hi fellow wargamers

I was thinking about beginning with warhammer fantasy. I thought about starting an empire army. But not a normal empire army, I am planning on doing them just like the Terracotta army from china. Would that be a good idea?
1 problem would be that I can't add a lot of detail that way, because they are just living stone.
what do you think of this idea? would this be a go, or not?

I love the idea!

Oddly though, I keep getting the feeling that Tomb Kings would suit this perfectly.

naaaah they are too skeleton-ish for a terracotta army.

I know there are companies that create Oriental styled figures, but they're all metal and not much variation. GW old style "dog-fu" are hard to find, but may be out there.

Good luck.

True. Just the way they work, and with lots of chariots. Those Chinese really, really loved their chariots. But I wan;t thinking models, just rules.

yeah I could use empire models, convert them to tomb kings standards, paint the like terracotta and use the Tomb kings rulebook. That would work. I am not looking for oriental styled models, that wouldn't be fit for whfb i think

Well, technically speaking, there IS Cathay, with it's Terracotta Guardians and Great bastion *coughWALLcough* of Cathay, so you definitely have the fluff covered if thats a concern.

ahhh, I still need the rulebook though. This project probably will be putt of for a long time. I just had this idea and it sounded awesome. It might be a project for about next year. I'll first see what new release come up.

Honestly, I've had the same project planned up for myself.

If you want to convert GW models (to use in GW-sanctioned events), it'll be a lot of work. Honestly, High Elf models are probably a better starting point since the robes are more reminiscent of the Qin dynasty clothing armor than the Empire models.

Alternatively, as mentioned before, you could find historical Qin dynasty army models and paint them up like terracotta clay.

come to think of it, High elves do look better. In this case, I will mix tomb kings, empire AND high elves. (this will probably not be the case as this would cost me fortunes)

I do want to convert them using only GW bits to use them in tournies eventually.

Definitely an awesome idea! I would say use the Greatsword legs and body for most of the units, so they all look like they're marching or frozen in time. I bet this army will turn out amazing when you get it close to finished. Keep us updated!

Strangely, I find that Stormvermin have a sort of oriental appearance to them as far as their armor goes (though their polearms don't look like oriental polearms I know of).

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Might have to rethink what army I will use as a base.

Given the non-living nature of terracotta warriors, I would imagine that one of the Undead armies would be most appropriate to use as a "Count-as" army.

Well, rules-wise, that is, they're more suited for undead.

Model-wise, I still think High Elves are your best bet:

The biggest pain in the butt is going to be modeling on that armor. The robes, though, are close to that of the High Elf Archers. The rest is just paint-work, really. And the occasional "broken" statue.

Not necessarily

The possibility is there for some very interesting weathering.
Staining from aeons buried in their tomb. Possible salting that you get on terracotta when it has become damp.

Some of the scale effects might be subtle but could look really good.

On the other hand, a coat of Citadel Terracota, a wash, a matt varnish and Robert is yer mother's brother!

After reading this and talking to people at my local gaming club, I am going to start a Tomb Kings army using terracotta high elves!

Just need to work out an appropriate "counts as" for scorpions and swarms.

Will post up pics of my test models in a couple of days.

Im not gonna lie, I had this idea as well. I was planning on using various empire a tomb kings bitz, and using the tomb kings rules. For paint, I was going to use a spray can that I found that sprays specks of paint and ends up looking like stone. But now that Im thinking about it, Terracotta paint sounds like a better idea.

if you mean like the clay soldiers the first emperor of china was buried with, I'd say no, but only because there is a much better army to represent them.

Tomb kings and vampire counts.

Both are undead and both have something you could represent with a dragon. I'd say go tomb kings and go full out First emperor style.
