Sounds like the same kind of attraction as shark fin soup: I had a few dollars lying around and decided I'd try some exotic food for a change.

What's wrong with this? I live near Czimer's (the butcher's store where the meat came from), and I don't have any issue with it. It's not endangered, so what is worse about eating lion than eating cow?

It's people. Burrito Supremes are made out of people. They're making our burritos out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for burritos. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!

While the African lion is not considered endangered by U.S. regulators, it is classified as "threatened" by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, an international protection agreement.

Czimer's exotic-meat dealings have landed him in hot water before. Back in 2003, Chicago newspapers covered his conviction and six-month prison sentence for selling meat from federally protected tigers and leopards. Czimer admitted to purchasing the carcasses of 16 tigers, four lions, two mountain lions and one liger -- a tiger-lion hybrid -- which were skinned, butchered and sold as "lion meat," for a profit of more than $38,000.

Prettymuch covers it.

Tigers are most certainly on the brink of extinction.

Lions are taking a massive hit in Africa during the last decade.

This gimmick is repellent.

The land of cotton.

But they are delicious, tasty people once the Taco Bell seasoning hits the meat.

I have to agree with the OP, this is utter bollocks, theres plenty of good meat to be found in non-endangered/threatened animals.

They should skin him and make some Czimer burgers to serve to lions

Heh. Frazzled gives a whole new idea to "mexican" food. Thats one bad bad net to fall in. I wouldn't mind trying some wild game as long as it didn't taste like deer. I love deer meat but if I'm gonna pay a premium it has to taste special.

The greater good needs some moo.

I don't have any problem with people eating animals, and no one animal is "nicer" than any other. If people want to eat lions, that's fine with me...

The issue of species endangerment is relevant, tho. But that's not about eating them, so much as killing them. If you're killing lions illegally, that's bad. Otherwise, pass a law. If they're actually breeding and raising lions somewhere, then killing them is not a problem, IMO. You made it, you killed it, zero population impact. On the contrary, most likely the business of "lion farming" will either grow or fail. So you're probably expanding the lion population.

It's legal. So...where's the problem? A lion sure wouldn't have any moral qualms about eating me...nor is a lion likely to do anything FOR me. Sorry, but I feel that animals should earn their keep. Working animals aren't cool to eat (horses, donkeys) and sure, I can even get on board with not eating endangered animals. (Unless you set up a farm specifically for that purpose, in which case, sign me up for a meat shipment.) I will even put them on the 'don't eat me list' if they are capable of entertaining me. (Trained seals, other performing animals, etc.)

Sorry, I like animals, but at the end of the day, I don't have any compunctions about eating them. I wish I lived in Arizona so I could get down on one of those burgers. Lion probably does NOT taste like gak. I know for a fact that mountain lion is delicious. I can only imagine what African lion would taste like.

Also, as an unrelated side note, I think that restaraunt owner is a classy guy, offering refreshments to the protesters.

Your arrogance is boggling, an animal has to perform a service of some kind to be permitted to live?

Feth it, you're going on the ignore list.

The mind boggles.

Pointless gimmick for stuffing your face.
The picture of the burger thing looks llike summat a squigg would turn its nose up at.

Nothing but a total lack of respect for the animal.
The scummy gakks have also Tiger carcasses.

Not to mention the disgusting waste of resources necessary to rear an apex predator as food.

So many acres of land for grazing for cattle, so many cattle per year to raise the lion... so that a few bits of it can end up in a burger. Veggies rail me for eating a herbivore but to eat a predator like that is truly wasteful and morally bankrupt.

Whilst billions go hungry across the planet.

I see lion no different then i see cows or pigs. They are all animals with intelligence.

I have accepted the fact that im too weak willed to give up meat , so in a way i still feel sorry for eating all animals.
But i just dont feel particularly sorry just for lions when compared to pig or cow.

What I don't get is why would anyone want to eat Lion meat? Endangered or not I cant see it being very tasty. Most meat that we consume is bred for the purpose of eating and that alone, therefor it is overfed and underexercised, this produces a softer meat as the muscles are not being worked. This is why we don't eat horses and why a lot of people complain that organic/free range meats are tough and stringy.

Eating Lion (or any other large cats) meat just seems stupid and pointless, the only reason people will eat it is so they can brag to others, sad really.

As for the coment about animals earning their keep, do you take the same veiw with people as well? As far as I can see a Lion (and many other large predatory cats) bring happiness to many paople just by existing. Can you say the same of yourself or should I call the butchers and tell them we have some "longpig" going cheap?

Lions are not a domesticated livestock Luna.
That is the difference. There is no necessity for eating lions other than some sort of macho frisson to say you have chowed down on the King of the Jungle.

As a vegetarian I don't have an issue with others eating meat. That doesn't mean to say we can't treat livestock with respect and good husbandry.

Lions may not be endangered, yet, but tigers are.
As MGS has pointed out there is still concern for the lion populations.

I will say this. I used to be a Butcher. And when some young girls questioned my job choice I scoffed at them.

Other animals kill and eat other animals. Why should man be kinder then nature?

Because we have the capacity to do so, it is one of the things that makes us (well some of us) superior to the animals that we eat.

From the article:

The meat is the byproduct of a skinning operation owned by another man, Czimer said in an interview with CNNMoney.com. He declined to name that gentleman.

"This man buys and sells animals for the skin, and when I need something and he has ability to get it, I will bargain for the meat. It's a byproduct," he said.

It isn't like he's going out and killing lions for their meat. The meat exists on lions that are being killed for other reasons. Would you rather see that meat go to waste?

Man shouldn't be kinder than nature. But man should be more intelligent than nature. That means that when man kills an animal, for whatever reason, the most possible use should be made of that animal's passing.

erm and why are they being skinned exactly?

Where are they being sourced from?

They are being sold as meat from a lions bred for meat, but the carcass is the by-product of skinning. What the heck is going on?
