So, on a model with honours but not in terminator armour, would it be represented by a crux worn on the left shoulder? Or is there something else to represent this?

The answer will determine just how hard my next few conversions will be...

I Believe a crux on the left shoulder is correct.

Every heretic that is crushed under our feet will be a testament to our undying loyalty to the citizens of Imperial Space. We will baptize ourselves in fire and emerge as the most steadfast defenders of humanity.” - qoute from my own homegrown chapter

Even if the unit is wearing power armour?

Yup. There's five such "Veteran" Crux Terminatus Power Armour shoulder pads in the Command Squad box. Very good for indicating "Veteran".

Well, maybe I should have waited to slice up that lightning claw to fit a powered armour arm...

At least my ground pounders will be happy, and suitably bulkier for it.

No

The Crux Terminatus is often represented as a small icon hung from banner tops and belts, by veterans in power armour.

As seen on this Captain model (among others)...

It doesn't have to be on the shoulder pad at all.

The question is not 'does it have to be' but 'can it be?' If I can display it on the shoulder pad, it means that I can do a little bit more with my ground pounders. If it's not a shoulder piece at all, then... well... more filing for me.

Some older power armour marines had exactly that, so I assume it's perfectly acceptable and fluffy. As I've never come across anything to say it wasn't since these guys were around...

Goody goody. Means I won't have to file off massive shoulder pieces for some conversions.

On regular Power Armour, it should actually be on the right shoulder.

The left shoulder was the pre-heresy configuration, before the Codex Astartes shifted the Chapter Badge to the left.

Rogue Trader-era power armoured models had it on the left. The Chapter Badge swapped over when GW moved on from the old RT-era beakies to the 2nd edition Marine models, and the fluff introduced the Codex Astartes bit to explain the change.

I vaguely recall there being some explanation given as to why Terminators kept it on the left, but I can't remember what it was.

I don't believe it is a rule set in stone. I'm sure the shoulder-pad is the most common state of affairs, but by no means the only one.
As has been demonstrated, provided the cross-shape is correct, and visible on the model, it is allright, and is legal in WYSIWYG terms.

This is Daemonic Cheese:

3000 Pts
2500 Pts
1000 Pts (And growing)

I'd put a quote here, but XKCD would have a better one.

No, the shoulder pad isn't the only place to have it displayed. The Commander and Command Squad sets both come with Terminator Honour medallions that can be glued wherever you want on the model.

You could also just paint something on.

just as a side note, how come you're asking? it is simply a modelling preference or are you worried about being WYSIWIG? do any of the remaining codices still use terminator honors as a separate upgrade like they used to in 3rd edition?

I can't tell others, but SM and SW don't have that anymore.

I am pretty sure, that Codex: Black Templars is the only current codex that still has the Terminator Honours Upgrade.

absolutely for anyone that knows the fluff and the importance of the crux terminatus, it works perfectly well.

That's the shoulder pad I was talking about. Kudos.

insaniak is right about the right shoulderpad thing.

I've just gotten a copy of Insignium Astartes, as I'm embarking on a mission to customize each squad and make them fluff-factual.
The left shoulderpad, except for in the case of Terminators, is usually reserved for the chapter icon or badge, whereas the right shoulderpad is used for squad identification and the like.

For instance, the right shoulderpad for a Tactical marine would probably show a central arrow motif, and to either side numbers indicating company number and squad number.

Veteran squads would have a crux terminatus symbol instead of the arrow motif, whereas veterans with designated roles or models you want to indicate have terminator honours would have a crux terminatus pendant, or have it indicated elsewhere i.e. on the kneepad.

The Crux terminatus shoulderpad on the left is usually reserved for terminators, and replaces the chapert icon/badge.

However, this is only a guideline, and is further detailed in Insignium Astartes (available in hard copy or online).

The final verdict is, it's your choice. I'm making variations for instance squad denomination, but I think consistency is the key.

Hope I've helped, and feel free to ignore this lol!
