How cheap? Colour shapers are only a couple of pounds each and turn you into a magical sculpting god! (well, I think they make it a lot easier)
|
Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I picked up a couple of clay shapers the other day from Blackwell's Bookshop in Sheffield
Size 0 £2.50 each
Bestest thing EVER for GS etc in my experience
They are the rubber tipped things and easier to use than the wax sculpting type tools
I got a metal set for not a lot off ebay but they needed some refining - you gets what you pay for. They are okay to be fair but the clay shapers are superior Automatically Appended Next Post: ps the firm/extra firm would probably be best
shop around, the linky is for illustrative purposes
Am going to get a couple more

Yeah, ANYTHING that has the right tip can be used. This includes toothpicks, bits of plasticard, the tips of frames of reading glasses, sprue chunks, etc. etc.
Personally, the only tool I ever use for sculpting is an x-acto knife, whose blades are easily replaceable for cheap from the local hardware store.

The GW sculpting tool is their best hobby product. That tool is amazing and has so many applications. I highly suggest getting it whether or not you like GW.

Cheap as hell?
Use brochette sticks, just don't use it directly on the green stuff, but put some vaseline on it and then a plastic bag above it so you don't "cut" the clay.
I guess it cannot go cheaper than that.

See if you can find a dental supplier, or just ask your dentist if you can score some picks from him for at or near cost. Helps if you have a good relationship with your dentist, but it's easily the cheapest way to get a nice set of tools if you can pull it off.

sometimes nailcare sets come with this useless pick/shaper looking thing. and those are cheap *and* you can keep your nails trimmed! Automatically Appended Next Post: Sometimes nail care kits come with this useless little tool for trimming or shaping the cuticles or something like that. They tend to be very inexpensive and then you you sculpt *and* keep your nails trimmed!

I've recently started greenstuffing and am enjoying it thoroughly, but I do have a bit of a problem with keeping the greenstuff on the model and not sticking to the knife I'm trying to use (I'm doing very small details like blood drops and rivets for BA). Are these tools made to keep the greenstuff from sticking or do you still have to use water (I also keep hearing about Vaseline)? Are they just for making detail work easier?

D'oh! I misread you, and I find vaseline to be better than mere water xD
And my text is blue because I commanded it to be blue or else I'd smack it.
