I'm considering trying to make some chaos raptors, but I don't want to deal with the GW metal minis (also, the cost). My first thought was to use the winged backpack from the possessed sprue, but any bits dealer is selling it for at least $8, at which point I might as well get the metal. Is there someplace to get cheapish wings? I honestly don't care if it's GW or not. I'd rather it be plastic, but if I can keep the main body plastic for a comparable cost, then metal wings aren't enough of a problem.

Also, I don't want to use space marine jumppacks, so please don't suggest that.

Using some organic "bat" looking wings on a plastic CSM would be cool. I'm not familiar with the current bits available, but I have a sorcerer with metal wings from an old school tyranid gargoyle that looks cool. Pardon the primer and missing arm, this was my Nurgle sorcerer and the Death Guard are going through a repaint

You might be able to use Gargoyle wings. Not sure what to do with the rest of the set though. I'd also suggest collecting a certain type of Khorne Berzerker head and trimming off the bunny ears, as it looks very Raptor-y.

Okay, gargoyle wings do look decent. I'll have to look to see if I can find some for a halfway reasonable price (I really don't need the rest of the 'nids).

You could just get some of the Space Marine jump packs that GW sells. Sure, they don't look very chaos-y, but that's what greenstuff is for. Or, you could convert the Death Company or Sanguinary Guard into a raptor squad.

Maxmini.eu sell some fantastic pre-heresy style jump packs: http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=12&products_id=49

They also do sets of various types of wings that may come in handy.

There's a backpack with wings on the possessed sprue that looks totally awesome and would work better than Gargoyle wings. However, getting it from bits sites is a nightmare.

Yeah, that was my first thought, but at that price and hassle I might as well grab the metal ones.

I have a pretty good-looking Slaanesh sorcerer conversion that uses Eldar Swooping Hawk wings. They look very cool with all the separate metallic feathers picked out in different colors, but the downside is that it's a metal bit and it might end up just as expensive as the Possessed backpack when purchased alone. However, if you know how to make molds for greenstuff, the bit is very flat and thin, so it'd be very easy to copy at home, plus then you could bend the greenstuff versions for some re-posing.

Whatever you choose to use for the wings, I would suggest just picking up the regular Assault Marine set and then mixing in your Chaos bits for the bodies. You can always sell or trade the jump packs to some enterprising Blood Angels player, after all.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.

I bit's ordered the Dark Elf Harpy wings and smashed them onto some regular backpacks.

Here's the link to a thread I made...

Hope it helps.

I ordered some CSM and gargoyles. I might see about trying Alex's technique. I just really wanted plastic. It's just so much nicer to work with than metal.

Well, I have the sprues, so I started building them. These are the first two. The image quality is lower than I'd like (the camera refused to focus on them), but I think it's good enough to figure out what they look like. I'll have to update this again when they get painted, but that could take a while because I have a lot of other minis in line ahead of them.

Interesting use of the gargoyle wings to create your raptors.

May I suggest a different pose for your marines....the wings look too dynamic for the marines since they were meant as grounded unit (hope that made sense).

Other than that keep it up

Yeah, that is something I would like to do, I'm just not quite sure how to approach the problem.

You might not like the turn out. I however did. Just buy the 5 jump pack kit from GW and the 5 man box of Chaos Marines.

Use bitz for the units special weapons.

I've sold so many armies. :(

I'm not spending more money for this project, and I have the bits for 8 more chaos marines.
