So far I've noticed that my posts in at least two threads have disappeared. In this thread and this thread. Is anyone else having problems with posts mysteriously disappearing?

Odd. Has your post count decreased?

One of them was deleted as it was a picture of..Val Kilmer (?) attached directly to Dakka, we don't allow non wargaming pictures to be attached, and without the picture the message wouldn't have made much/any sense.

Oh, at first I thought it was moderator action but there was no message from a moderator and all the other off-topic pictures in the thread remained up, so I figured something else must be going on. So what about all the other posts with pictures of Val Kilmer that remain in the thread?

He had a military haircut.

They just linked to the offsite pictures, they didn't upload them to the Dakka Gallery itself.

Monster Rain:

Are you sure? I was certain that he had the same haircut. Actually kind of spooky when you consider that the pictures were taken something like 20 years apart.

Aduro:

That actually makes sense. Any suggestions for how one goes about linking pictures from off-site?

Find the Image you want, right-click and Copy Image Location, paste that link into your post, and put the Image tags around it.

Indeed. There's times a nice picture is quite fitting or apt -- and the one you'd selected was fine enough-- but we don't want or allow them to be hosted on Dakka directly. Because the bees and the unicorns in the babbage cortex lobe get antsy. Or something.

In your head, screwing with your thoughts...

If you wanted to cheat, you could have pasted a picture of one of your models in the corner...

Really though, I thought directly linking was discouraged, and we were supposed to reupload everything on imageshack or whatever first? Or am I importing extra rules from other forums I've been to?

That sounds like good net posting practice in general, MasterDRD, but I think that's for the sake of the bandwidth of the site you're direct linking to. It helps that site for you to host it somewhere else instead of direct-linking. I think the point was that the Dakka gallery is only for wargaming-related pics, so if you want to do that you'll have to use another service (I've been using photobucket, but honestly I got lazy and began direct-linking lately... and haven't looked back ).

This is just what I've gathered, though, so take it with a grain of salt!

The second half of my post, or the 1st part?
Photobucket sucks, they delete your photos after like 90 days or something like that... That's why I use Imageshack.

I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of true. None of my photobucket pictures have ever gone anywhere, and there's plenty I haven't looked at in months.

That's funny, I don't know what dimension your photobucket accounts are in but every single time I go to a thread with all the images missing they're always hosted on photobucket. (on any forum ever)

Probably because the owner moved them, or their account has used up its bandwidth allocation.

I've got images in my photobucket account that must be well over 4 years old by now and they are still going strong.

if you attach a pic to a message, does it get automatically added to your gallery? in the past this didn't seem to be the case (i've attached pics to messages without them being saved) but i uploaded a pic of a bit to a P&M thread and it later appeared in my main gallery page.
