G'day Dakkites!
So, the new Predator film comes out in Australia on thursday, and given that the last one sucked pretty hard, I want to know if any one thinks the new one will be any better?

Do you refer to AVP1/2, or to Pred 2 when you say the last one sucked?
Pred 2 was pretty good, whilst AVP... well... the less said the better really...
It looks like the new film might be taking a leaf out of the first movie - jungle settings, predators vs humans, etc.
Though from the trailer I watched it doesn't seem to be based much on suspense and hunting as the first 2 films were - more just a rumble in the jungle. But I hope to be proved wrong about that.
It's about time that atmosphere came back into our cinemas - we all know you can pay for special effects, but we desperately need some films which actually suck you into them, even if the story is relatively straight forward

Whoops, yeah, good call Silver, I didn't phrase that very well. Predator 2, great! AVP, yeah, I didn't mind it, but the one following it, AVP 2, that was the one I meant. Sorry!

Empire wrote:John McTiernan’s muscular Predator, which pitted Arnold Schwarzenegger against an alien big game hunter, was a popular hit in 1987, but has struggled as a franchise. With Arnie replaced by Danny Glover in an underperforming Predator 2 and a pop culture profile maintained by comic book spin-offs (eg: Batman vs Predator), these also-ran ETs stayed on the star-map only by latching onto a more famous monster in game, comic and movie iterations of the Alien vs Predator concept. Predators can look down on Species, but only just.
This is essentially Predator 3, a dusted-off 1994 script by Robert Rodriguez (who produces) handed over to Nimrod Antal. It forgets anything post-Predator and spends a while on a different set-up which winds up delivering the same ingredients: sweaty macho grunts + jungle + alien huntsmen + killed-off one-by-one hardnuts + loner hero who seems to take this all personally. Alica Braga, playing an Israeli sniper, even looks like Predator heroine Elpidia Carrillo. Gawky Adrien Brody, cast effectively against type as a merc with malice, can’t fill Arnie’s fatigues – though when the shirt comes off, you can tell he’s logged serious gym time – and relies instead on a more Rodriguez-like simmering intensity with bursts of violence and tactical ruthlessness.
The supporting cast fall into the don’t-get-too-attached-because-they-won’t-be-here long category. The most interesting is the smart-suited, close-mouthed yakuza (Louis Ozawa Changchien), who slips off his shoes to wriggle his toes in offworld mud and performs the sword-moves in the best Earth vs Predatorworld duel scene. The rest are walking clichés: a Russian hulk (Oleg Taktarov), a chatty serial murderer (Walton Goggins), an African Death Squad killer (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali) and a Danny Trejo-type cocaine cartel hatchet man (unsurprisingly, Danny Trejo). A guest star shows up mid-film, and delivers a funny monologue, but the biggest missed opportunity is that – again – the monsters are conceived solely in terms of how cool they’ll look as action figures. Whatever characterisation they once had, mostly in Predator 2 and AvP admittedly, is dropped: we still don’t know why a spacefaring civilisation is so obsessed with big game hunting -- much less why they believe that hairstyle and those vests look better when not invisible.
Verdict
A solidly okay Saturday night effort, but unambitious considering the talent involved. Maybe Rodriguez should direct Predator Resurrection, but get a science fiction writer to script it.
3/5

I've seen:
Predator 1 - good.
Predator 2 - fail, but not epic.
AvP - first time was good, second time wasn't so great. Agreed, it was fun to see the preds kill something other than humans.
Personally, this one looks like its going to be meh. I mean, it just looks like they've grabbed some random people + morpheus, and shoved them in a jungle, with several dozen or more predators, which should be nigh impossible for them to kill, and the preds are gonna try and kill all humans. Somehow, they humans will defeat them though. End plot.
Either way, I'm still looking forward to this film.

I want so badly for this one to be good. But I agree its probably a slim chance of being good.
Predator - was friggin awesome. No doubting that.
Predator 2 - Had some pretty cool parts, and somehow I liked Danny Glober (that spelled right?) Not to mention the old ass Predator leader guy with the flint locks was a badass looking Predator.
AVP - I was digging this movie until the Predator gave that chick the tribal alien get up. Then it went dumb FAST
AVP2 - Uhm.......... I think I liked something in there but what was it... uh....OH YEA when it finally ended.

Pred1 had its issues. Some really bad effects but overall not a bad flic.
Pred2 is a lot better I think then others comment on. Its taking the jungle feel of the city. It has new Pred weapons and some pretty cool action bits. I liked the characters in it too.
AvP had some rather bad script writing. For example, the temple turns out to be a huge maze yet once the bomb is about to go and kill em all, they run out of it in 10sec. WTF?? Unfortunately it was a big AvP fan who directed it and tried to put all his fav comic bits in it. FAIL.
AvP2 I liked actually. Problem is no one wants to see pregnant lady's and baby's get munched. A big FAIL there.
Ill be seeing the new Pred flic for sure.

That's them trying to shoe-horn the old Dark Horse "Aliens Versus Predator" comic plot in. In it, a colony was built upon a Predator hunting ground. A Hunt went bad, the young Predators doing their proving hunt died, the Xenomorphs got out and even had a Queen hatch(the first of many bad things to happen ), and a human woman named Yumiko rallied the few remaining colonists to essentially assault the Xenomorph Hive. As that happened, the Predators showed up to collect their young and instead found them dead from the Xenomorphs, and the Xenomorphs coming after the lone human survivor--who had just killed the Queen.
They 'adopted' her, let her live among them for awhile and then she left their company--rather violently--when they began a hunt on a human colony world.
That, again, the Predators frigged up with their hunt. The Xenomorphs wiped out the Marines protecting the colony, and the Predators wiped out the Xenomorphs.
Then they started hunting the colonists. Yumiko hunted the Predators back, and killed them all with the colonists' assistance.
It's all weirdly convoluted, but it's from 1988(? I think) and actually has a sequel story going on right now in the form of "Three World War" where the Predator culture is being explored a bit more in depth, including one of their myths of a renegade clan known only as "The Killers".

I'm off to watch it in an hour...
1: I have a free ticket
2: It is the sort of movie I think should be seen on the large screen (as opposed to talk fest)
3: I'd rather go tonight, rather than Sunday as I said earlier in the thread.
I will let you know if it is watchable or DVDable...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I hear that they're releasing Aliens v Predators v Twilight in 2012. The Alien stalks human girls with emotional problems, the Predator is shiny but also hesitant about committing to a hunt due to being a vegan, while the Twilight people are used for Alien incubation and make a cameo as a trophy.
Overall...

I liked it.
Cinema half full for a Thursday night 9.30pm session.
There were some things that could have been done better (no spoilers):
1: More interaction at the start, we get some backgrounds, and none for most. A bit of mystery is good (The Yakuza dude especially) but it felt that almost all of the background was left out in editing.
2: The success of the first movie was huge amounts of suspense interspersed with some brilliant action/gore. This lacked in suspense.
But any movie can be improved on.
I'm glad I watched it at the cinema.
Ending was interesting and opens up endless possibilities.
Also Adrien Brody has been hitting the gym hard!
