Title pretty much says it all, what marine codex do you think would work the best for pre-heresy alpha legion, see poll above.

It doesn't matter. Use whatever codex you like. The only proper way to play Alpha Legion is to show up with no models, claim to your opponent that they've already been deployed, and have one of your devotees set your opponent's car on fire while you're arguing. Boom. Alpha Legion victory through misdirection and unexpected tactics.

Alpha Legion's more subtle then that. You poor sugar into their gas tank.

...and then your opponent looks around and notices everybody looks just like you. Then he blinks and everybody disappears, leaving him disturbed and confused, forever unsure of if he actually woke up that morning.

LOL!

But, ahh, a serious answer - as someone said, Shrike-based Codex Marines will be the best bet. Sad how our 'Chaos' Codex is not good at actually representing anything outside a "Chaos Renegade" force.

what about running khan all those outflanking transports seem like they would be bennificial as well and reflect careful planning and tactical craziness of the alpha legion

It's on the water tank not the gas tank (which requires the car's keys to have access to it).

Here's how Alpha Legion should be played:

Deploy basic marines, then at random say they are some variant of a marine, redeploy them and have them strike the enemy. Then replace them with your opponent's models and send in an Imperial Guard regiment. once they do some damage, bring back in some of your marines, say they are sanguinary guard with 2+ invul and armor saves with c'tan phase blades, and kill everyone you can. Then remove them from the game entirely, send in a strike force of Chaos Marines for one turn, while your friends go to his house and steal all his food. Once your opponent takes a bathroom break, replace yourself with the manager of the FLGS, say your opponent has been playing against him all along, while you steal his credit card and buy a dozen land raiders and 4 Space wolves battleforces just because you can. Finally, you come back to the game and finish off your opponent by bringing in a count-as Nightbringer who is really Alpharius but is actually a pretend Omegon and destroy his commanders and tanks, while placing random assault marines on all objectives, claiming victory.

Or you could just use the Space Marine codex considering preheresy was not chaos marines.

Go Alpha Legion!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Adding to my first post, that is how I play Alpha Legion. Because I am Alpharius. Or am I Omegon? Or both? Or just some deranged teenager who wishes I could be a space marine?! Or someone who is really Alpharius but is actually Horus in disguise while just having nothing to do and too much free time before I go to bed?!?!?!

I think I'm following the teachings of Night Haunter right now with my disturbing rant.....

Well, you want infiltrators and stealth.
I'd go with the CSM codex and take Chosen as Alpha Legion Marines.
