So is there a thread of epic fails that are labelled as (of course) "Pro-Painted" or "Master Painted" (like there is a mini painting school or something). Because, if not, here is my first submission - for the lulz -
Nurgle Converted Dread
I don't know why I fancy this one so much. From the painting, which appears to have been done by a small child, to the converting, which appears to incorporate a thinly-disguised lego brick - this mini is my favorite of the night.

When I first joined dakka Lunahound had a thread up about some "propainted " tyranids that were just plain eye melting
I recall the base being covered in long greasy black hair, and about an inch think layer of dust on the figure. Going to try and find the pic now.

sounds entertaining, I do hope you find it.
I'll never understand why people waste good models to crap paint jobs. Learn on the cheap stuff, not your Reaver Titan.
EDIT: I think I had a shirt in that pattern and color scheme in the early 90's when I was 8.

Midguard Models really cranks out some crap. They flood ebay with "master painted" things that don't sell.
I love their "paint things gray" version of NMM.

They must be making some kind of sales or it couldnt possibly be worth the hassle though.
Slightly infuriating to be honest, I originally tried to sell the HE dragon in my gallery, but the market was so floody with really dodgy basecoat+dip versions of the same model painted to EXTREME PRO LEVELS that I ended up just giving up, so they must actually be making sales :S
edit: I think these are just actually a single basecoat http://cgi.ebay.ie/Unit-10-metal-Ghouls-professionally-painted-/120613034112?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL

I don't wish to mock other peoples' paint jobs so I won't.
But it is a bit like the Xfactor auditions. Please don't embarrass by making such claims.
Possibly it is now too late and the damage has been done. Ebay "pro-painted" is now synonymous with, "miniature with some paint on".

Some of them may be pretentious and misinformed. Dakka would not attack any models you uploaded so long as you were realistic about them.

Let me be clear - I'm not mocking a single one of these because they are terrible (well, maybe that tyranid). I myself am an average at best painter.
It's because they are terrible, and presented as if they are above average. While "pro-painted" is a meaningless tag, it's clearly intended to indicate that it has an above average, professional job. It's only mockworthy if it sucks, and it's presented like it's awesome.

Actually, all "pro-painted" means is that it was painted by a "professional" painter, which is a true statement if those folks are doing it for money, or occupation. That is all it really means, so "pro-painted" is not a misleading term at all. It is not as though most say "Best paint job ever! Pro Painted beyond all your wildest dreams!".
Yes, I agree it is a bit gimmicky, but as a professional, or "Pro", painter, I suppose I am a bit touchy with this issue. Am I a good painter? Yes. Am I the best? Not by a long shot. However, if I put "Pro Painted" on an auction I post on eBay, it would not be misleading or incorrect.
Sorry, just had to get that out there.

Sorry, just had to get that out there.
If you take a literal definition then that might be correct.
However, the guy with the chaos tank dread says he is a lorry driver. So the painting of minis means with a literal interpretaion he is semi-pro at most.
Since driving is probably the main source of income then I would be reluctant to say that.
However, I would think that most buyers would take the expression "pro-painted" to infer work of a very high standard.
If the sellers above genuinely think they are that good then they have issues that need sorting.
On the other hand, if they are just saying it knowing full well their techniques and skills are lacking then it is embarrassing at the least and downright fraudulent at worst!
There are genuine professional painters who potentially won't use that status to help sell their work due to the proliferation of these ridiculous false claims.
I would however say that the really bad cases are not misleading as any sane person can see they are the work of amateurs.
But it is still very poor form to make such a claim imho.

I hate seeing the term pro-painted. Its especially used very lossely on ebay items. Ive noticed that people who are actually professional level painters dont refer to their work as 'pro painted' so I learned to not pay attention to anything that says pro-painted.....except for this thread

Well if they make money from it their professional. I've seen the work of 'professional' photographers which I know I have done better than (and believe me - I'm just about OK!) and yet know amateurs who are more creative. It's about marketing.
If I can spray an army, base coat it, dip it and base it and sell it then I'm a professional despite the fact that I'm only an 'ok' painter.

really?
Again, if you use the term professional it implies a level of excellence. It suggests that there is a good standard of service, and not that you are a trained monkey who can daub paint on a plastic figure.
It is not simply about whether or not you make any dosh.
Would you buy those minis because they have been painted by a "professional"

It might not apply to the number 4 definition, but it does apply definitions two and three. So they can still call it professionally painted.
That doesn't mean that you're a good painter just because someone pays you to do it for them. In design, you don't have to be the best. You just have to be better than the one who is paying you, thus he/she needs your skills. I mean, look at all the badly designed advertisements and posters in the world, and you will wonder who the hell gave money to those designers.
