Howdy there.

After a pretty long hiatus I decided to take up 40k again, as I'd actually have the time to do it, and it generally seemed to be the right thing to do

To shake things up a little, I thought I'd give the Orks a shot. I picked up the Black Reach set and I've painted a few Orks. From doing a bit of painting on Fantsy Orks, I was never too keen about the florescent tones people always seem to have as their Ork's colour scheme. I can understand Fanstasy Orks being a healthy shade of green, but space Orks live in a far more hostile environment, surrounded by pollution, fumes, and generally nasty substances. I liked the look of the Orks in the DoW games, so after looking around at other people's schemes I came up with this.

It's pretty similar to the standard GW scheme (Orkhide, Knarloc, Goblin Green, GG+BB) but with a bit of a twist. It is as follows;

Black undercoat
Orkhide Basecoat
Knarloc coat
Knarloc+Bleached Bone highlight
Bleached Bone final highlight.

I'm pretty chuffed with the result, and would like some feedback on it, but would also like to know how you think it would work across a whole army. I have a few Nobz to paint as well (but I'm leaving this until I've perfected the relevant techniques to get them looking good). Canonically, bigger Orks are greener, but I can't think of a way to keep the pale, unhealthy look without making bigger Orks fluorescent.

Well, here's some photos (forgive the horrendous quality; they were taken with an iPhone )

[Edit-Got rid of rubbish photos, replaced them with slightly less rubbish ones)

Honestly I can't give you any feedback because the pictures are far too blurry to distinguish any detail. Take some better pictures and then the community can help you out.

Nothing currently, got out of the hobby, maybe getting back in?

I figured that. That's the iPhone at it's best, and it doesn't even focus properly >_>

I'll try and find a better camera. Anything to say about the shade in general?

try taking a pic from a bit more distance, then zoom in afterwards.

your tiles are beautiful! the juxtaposition of the barbaric Orks and the cool relief of beige is somewhat... *ahem* sorry, from what I can see the shade is nice, I prefer the slightly lighter versions people do of the orks and yours looks good, but I agree will be better with clearer pics! hope to see some soon

On an iphone? You could only go zoom with an iphone if you strapped it to a rocket.

I liked the tissue monster on your tub of sand. Looks like something from Dr Who.

They look OK although taking the shot from further away you might get away with it, the ones on your paint station look in focus.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

You can allways zoom in on it in a paint program, not the i-phone.

Or if its the new i-phone, it has pic editing on it.

This one's 3G, so it's specifically designed to do nothing properly. Zooming in on the photo is even worse. They look in focus until you zoom in on them, and they instantly become a mess of pixels. I couldn't get the details into the shot, so I opted to just get as much of the shade in as I could (hence the focus on the arms). I'm a little busy at the moment but I'll give it another shot later. They certainly look a bit better than what the photos make them look like :x

Its not the camera. Especially the iphone's pic you have taken is good enough to clearly display the letters off
an instruction manual. Try taking the pic next time with the same distance as that manual.

I think you're giving Apple too much credit. Putting simple things like auto-focus or macro mode in your camera would require common sense!

There's an actual camera lying around somewhere but I'm having trouble finding it. Once I do I'll put some better pictures up. For the mean time I'd appreciate some feedback on the skin tone itself (which has sort of come out in the pictures), and any good ways to get a good tone similar to this for nobz and other big orks.

I'm definitely liking them from the blurs I can see.

The skin tone isn't bad, and I like the gray-black pants.

I like dark Orks, they look fine... though I think the best Ork hordes are those that have varied skin tones, throw in some more "swampy" ones or "sandy"...

It looks good, despite the blurriness. Your space marines are pretty nice as well.

When you take a picture, make sure you have a white background, like a piece of paper, one for the mini to stand on and one behind the mini, so you only have one backgroundcollour

Egads! New photos!

I couldn't find my main camera, but I did get ahold of a small Nikon camera. The display's a bit pants so I couldn't get a good idea of how the pictures looked so the focus is a bit off in some, but they're certainly better than the iPhone.

Big fan of the skin, especially on the Black Reach Nob. It really helps the muscular structure stand out, and I prefer the darker look.

Good job.

Time for a shameless necrobump!

I upgraded to the iPhone 4 ,which actually has a camera that takes viewable pictures, instead of digital mosaics viewed from inside a sauna. I've not had the time since last year to continue with the models, but I may have a little time in which to chill out with some painting, so I'll give you some clearer pictures to silently judge me with!

and just because I can...one of the Ultramarines that came in the box.

I might want a more "green" look with the bigger Orks (imagine how they are in the Dawn of War games, and in the upcoming Space Marine game). Am I onto something with this colour scheme, or should I opt for a more traditional look on the bigger guys?

Iphone is a good way taking pictures... Check my gallery if you don't believe me.

As for the orks, the skin looks great. It looks good and simple to do.

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.
