Hi everybody! (hi dr. nick),

I have to base color 12 IG tanks with Dark Angels Green - and for that purpose I would most certainly like a spray. I have three roads I can venture at;
1) drop the spray - its bad for the environment anyway with all those cans. Youre best off using 10 hours extra painting em by hand
2) dont drop the spray, but go Citadel FTW and buy a spraygun - its so messy anyway, its just like a spray can.. and you get new stuff !
3) get a spray can that matches DAGreen from Army Painter.

Of all the three, i would have liked #2 the best, if it wasnt for the sucky quality and lack of precision of the paint gun - and besides, the price is the same as 2,5 cans from AP, and im guessing thats even without the propellant. #1 is the worst - i get no new stuff, not even stuff to use and throw away.

So #2 remains - but.. what color of AP is equivilant to what color Citadel? I know the color similarities is propably not something they really wanna advertise - but could someone in here point me to either a guide or a quick reference ?

You could also try your local DIY store.
B&Q in the UK does spray paints of all colours.
Unfortunately their website is utter pants.
There doesn't appear to be a green dark enough in the army painter range at the mo either.
Do you know anyone with an airbrush?

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Sadly I have noone in my immediate surroundings that have an airbrush. The price for airbrushes + compressor here in denmark is lunacy (around 90 euros for the cheapest starter-set) - but perhaps the best bet would be to actually buy one of the cheaper "starter sets" from the UK (seen from 39,99£, shipping not included). That would solve the "i need stuff"-crawing and the custom basecoat problem.

Correction: around 160 Euros in DK - not 90.

modern day spray cans are CFC free! It frustrates me that Army painter doesn't have their spray range in pots as well as that would alleviate the need to decide between getting things done fast and future repairs. DA green from GW and the dark green from army painter may not match perfectly, just so you know. Everybody slips up with a brush and having the shade in pot form would be brilliant.

I can recommend getting an airbrush and spraying that way. I did a bunch of warhammer buildings that way. very handy. Multiple thin coats, btw.

BTW I'm doing my Dark Angels in their original black colour - these guys are what got me in to 40K in the first place (back with issues 90 & 92) and I was most upset when they went green!

I can use them as Fallen - so using either the SM or the CSM codexes.

Hey there kristoffer, there are actually cheap (and good) alternatives to the mega expensive sets out there, even here in Denmark.

I don´t know what part of Denmark you´re in, but if you´re close to Copenhagen there´s a nice place near Nørreport that might have just what you´re looking for..

I´ve gotten my airbrush stuff from them, and it was waaaaay cheaper than the prices you mention.

Also, I believe army painter is in the process of designing their own line of paints, to match the sprays. Possible release time is this fall, around august or so, according to the guy who runs my FLGS.

i dont see any problems with the spray gun.

neither is it messy, nor uneven.just a matter of skill

its obviously not as precise as an airbrush, but it does what its supposed to be.

and i dont recommend getting a cheap airbrush, you will regret it

Weeeerll, I can´t say that I´ve been anything other than fully satisfied with mine, but ymmv of course.

For the record it´s a siphon feed airbrush, which is the only thing I´d change for my next one. Other than that, the spray patterns, precision and general functionality has been perfect.

So paying less may equal in a worse airbrush, but it may also mean that you pay for the airbrush, not the name and chrome plating... To each their own of course.

I'm yet to find a comparison. I spoke to the army painter guys a while back and they said they would work on one, but I've heard nothing since then.

The paints I do have are all slightly different to citadel tones but a fixing colour can usually be mixed up without too much trouble (or found in the Vallejo Model Color range).

Just as an aside, here's a trick to having your spray shade in pot form:

Take your spray can, a bendy straw, some saran wrap, and an empty glass jar.
1)Put the saran wrap(sandwich wrap, whatever you want to call it. Thin, see-through clingplastic used for food storage) over the top of the jar.
2)Cut a small hole for the straw to fit in.
3)Take a rubber band or scotch tape to secure the wrap in place.

Now, this last bit is VERY IMPORTANT TO DO IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA:
4) Fit the nozzle to the end of the straw. Spray two or three quick bursts in. Give it an hour or so outside, with just the saran wrap and straw on it.

Voila. You've successfully decanted your spray into a format you can store for about a week or two(give or take, depending on the brand, etc) to do touch-up work. You apply it as normal paint afterwards and enjoy!

Thank you sir, a good trick. Cheers.

I live in Copenhagen yes - but I cant recall any place around Nørreport that sells airbrushes, besides the hobby store in the basement (and i do believe their price for airbrush + compressor is the same as everywhere else?)
And if it is the one in the basement - they should L2MakeWebpages :-)

Anyway, i just ordered an airbrush+compressor from the UK, 80 Pounds incl. delivery - its prob. not a good compressor nor airbrush, but it will be enough for me to have basic information for a comparison.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And for the record, i tried the GW Spray gun - its horrible. Its probably not the gun itself, more likely its the propellant can that they recommend (the overpriced Citadel can). I suppose whenever I get a compressor it will work just fine.

Heheh, yup that´s the one. And their website is indeed mucho ugly.

What I did at first, was get a beginners set, with compressed air. It was pretty poor, but good for finding out if it was something I wanted to try for real. After that I slowly built up my airbrushing gear, but actually didn´t buy their compressor since it was too expensive.

This summer, I´ll be testing a suggestion that I got from a fellow dakkite.
I´ll be making a compressed air tank, and taking that to the gas station for refill. Almost no cost, totally quiet, and air for hours on end.
Or so I was told.

The nozzle on the GW spray gun is supposedly poor quality...
But please keep us posted on what you find out, I´d love to see your results.

army painter greenskin is an exact match for snot green color.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.
