So it's about that time of year again here in the USA, and as there's only one Games Day here this year I expect the competition to be much fiercer. I wanted to start this thread so that all the potential Golden Demon enterers (is that a word?) can get some advice from the guys who've been there and done that on subjects like what models they think will make a good showing this year, what will the judges be looking for, and what categories will be easier than others. Personally, I think that you're going to see a lot of Skaven entries for Fantasy, Space Wolf and Blood Angel (mainly a lot of NMM gold here) entries for 40k, and only very slightly converted stock models winning most categories, if it's anything like last year.

Read this if you're serious about GD *see below*. Just note some people will spend a year on their GD entry so its good to plan way ahead. Good luck.

Thanks. I started mine last September, and when I really stay focused I finish my entries in about a month each.

I definately think we're going to see alot of sanguinary guard entries, or entries that are results of using sanguinary guard kits. I feel that converted Tychos are going to be heavy here.

I also expect to see some awesome doomwheels in large fantasy model categories.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".

obviously, the most important advice to give anyone contemplating entry in the Golden demons, is to go and actually do it...
you can't win if you don't enter...

there are many painters who feel like they would never have a chance to win, so they stay home...
making the final cut for the first time feels a whole lot better than staying home because you didn't have the balls to enter...

the difference between a Bronze and a finalist pin is a completely arbitrary decision, by a judge who you don't know from Adam...
just go, and hope to make the final cut...
don't go in expecting a Slayer Sword, 'cause you will be disappointed 99% of the time...
it's just fun to share your work with some of the best painters in the world...
photos don't do any justice to the top-notch minis you will see...

as for categories, i've always felt that the squad categories was easier to place in, because everyone has the time to paint a single mini...
single mini is very competitive and little mistakes stand out so much more...
with a unit, you can get away with a slightly lower skill level, because a unit of 10 guys has a harmony all it's own in a well thought out scheme...

that's my 2 cents...

i can't wait to see this years entries, and i look forward to meeting a few Dakkaites when i make the trip next year...

i would love to go this year, and try to win another Demon, but i just bought a surf shop in Sayulita, mexico, and have to go get to work down there, so i can earn my money back...

best of luck to everyone making the trip, and entering those minis!!!

cheers
