Hi all,

For your viewing pleasure(unless my work is soo bad it makes your eyes vomit lol) I have today my first post and a current project that I am working on. The idea to start was to create a small force of world eaters using older models to test some new airbrushing techniques and then sell them off as I have no room to display them and don't play chaos any more at the moment. The first piece to show with more to come is a lead rogue trader chaos dreadnought I got off a buddy. Unfortunately the technique I used to airbrush the red only shows when you get a 360 view of the mini and we all know without a 360 light source(which I do not possess) you can't see the bottom of the mini thus I can't show the effect. Either way the pics are still fairly good and show enough of the mini for your opinions. Mind you I'm not aspiring to be a Golden Deamon competitor anytime soon. Just a gamer with a liking to both parts of the hobby. So tell me what you think. Also I will post more of the project as it's finished.

I still consider this mini a WIP as it is a very hard mini for me to paint. Too many organic shapes, ugh ><. needless to say the rest of the lot might look amazingly better then this lol.

Only one mini will be of newer parts and that's a chaos lord with a deamon weapon. Namely a Khorne Lord with Bloodfeeder. The rest are 10 berzerkers. 9 old plastic 2nd ed models and I believe a 3rd ed. Khorne champion. Again hope you enjoy. And all opinions welcome.

Hi NinjaBiscuit!

Welcome to Dakka Dakka! Wow, I haven't seen that model dreadnought in a long time. It still is my favorite version. You're right, the organic parts are more Nurglish and troublesome for a Khorne paintscheme. You could try Painting the face black and dry brushing it up to skull white, it worked with my old Nurgle one but that was white on green, maybe more forgiving?

I can't wait to see all the classic and collectible minis you are working one! Beautiful base work on the Dread. I hope you make lots of money, those models were great for their time and still very Khornate!

Be well, be blessed!

Welcome to the forums. Nice work one the paintjob, and great to see such a venerable mini being painted. But where you really excell is on the base. Amazing work on that, ninjabiscuit and kudos to you. I hope to see more some day.

hey there.

great mini for a first post.i think it aged well XD

im not a fan of the thin bases, but i like the paintjob.

you could use a black wash for the metal parts and black wash followed by devlan mud for the gold parts.

I actually did wash the metal with black, TWICE lol. The gold was washed sepia twice as well. The biggest issue is that the model was stored with other lead minis by its original owner so some of the detail was rubbed smooth from abrasion with the other minis so the washes didn't do a whole lot of good. Unfortunately I don't have access to a lot of dough and I wanted that Khornate icon on the base but only had the newer dreadnought base so I was stuck with a thin one from my bits boxes. More will come soon as the wife has a week and a half off of payed vacation starting the 16th and I should have the berzerker squad prepped for painting by this weekend. I am debating on adding the same Khorne symbol to all the berzerkers bases as well. Just don't know if I have the dexterity and patience to cut so much plasticard.

I agree. I would love to see a limited release of the old Imperial Predator and I know they are ugly but, I would love to see the old Land Raider as well. And maybe a re release of the old RTB01 boxed set. I know Forgeworld is making some cooler stuff that is essentially revamped pre-heresy era stuff but still.

(UPDATE 1)

Well I got the first Berzerker done earlier today. I was debating taking a bunch of WIP pics but, this was the test mini. Since this one came out good enough for me I'll be painting the rest the same way. I was debating a lot more details like adding the same Khorne icon on the dread to EVERY base but, given I've created a time frame I want these done I kinda skimped on a couple things and also because my hands aren't that dexterous yet with plasticard cutting. I haven't decided if I want to add anything to the base like dead grass or shrub or anything. The marine came out a lot brighter then the dread so I'm debating keeping them with the group but, since the palette of colors still matches I'll probably just leave it. As soon as the other 8 plastic Berzerkers are stripped good enough WIP pics on the rest of the project will begin. Also pics of the lord will be included from start to fin.

So here is the finished Berzerker for our enjoyment. As with the dread the color fading creating from spraying a brighter red on top and darker lower down is kinda obscured from how my camera takes pictures and because I don't have good enough lighting and a photo booth for proper photography of minis yet. These pics are all taken on my stove top with two pieces of black foam board. I will probably move these to being taken outside under some shade.

Very nice, clean and crisp paintjob. Slightly better pics this time too, I think. Great work though, I'd love to see a character like kharn or the old metal CSM lords painted in your style. In fact, I think the reason I like your berzerker so much is that it reminds me of a simpler, but much neater version of my way of painting marines.

Yeah these older minis just screamed for a nice clean paint job. A lord will definitely be built soon. Using two of the Khorne shoulder pads from the new plastic set and a warhammer chaos knights cleaver looking axe thingy and much much more kit bashing. It will be cool. Much putty work and about a weeks worth of time focusing on painting and building nothing, but him(like 3-4 hours a day max). Also thinking of adding Kharn. In fact This paint scheme minus the airbrush fading is almost exactly how I painted my Kharn for my old chaos army.

