Are they viable in this edition? I briefly considered one at the very end of third but it never came to fruition for me. With some tank variants available in plastic now, I did -briefly- consider it (though I might just wait for the next edition to join 40k given what I've seen about it so far). I figure tank heavy with just a few supporting infantry units (veteran squads with transports). Easy as pie but what does one need book wise in 5th edition for this endeavor?

Erm...the Imperial Guard Codex...

Or maybe the first few Forgeworld Imperial Armour books?

Veteran squads in Chimeras aren't just good - they're incredible. You've got special weapon spam and mechanization in one unit for not too many points. If you really wanted to min/max it, you could have two squads of vets in chimeras, one command squad in a chimera, and 3 squadrons of 3 Leman Russes for something like 2500 points. Of course you could always downsize from there, but still. Either way, you'll need to start with two squads of vets in Chimeras.

Yes, armour is viable, beware of deepstrikers, use mystics to get rid of those, and your set. Oh, and dont field storm troopers. ever.

There is an armored company army list available off Forge World in PDF, it's okay.

Basically, you lose meltavets and the elites, but can take LRs in your elites and troops slots. That's better than OK - maybe "pretty good". It improves to "horribly broken" when you put Slick Loader on your tanks... shoot the turret (and nothing else) twice in a turn if you stand still, for +20 points? YES PLEASE.

What's wrong with fielding Stormtroopers? (Mind, I haven't touched Guard since the last 3rd edition codex)

Problem with armored company pdf rules is that there was no scoring units since it was all tanks. You needed to ally in ISTs for scoring units from Witch Hunters or Daemonhunters and those are going away soon.

The most "recent" update to the IA1 Armoured Battlegroup most certainly included armoured fist squads, which can score.

I don't think it's all that necessary anymore, honestly. Yeah, you lose some fun and goofy rules like "grind them into pulp" or whatever that one is that lets tanks assault like huge, angry infantrymen, but otherwise you can basically make am armored list with the regular guard codex.

I mean...

CCS w plasma, chimera - 150
vets w melta, chimera - 155
vets w melta, chimera - 155
vets w plasma, chimera - 170

hellhound - 130
hellhound - 130

3x demolisher squad with hull lascannons - 525
3x demolisher squad with hull lascannons - 525
3x demolisher squad with hull lascannons - 525

this gives you 35 points to play with and you've got a 2500 point list with 9 demolishers and 6 pieces of AV12. Looks an awful lot like an armored company to me.

Love tanks... though mine are Elysian wheeled versions. I currently run the following (roughly) in my 1500 pts -

Coy HQ/chimera 4 x melta

vets/chimera 3 x plas

vets/vendetta 3 x melta

Hellhound

3 x sentinel

2 x hydra

2 x 2 Russ demolishers

Can't remember all the details, but that's a rough sketch and it does me fine.
