Found this little sneak peak at the Forums. Interesting indeed! (Note that WF is primarily a True Scale 28mm and that this is part of their upcoming Ancient Greek Line so more than likely this will be truescale)
As you all know, the first set for Legacy of the Greeks - the Persians - is on it's way and we'll be showing off some plastic next week.
The second set is almost ready to go to tooling.
We thought we'd take a slightly different approach and use this as our first foray into Alternate History.
As many of you know, many people in the Ancient World - including Caesar and Pompey - legitimately believed that Amazons were real. Pompey even wrote that he had fought against a unit during one of his forays into the East in 66 BC!
We wanted to explore this idea by creating our first Alternate History set (eventually an entire range actually) - the Amazons!
This first set will be classically "Greek" in feel but with the attributes that made them famous warriors.
Here's a preview - your comments are very welcome as we work to complete this set!
This body type will be able to hold a bow (as shown - although arms are not complete with arm-guards yet nor a quiver) - or can have a spear ready to take a charge. There will be fewer of this body type in the final set than standing figures.
Edit: Fixed Pics

Must be Zeus again Hera aint doing him any favors!
Anyways these are probably not going to be made into production for a while. Just some test Computer models. Wouldn't expect any seriosu work for a few weeks/months. Still a female plastic set sounds pretty exciting. not many of those out there

I've always envisioned Amazons as taller than most humans, topless, and with one breast (archery). Essentially female spartans.
If you're going to make them slutty and give them exposed midriffs, you may as well go all the way and make them topless for the believable shock value.
I'm also not a fan of the pigtails; they seem out-of-place in an ancient setting and only there to indicate that these miniatures are "not male". As a personal preference, helmets and short (puffy) hair would be most believable. Maybe even neckline hair for more "feminine" heads.
Otherwise, bodies, mucles, and poses look great (aside from the torso designs).

Hmm valid complaints. Gonna check in with WF. Hopefully we wont get too much "chainmail bikini" psychology going on

The pose is horrible, who shoots an arrow from that position or holds a spear like that? It would look better if the knee was on the ground or the figure was more upright.
As wargames factory tends to provide head options I have no problem with this head and it would make a nice head to add to a more modern figure such as a zombie or survivor type, sets which this company is also involved with.
If they are supposed to be Amazons then one of the breasts should be removed to make the firing of arrows easier.

I'd say go with this, but forget about the Ancient Greek urban legend about them cutting off one breast. AIUI, this is nothing but a made up explanation of the name that is contradicted by the art. Besides, we already have plastic models with only one breast.

And I'll third the complaint about the hair.

Have to double on saying the pigtails + silly armor is ruining them.
Look like cheerleaders with weapons.
Long wild hair or braids + nude on top or with a full breastplate would look better. While only having the one breast would be excellent, I doubt it is something that would help them sell

I never got why amazons were supposed to cut a breast off to shoot... It sounds like a stupid idea some greek guy made up because he had something against strong women. Didn't celt women fight alongside the men? I never heard of them cutting their breasts off.

You ever had a bow string slap your wrist? I have many times and it hurts, they also get in the way of the string putting a real limit on the draw length and strength of the bow. I don't feel it's plausible more due to the amount of blood vessels there and the problems of such severe surgery in the prehistoric period wiithout modern medical care. It's far more likely they wore something like a sports bra to keep themout of the way. Thats how most women archers I've known have done it. They also actually currently make breast guards for the left breast which could be what the scholars were describing. As this guy is sporting.

Tieing hair back is keeping it out of the face I prefer hair tied back to long loose hair on miniatures of either sex, helmets would be cool however. When looking at the garments remember what the Spartans were wearing and also remember that these were based around the Black Sea which is 30-40 degree heat. So short clothing is accurate and again better than long loose clothing.....

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. They're a good start. The hobby needs good plastics for women and some women inspired by Greek legend are right up my army's alley.
The Good:
The spear- it actually looks like a spear! Not a log with a flat, sharpened spade on the top. And it has a counterweight! I could almost kiss the designer.
I dig the greaves and bracers as well.
The bad:
I'm going to have to agree about the chest armour. It looks like it can't decide if it wants to be an embellished breastplate creating the illusion of a goddess-like physique, or a wet t-shirt. I wouldn't mind the bare midriff if the armour itself looked a bit more realistic.
The hair too.

The whole "cutting off a breast to shoot better"-myth is a joke. Cutting off a breast is a pretty large operation, and in the ancient times, it would most likely lead to death from blood-loss or infections.
Several cultures have had warrior women, and none of them have cut of a breast.
I have to agree with several others that the armour look silly. It looks more like she is so thin that her ribs are peaking out than an armour plate. Pig-tails is also silly, gives them a cheer-leader look
Also agreed that if you're going the slutty way (and I think that will be wise from a monetary standpoint ), go topless or maybe gladiator-style armour, not chainmail-bikini

My understanding was that they didn't cut it off, but rather ritually branded the young girl children. They burned them, turning the breast into a mass of scar tissue that would never mature.
I'm sure a few minutes of googling would tell me if there was an validity to it, but I'm lazy.

The myth of the Amazons is supposedly based on the historical Maiden Guard found in some Indian armies, or else the Saka or Scythians who may have provided recruits for such Maiden Guard units.
It is generally agreed, though, that if such units genuinely existed, they would have been household or palace guards only, small, and never used as front line units.
Nonetheless they are popular with wargamers for adding a bit of colour and interest to a large army.
WF may as well do these figures for Fantasy use.
I agree the poses are very stiff and the hair is weird. Also the spears are far too thick but could easily be replaced with piano wire or whatever.

Yeah, you can definitely see the CAD design mark on them. It's kind of similar to how you can tell a less than perfectly photo-shopped photo, or some bad CG in movies. It always shows.

I don't like them very much, and WGF has horrible customer service. So even if I did like them I would not buy from WGF.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

I don't mind paying a few dollars more knowing the miniatures will be really detailed and well proportioned. I am fading away and making a decision not to get 28mm anymore and get 15mm Sci-fi. They are smaller and cheaper. Less arguing of the detail and I can get a whole mess for a cheap price.