(UPDATE 2)

A few WIP pics of how I'm going about restoring and painting the remaining five berzerkers. Next is assembling the Khorne Lord and then off to the painting booth.

This pic is me picking out the remaining paint very tediously with a hobby knife. Very time consuming but very much worth the final results when re-painting a figure.

(Update 3)

Some WIP pics of the lord. After rummaging through all my chaos bits I noticed a huge lack in what I thought I had. I have plenty of parts, just none I really really wanted so this is pretty much what I came up with. I'm trying to think of a way I could better blend the chaos knight arm holding the axe with the rest of the figure better. Doesn't look too bad though. I also plan on making the left arm a little more chaosy with a little putty work. The overall setup works pretty well. The lord comes in at 160pts with the mark of Khorne, a deamon weapon, and a jump pack. On average that's about 10-12 s4 power weapon attacks just as long as you don't roll any 1s. So tell me what you guys think.

(Update 4)

I tried REALLY REALLY HARD to get a rogue trader era Khorne lord on juggernaut but all the ones I found were like two or three days out of my payment range to jump on. On another note. NEW TOY!!!! and a pic showing the remaining 9 Berzerkers finally ready for some red paint. I was using a bottle feed airbrush and I must say..... uh.... they suck, well, at least for miniature painting they aren't the best. So I picked up a gravity feed as I plan on switching to dropper bottle paint for precise mixing soon after this group of minis sells. I only wish I had the funds for an Iwata. Oh well this badger should do just fine for now.

Airbrushing is definitely a very different way of painting. You can still line highlight the armor if it's your thing, but the overall effect of the highlighting is pretty cool up close without further detail. You can see the effect the best on the dreadnought because the red is overall a darker shade. I'm starting to get the feel more and more of the use of an airbrush too. Not but 15 minutes ago I used my new one to do the first layer of red on the berzerkers and I must say holy crap is it a huge difference. The paint flows so much smoother from a gravity feed over a bottle feed as the airbrush no longer needs to siphon as much power from the compressor to pull the paint through the nozzle. More pics soon as the lord needs a little more work and the next shade of red is to go on the berzerkers later tonight.

Very nice work! That Chaos dreadnought brings back memories, it was the very first Citadel miniature I think I ever saw.

The current one that I did was something a buddy of mine had lying around. I haven't even been in the hobby 8 years and some of the first things that caught my attention were all the older things citadel pumped out and as soon as I remembered the dread being in my buds possession I immediately traded him a bunch of bits for it.

Yeah, I hate Chaos being a loyal Imperial player, but these are very cool and also, good photos mate, I've seen lots of pics on Dakka, but yours are a very good example of how to shoot models!

I started off playing chaos and my interest died with the current dex and I just switched over to loyalist. Even so I still get a kick out of painting chaos marines in general. I have about 15 lying around along with a box of deamonettes I plan on doing something with eventually. I'll probably start a poll thread so the community can decide how I paint them. As far as the photos go I only have a 6 megapixel camera, but what some average owners don't notice on some models is an aspect ratio setting. I get the resolution I do now because my camera is set to a 3:2 aspect ratio which pumps out a total resolution of approximately 2800x1900 and photos are usually about 2mb a piece, not to mention I take almost ALL pictures with my camera mounted to a tripod.

(Update 5)

So here is the overall results of both shades of red. I use scab red as the base color and use heavy thinned down blood red for the highlight color. Mind you the blood red is almost water thin making good use of proper additives as thinner like flow aids and or Windex. The fourth picture shows the overall effect I'm going for. You can see it a lot better on the other Berzerkers I've done past the test model though it's not so much so that the first model won't properly blend in with the rest. There will be more of the lord coming up soon too. I'm currently starting on commissions again, but I am hoping to finish the whole bunch by next week and either list them on eBay or trade them off here amongst the community.

(Update 6)

Technically if I could get the really bad primer off of some other 2nd ed plastic berzerkers I would have about 18 in total but alas I could only scavenge 9 of them in a reasonable amount of time. Also this is kinda a shameless self bump lol. I became heavily sick over the past week which kinda incapacitated me. I did take some side time to finish the streets on my 4x4 game board(pic 3) which soon will be pictured covered with 6000+ points of marines. I did finished the lords detail, however I couldn't figure out what to add as my chaos bits are lacking flavor for power armor mods so I figured I'd just try and paint the armor fairly ornate, or try at least hehe. I did contemplate snagging an old RT era juggernaut but yet again it was just out of reach. Later this week I'll be starting a commission so I'll get to finish those berzerkers ASAP.
