Polanski was released today as the US's extradition request was denied. The reason the for the denial of the request is as follows: "The reason for the decision lies in the fact that it was not possible to exclude with the necessary certainty a fault in the U.S. extraditionary (sic) request." For those who forgot, He was being held in Switzerland on an international warrant for fleeing the US after pleading guilty to sex with a minor.

It's all politics at this point.

So he got off on a technicality, or a slip in bureaucracy? He is a lucky man really; he could have been looking at a lengthy prison sentence. Also, doesn't he have prior form for under age sex; I seem to remember reading that the current plaintiff is not the first to throw accusations.

What? It sounds like they said no, couldn't come up with a good reason so they stuck a bunch of long words together to confuse the US.

Sort of. It reads as though Polanski gets off on a technicality but it could be as you say.

A shame really.

Lesson learned from this case… if you drug and rape little girls just flee to Switzerland and have no fear.

Heres a snippet from an article:

The Swiss government blamed the decision on U.S. authorities, saying they had failed to address defense arguments that the 76-year-old filmmaker had actually served his sentence before fleeing Los Angeles three decades ago.

Nine months after arresting Polanski, the Justice Ministry said U.S. officials should have backed up their request by providing confidential testimony about Polanski's sentencing procedure in L.A.

Yeah, his original sentance was 90 days of psych eval/therapy. He was released after 40 or so by his therapist, and the judge then wanted him to finish the 90 in jail.
That is what the Swiss wanted info on... did he actually do his time or not? The US chose to not provide the information.

Actually be a French citizen and run to France. They refuse to extradite their citizens, ever.
