I like the idea of naturalistic patterns. After all, the cutie mark is an inherent part of everypony.

I don't really think it was a 'Friend Zoned' ending. Looked more like the CMC had broken the ice about them, and they could start off with a friendship, which may then go further. Modern dating, after all, isn't looking at Marriage or even always copulation as an end point, but is angled more towards mutual enjoyment of situations.
