Subject: *HELP* Methods to recover mini's from a sealer disaster? SOLUTION CONFIRMED: RE-SPRAY W/GLOSS SEALER

Frosted Sealer.... Any methods to rectify this disaster? I heard somewhere applying another coat of sealer sometimes helps.... Anything else? Am pretty desperate, lost a very, very significant amount of work due to this bullsh*t. Never, ever touching GW sealer again.
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope....

Nope, nice hot sunny day, nice breeze though not too humid...
Have this going in my home p and m thread too, but I wanted to adress it specifically in it's own thread too just to broaden the base. - here is the paste with specifics about the conditions etc -
Here is what I am dealing with... did some experiments with water to see if the sealer became clearer when wet... no luck, I am losing hope here... Some are worse than others, but they are all effed... Lost so much of the highlights and transitions.
Worst part is, I had them sealed properly and clearly with a Satin Krylon, I decided to be extra cautious and seal again with matte as these guys would be touched while playing... Even took the precaution of sealing a test mini first, which went fine. Somehow, half an hour later, something changed and this happend... The only thing I can think of is maybe to heat them in hopes it will smooth out???
:S :S :S

Sometimes a VERY thin brushnig of nail polish remover will help to dissolve sealer and "re-seal" the mini. Test this on a small and nonsignificant part before doing the whole mini though as it is a very risky procedure.

Ok, I've found a layer of Johnson Pledge Multi surface wax floor polish (which i normally use to dilute inks) takes away a lot i.e 80% (but not all sadly) of the frostyness. Maybe a few coats would be better, i stopped at 2 as they looked normal again.
I was trying to fix two Eldar Grav tanks and its worked really well. Automatically Appended Next Post: Nice minis by the way. I bet you were as gutted as me, its looks like you put some hard work into them.

I seem to remember seeing in a thread somewhere around here that a layer of clear gloss will remove the frosting effect. Then you can re-spray with matte coat.
And yes, the GW 'matte' coat is pretty poor. It's a semi-gloss at best. Go with Testor's Dullcoat. It's a true flat finish.

there was a thread here on dakka IIRC in which someone suggested spraying zip kicker glue accelerator as a partial solution to getting rid of the frosting. he posted pics and the stuff worked mostly; it didn't get it back to pre-dull coat finish but got rid of most of the frosting. if you try that, post some pics too.
*edit* i found some of the threads from the past and put the links below. that really sucks as you did a great job with the minis (i was following your thread in P&M). keep us informed how it goes. also, porkuslime (one of the OPs in a link below) is a frequent poster here so you can PM him for more info/tips.

Sorry man I know this sucks. The same has happened to me a few times. It usually happens more often due to humidity than heat. I have found that a few thin layer of gloss will clear it up. I wait for each coat to completely dry. When done I use the matte. For matte I almost always use testors dullcoat. I have found it to be the best at removing any gloss effects.

First mistake: Using GW ANYTHING spray. All I stick to these days are Foundation washes and paints. $14 is way too much for a can of spray anything.
2nd mistake: Not using Krylon brand clear. Buy it, use it, never look back. End of story. Forget any other clear coat on the market exists. Especially GW clears.
For making those 2 mistakes though shalt write 10,000 times "I will heed the advice of Fateweaver." Make sure to capitalize the F in Fate.

After a shake of the spray can you will find it go's very cold. This is normal with spray cans but can cause bad things to happen if you use them right away. Stick it in some warm water for a min or two then use it. You shouldnt get the bad frost effect.

Huh?
What the hell kind of primer you spraying that turns the can cold when you shake it? If that ever happened I'd take the can back or throw it away.

If a brush on gloss coat failed, Ive heard rubbing alcohol can help. Ive never tried it though.
Your results look like theyre on the rather extreme end of frosting though- it looks almost like it came out lumpy.

LOL
Thanks for the link!
Mineral Spirits/ Rubbing Alchohol is next up on the try list, It definitely needs to be melted a bit and smoothed as opposed to layered on with more coats, that won't help this particular case :(
Also ordered some zip kicker solvent from warstore as it was mentioned as a possible solution in the links Warboss kindly posted... I am determined to figure this out...

Just sacrifice a small mammal and call it a day. Failing that, heat under an incandescant bulb, spray with dullcoat, pray to the Emperor, anything.
Hell, if all else fails, rub some lemon juice on it. Probably won't do a thing, but everything is better with lemon.

Hi tom, i have seen this happen many times on Dakka , and so far the success rate is 100%
So go ahead and give mat varnish spray a try . No guarantees though since you already applied nail polish and gloss coat
( not sure if they change the chemicals )

Best of luck with the zip kicker.
I tried it when this happened to me.
It does help immediately however went back to frosty when it dried.
The extra coat of gloss sorta fixed it for me.
I think we all know how you feel and share your pain.
Best of luck.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the same thing happened to me, last year, on a Chaos Terminator Lord that I'd spent months converting and painting.
I found out after the event that humidity f**ks up GW Stain Spray, just like for yourself to late after the event. I tried every conceivable solution, from gloss varnish, nail cleaner, all sorts of solvent and sacrificing my first born but nothing worked.
Sorry but it ended up in the bin.
I do hope you find the solution, you’ve unfortunately more figures to try and fail with than I fortunately had.
Lesson learned, find alternative varnish or only use on a dry day, and test first on a blank.

not trying to sound like an ass, but this is EXACTLY why I don't EVER use spray sealants... i'm scared of em.
I use GW 'ardcoat. Yes, it makes my models all shiny. I think it looks nice :(

I use ardcoat followed by vallejo spray matt. It hasn't let me down yet.
I prefer a dull finish on my mini's.

Aw man that sucks a big one. You can tell those were going to look really nice too. Damn. I hope you can figure it out, if not, back to the painting table. Also this is why I dont like using anything from GW. They go for the way to cheap route, with the biggest mark ups. The stuff I always use is many times cheaper, and oddly enough works many times better. Live and learn I suppose

Thanks all,
I ordered some testors dull coat if all else fails. Luna, the nail polish remover was only applied to the hip-plate of the worst affected one, so I think overall they should be ok if I use that method. I am keeping my testing areas very isolated and small, to make sure I dont do even more damage lol... :S

I honestly shake my head in stupefaction whenever I see someone buying the GW spray from the local store. I won't try to steer them away in front of the owner since I know he's making money off it but some people just refuse to listen to reason (and I've told nearly everyone there to just go to Home Depot or Walmart and get Krylon primers/clears).
Ugh, oh well. Not everyone can be re-educated.

Lol no worries, stabbing myself over that bloody can already...
There is hope however.
None of the solvents dissolved anything, looks like the sealer is more or less impervious... BUT, the mineral spirits soaked it, and when wet, the colors are back to normal. When it dries, back to dusty. This does tell me however, that the gloss sealer then dullcoat MAY work... gonna try to layer on the mineral spirits a few more time to see if it will eat away at it over time.
