprey had any connection to a set of gaming rules. I've known about them for over 30 years as the "go-to" source for military uniforms, no matter the historical period or nation.
