I've never fielded one, I'm thinking about trying one out soonish, tell me about your experiences with one, whether you're an ork player, or someone that's faced them before.

My brother used to play Orks, before he defected to IG, and would 99% of the time take a SAG. Granted, he's 15 and couldn't give a monkey's about the mathammer. Despite this, I think I've seen the most amount of double 6's someone can roll in a battle. That thing is nasty. I was probably unlucky, but from my experience, take it if you're an Ork!!

I haven't played in the latest edition, but I played Ork's in 2nd when they still had the SAG. Loved it. That thing wrecked whatever you fired it at.
Now being on the receiving end of it in this latest incarnation, I can say I've never seen it suceed. Always fail. And more often then not it deposits the mekboy within range of instant death of my bolters/shuriken catapults.

It's quite hard to accurately say how it'll perform, it's very fickle, i've only used it a few times (i borrowed it from a mate, as i don;t actually own one) and i've had it both blow up in the first turn, taking a few lootas with it and destroy the target with great effect every time i fired it!
It might not be a great choice competitevely (not that 'd know), because of its tendancy to misfire, taking a significant portion of your points with it but it is, however, very fun to play with, whatever the outcome! Its on my to-get-next-list for purely that reason .
So it's a must for fun games, though competitevely im not so sure...

First time I fired it I rolled double sixes. On a Leman russ in 4th ed. Then rolled a 6. The explosion was 6, killing most of his bubble wrap squad. Pretty great start.
The second most memorable was rolling double sixes with no scatter on a freshly deep striked deathwing squad with their special character attached... Yeah, he was rather upset about losing the heart of his army on turn 2. Esp since it was in a store tourney. The worst experience is when I had the opponent place it result and the opponent put it right over the top of my team mates squad of SoBs that got out of a rhino. It happened in that same tourney, same game.
Needless to say its a high risk high reward gun, but maybe you should leave it at home if you are playing a team game... Its not a big deal if some orks die, but when your teammates are playing with power armor... yeah, not the greatest thing.

If you're expecting to face an army full of heavy infantry (meq) then it'll be worth every point.
Against heavily mechanized armies it's ok.
Against swarms it's entertaining but not worth it.
I used it once and annihilated 8 possessed marines in one go.

I've run one for about 15 games or so & loved it. Never did much, but boy the feeling of rolling a pair of 6's makes it worth the wait.

I've had it do wonders against Eldar: wiped out a nasty combat squad, then a wraithlord (double 6). But I have also had it wipe out the mek and the unit he was sitting on an objective with.... Heck of a lot of fun, but can definitely end up costing more than just points

I <3 the SAG. In friendly games, I almost always run it. Removing Eldrad from the table with none of his silly shenanigans made every last second of building, painting and playing that guy totally worth it.
And then I rolled double 1's three games in a row, vaporizing my firebase. I stopped playing with it in competetive games after that :(

Terrible rules-writing no doubt, but given that you basically can't play it RAW in any kind of sensible way lets you know that it can't be right.

Perosnaly, I see the SAG as dead flash. So if you have a flash army of boyz. How can you not take it?
I'm a bit of a fluff player and despite any short comings it has its one of the most orky weps ever. It can demolish tanks / infantry / yourself or just launch you into close combat with a dreadnaught. More mek boy madness than you can shake a stick it.
So to sum up. Really fun wep, you have to try it out at least once!

Mekboy Hammerin' Somethin'

I have had very few instances where my SAG has actualy served me well on the battlefield but I'm always tempted to include one in the army list, It is an incredibly in character weapon its just so unpredictible and orky, yeah your painting a target on your head as soon as you pick it up, yeah your mekboy is probably going to go flying accross the battlefield instead of the snotlings, but maybe you'll get that illusive double and get the s10 shot on his command character.
I struggle not to include it sometimes I don't win that struggle and have fun!

well, when i use it either takes the whole opposing armies bullets until it is dead, allowing your boyz to close in, or takes out one squad with a double 6 and then blows itself up next turn. not really a tactical investment, but it is fun to play with

I've used it on several occasions. It's OK, since I typically don't roll well it turns out to be a low-medium powered template. This is OK because I typically run him with the lootas so they have the benefit of a nob while keeping the firing complimentary.

Remember, the AP is always 2. Orks don't have too many of those, and ap 2 large blasts are always fun against termies.
The only time I rolled double 6's I scattered off target . . .

I always take one and it is always hilarious. The AP 2 is invaluable for ork shooting. Give the mek an ammo runt, having a re-roll on your scatter when you get 8+ str is completely worth 3 pts.
Most of the time when I am playing a new opponent people ignore the SAG until he insta kills a special character or wipes out an entire honor guard squad.
Also I would not stick anything next to him other than maybe a small squad of grots. The first game I ever fielded one I stuck it next to my cannon batter and the first turn I rolled double ones. Just stick him in cover with good coverage of the field. Also always fire the SAG last in your shooting phase. The SAG can potentially hit your own troops (if your opponent gets to pick the target) which could kill off other shooting attacks. You could also launch the Mek at your target preventing additional people from shooting that target.

Irdiumstern, did you have an ammo grunt for the reroll?
Personally, I find that two SAG are better than one accompanied by a KFF big mek or warboss to average out the wackiness.
