This was a hypothetical question that came to me this morning (in the shower no less)-what would have happened if Guilleman had never wrote the Codex Astartes?
Picture it this way-in a reversal of roles, Guilleman is killed by Fulgrim on Isstvan V whilst Ferrus fights the Word Bearers at Calth. Now, this makes no difference to the outcome of the heresy-big E is still put on the golden potty, Sanguinius gets high fived in the throat etc. (I know one of the Ultra's big things was their numbers, so lets assume the Iron hands were the largest legion in this 'alternate history')
Fast forward to the meeting of the remaining Primarchs-Corax, Dorn, Vulkan, Khan, Russ, and Ferrus-and now none of them write the Codex. What would have happened to the nascent Imperium? Would it simply have collapsed under it's own weight, with no true military to defend it. Would the Legions have continued to operate at peak efficieny? Would the newly instated High Lords demand that the legions be broke down anyway, potentially starting another civil war?

Awww, that actually made me blush - it was worthwhile then, particularly considering yours is an opinion I value on Dakka (after reading your Legion ranking thing in particular)! Feel free to PM me for advice should you ever actually decide to play them!

But yes, good luck with your thread!

To get the ball rolling; I believe the Imperium would be weaker, with some Legions we know and love maybe destroyed altogether.

However, I expect factions such as the Inquisition would be less powerful and more protected by Astartes...

I don't think it would have been very different. I think the Legions would have broken down anyway, from the need to fight on multiple fronts against a variety of enemy attacks, and from their own volition. It would've been some de facto Chapterization, but they would've remained the same, in name at least. However, the outcome would've been the same : Legions disbanded, fighting in small groups on multiple fronts, in disparate locations throughout the galaxy.

More than likely, though I suspect that the marines would play a much larger role in the general running of the Imperium, due to their being a less formal method of administratum.

Guilliman would have been kicked out of the Imperium for managing to contribute absolutely nothing to it and for being the emperors most rubbish son, even worse than that angry red pokemon looking son that he had.

During the Siege of Terra (the greatest battle in human history) he got all hung up with the Word Bearers (probably discussing Books deals and publishing rights) and turned up late (remind anyone of a certain superpower in the 20th Century?).

Could Ferrus and the Iron Hands have replicated Guilleman's post-heresy heroics firefighting around the Imperium? Smurf-hating aside, it seems to have been an epic job holding things together until things got back on their feet.

If he couldn't have pulled it off, the Imperium would have been picked apart.

Let's assume for the minute that they could do, as otherwise this whole topic is pointless.
