-general Myst thread-
Did anyone ever play this game?
I remember reading some official something name it the least violent action game that will ever be made.
Loved this game, and the multiple endings.

I've never played the sequel, was it any good?

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

Myst will more than likely make you go subtly insane. Some of those puzzles are just...wow....

That being said, go get it. Everyone, now.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

Myst, no. Pyst, yes.

Its a depication of the world of myst about 900 years afterwards, when all the people have travelled through it.

Myst was/is overrated crap. Half the puzzles made no sense, you couldn't logically reason out what you needed to do. The other half were either too simplistic or just painful.

Myst was great, I remember playing it for hours with my dad, he wasn't into 'normal' computer stuff but Myst really got him thinking we'd sit there for like 5 hours at a time trying to figure out a puzzle, if I remember correctly we finished myst but not Riven, were there any others after those two?? i'd love to have another go at something like that.

No I finished it, I just genuinely think it's crap.

I found it a break, actually. It had no time limits (well, that one puzzle with the flame) and you could figure it out by yourself. I always loved the pirate ship age. (forgot the name)

Can anyone tell me which myst to buy my dad? i never realised that there were more! i'm inclined to buy the last one number 5 because it should be the best graphically but i'm not sure? maybe 4 would be better to re introduce him?

4 is better than 5 IMO.

Myst was great. Going back and playing it now it didn't age well (visually), but at the time it was amazingly immersive. The puzzles all made sense. They were just all logic puzzles that took some note taking to work out. The most common problem you had to solve was constructing some sort of coded command. The mapping of the symbols in the code would be revealed through exploration, but usually one or more symbols would be missing or lost (and the player would have to logically deduce the rest of the sequence from the information they already collected).

Riven the sequel was very long, and came on like 5 or 6 CDs which at the time was a ridiculously large size for a computer game. The puzzles were also much more challenging IMO, but not impossible. I played all the way till the final puzzle when it first came out and couldn't figure the last one out. Revisited the game in college a couple years later and finally beat it.

If I have problems with Professor Layton, should I avoid this game?

Did someone say there were 4 or 5 of these!?

I played through Myst and Riven, and my whole family got into it. It was great... good memories!

There's actually 6:

Myst
Riven
Myst III: Exile
Myst IV: Revelation
Myst V: End of Ages
Uru: Ages Beyond Myst

There's also 3 books.

Wow! I think I've read all 3 books (possibly only 2). I thought they were excellent . Any suggestions about the games beyond the original myst and riven?

Edit: Heh, just found the other thread on this, and it looks like 4 is being suggested after the first two...

I've only Read MYST.
What are the names of the other books?

It was great for some folks, but stale toast for others. I myself couldn't get into it (and I'm a puzzle fiend). My father, however, devoured it and the sequels.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

I just got this game a few weeks ago... The puzzles are so confusing.

I never met someone who successfully completed any of the myst games without keeping a notebook for the various puzzles (well anyone who didn't cheat by using a FAQ). It's not something you just stumble through.

There is no single book named Myst. The novels were Myst: The Book of Atrus, Myst: The Book of Ti'ana, and Myst: The Book of D'ni, collected into a volume together named the Myst Reader.

Riven was amazing.

Myst was too, but Riven's atmospheres were fantastic.
