Hey guys just a quick one here. I plan on making a pretty simple board that will be 4'x4' (no room for a 6fter, suppliment when i feel like it). anyway I was wondering what the point level max should be around. Since usually 2000 pts. is played on a 6'x4' board and 4'x4' is 2/3 of that is it a safe assumption to play with 1320 pts. as a level? Rounding up say 1500 pts. tops on this particular board size? I know i can play whatever I want but just for congestion purposes.

I'd personally cap a 4x4 board at 1500, but even that is pushing it IMO

i'd prefer to do 500-1000 pt skirmishes instead

500-1000pts.

No more. You'd be pushing gak uphill to fit more on a 4x4 and ranges would suffer.

At my club, we mainly use our 4x4s for combat patrol level games or skirmish level other games (like necromunda).

500-1000, and even that's pushing it. As one very wise member paraphrased (I really wish I could remember who to attribute this to), if you're feeling like the game is two kids crashing cars together, you're doing it wrong.

Seriously - I have a 6x4 board that feels like it's a cage match and usually play 1500+ on a 8x4 board that is only just starting to feel right. The best board imo is an 8x8 w/ a 2ft deployment zone, but that might be my spoiled american self.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right.

+1 for 500 to 750.

1000 is pushing it.

Way too small for anything larger.

Due to space constraints at the time, my Wife and I have played a 1500 point game, Guard vs her Orks. It was a bloodbath on both sides. Pretty sure she won that one.

Safely and realistically, I would say depending on what armies are involved. I WOULD NOT recommend the Orks vs Guard again, though it was fun. 1000 points would be tops for most games I would think.

Thorian Enclave Inquisitorial Guard - 6000points
Grey Knights - 4000pts
Divine Crusaders - 5000pts
Order of the Argent Shroud - 3500pts
Kabal of the Black Heart - 3000pts
Wife's Deathskulls - 4000pts

I play 2000 points on a 4x4 table more often than not and to be honest it takes away from the game. There is never enough space to maneuver. I play shooty marines and it is always a difficult game against CC oriented marines or Nids.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

Who wants to know?

I play apoc Tau allied with guard on a TABLE TENNIS table, dont know exact dimensions but I do know it's VERY FUNNY given that I play CC CSM and NIDS most of the time, shooty DA aren't so fun.

General suggestion in the Apocalypse book is that you need 1 square foot of table space per 100 points on a side. So a 4x4 board would be able to support up to 1,600 points per side.

Like others though, I think that sounds a little high for a 4 foot board. Depending on the mission and how much starts in reserve or whatnot, it could work. Still, I generally play on a 6x4 or 8x4 board for anything over 1,000 points and under 3,000 points per side.

I would say 1,000 points max unless you want a fairly dense game without a lot of tactical manoeuvring.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

1000 points is as big as I'd go, and even then you probably shouldn't go that big with horde armies like Guard or Orks. 750 would be the most comfortable points level.

That's for Apocalypse, though, where a lot of your force will likely be in Reserve, troops can be packed in a little more, and everything dies faster.

For regular games, a good rule of thumb is to allow 2' of table for every 500 points. That was what GW suggested back in 2nd edition. 3rd and subsequent editions have made armies larger for fewer points, which makes that guideline result in slightly more packed in battles, but not game-breakingly so.

I'd say 500 points, but I'll add that I consistently prefer to play on larger the average tables (which is why my home setup is 8x5).

I find anything over 1500 constrained on 6x4 as well, but adding depth becomes more important the extra length quite quickly other wise you end up with underplayed end zones in practice (as one player deploys smaller and the other player reacts accordingly).

Thanks guys! Yeah the most that would be played would be 1500 and that is gonna just be a grinder I think. So I will probably end up just using 1000pts. if I make it. Be good for quick games at home. I appreciate it.

In fact, I have such a board at home.
Here, 1000 pt games are appropriate,
while at the 1500 pt level you will recognize some concentration of units.
