I bought some Sanguinary Guard a few weeks ago, and decided to start collecting a little Blood Angels force to go along with them. I haven't worked up the confidence yet to start painting the Sanguinary Guard. But I've made a start on my first tac squad
And this is the first member... The base is somewhat inspired by the Terminator movies.

This is the second memeber... He's still a WIP, but coming along nicely.
And this is an old plastic marine that I thought I would paint up as BA just for fun
I actually have quite a lot of retro models kicking around, including a mk1 Land Speeder, and a bunch of 1st edition Space Hulk terminators, that I thought I might try forming into a retro themed army.

These are a couple of the terminators. I'm trying to use GS to model a Crux onto their shoulder pads, and I also made a chain fist, and a stumpy little power sword for the sergeant.
It would be nice to hear your thoughts Dakka. I'm not 100% sure about Blood Angels yet... I keep toying with the idea of switching them over to a BA successor chapter. I quite like the look of Angels Sanguine, but I worry that I might regret the more complex paint scheme later. I would certainly like to give them a bit more character and make them stand out more, but I'm not sure exactly how to go about it.

As far as changing your scheme, I'd say go for it. The blood angels look nice and crisp, but you'll see plenty of them out there nowadays, and while successor chapters are a little more complex, this just gives a bit of variety rather than red red red on all your marines.
I think the successor chapters also have great character.
Your painting skills are quite impressive! Especially for the red! excellent standard overall.
As far as GS modelling on the shoulderpads, I am doing a very similar project myself, but with casting. If you already have a crux terminatus shoulderpad (I think the terminator sprues give you 6 so someone should have one lying around), simply make an imprint of it with greenstuff, allow this to dry, and press it into a thin layer of gs on the shoulderpad, then trim. Working well for me atm, and saves all the labour of not only getting the crux's looking good, but coherent.
loving the beekees!

Actually that's exactly what I did with the GS... But it's quite slow going, given the time it takes to dry and stuff. If you check out the skulls on the first marine's base, I actually made them the same way too, except instead of using green stuff, I used plastic sprue. and melted it with a lighter and then quickly forced it into the GS mould, you can make dozens of skulls that way in just minutes, and they come out perfect... Just don't get the molten plastic on yourself cause it hurts like
Beakies are my favourite too I'm trying to do the whole force in MK6

Wow I might try that with the plastics. Do you need anything to lubricate it or release it from the gs mould?
I thought about doing beakies (my chapter is very hawk-lords-esque) but quite like the standard helmets and had some dark angels and black templars helmets lying around to tinker with.

You don't need any lube or anything. All i was doing was holding the end of the sprue in the flame until it catches fire, wait a couple of seconds then blow it out (trying not to inhale the nasty black smoke) and push it as hard as you can into the mould.
The first ones I did weren't very defined, but they got better and better the more I used the mould, and they are virtually indistinguishable from the GW ones now in terms of definition (though obviously only 1 sided).
I don't know why the first ones weren't as good, it might be because the GS takes a few goes to harden up, or it might just be because I got glue in the mould and it needed to be burned out first.
I tried it again with the terminator bits but it didn't really work, because the parts were too big. It seems it's only really good for making bits that are about the same width as the sprue as it needs to be pushed in quite hard... perfect for heads though.

I disagree on the plasma pistols. It all depends on your colour scheme what colour your plasma weapons are. Green works well with ba, and my hawk lords, whereas my tau urban cadre has blue plasma weapons.
The old models are great! Retrofitting them by conversions is a hard thing to do, but I can see them having their place too.
Keep it up!

I guess I'm not 100% happy with the plasma pistol. Though what bothers me most is probably that the colour conflicts with the black bolters.
But this is really all just a symptom of what I'm finding to be an unsatisfying colour scheme...
There is a lack of contrast between the red and the black really. It would be nice to get a 3rd colour in which is a bit lighter, but I don't really want to do it at the expense of the little black there is. This is why I'm so drawn to doing a successor chapter, so I can switch out red. But I'm also worried about crossing the line into overly colourful clown-marines, which is always a danger...
I might just stick with BA and try to work in more of the Light blue where ever I can, as that seems to work quite nicely where it occurs...
