MIAMI — A Christian minister vowed Tuesday to go ahead with plans to burn copies of the Quran to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks despite warnings from the White House and the top U.S. general in Afghanistan that doing so would endanger American troops overseas.

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center said he understands the government's concerns, but plans to go forward with the burning this Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the attacks.

...

A Facebook group has been set up called 'International Burn A Koran Day' and is linked to from the church's website. As of Tuesday morning, it had 8,539 members.

A member of the church, Fran Ingram, told msnbc.com that they had a "stack of about 150" Qurans, which she said had been sent from across the world. "We are expecting to burn about 200 at least," she said.

"I think we should go ahead personally," Ingram added. "That's what I think. I stand with the pastors. We need to go ahead with it."

The level of intolerance is staggering, to me.

It's been a crazy old world since 11/09/2001.

My slightly controversial opiniion is that the best reaction to events of that day would have been to ignore it.

I'm not a muslim, but I still burn bibles. I'd burn korans too if I could get free ones to set ablaze. And talmuds. I'd totally burn those, too.

I'm sure you could. I don't think that's really the issue.

Runnin up on ya.

Ah, nothing says good 'ol 'merican inbreeding like a nice old fashioned book burning.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Plus, you can burn images of the Great Speghetti Monster. I prefer boiling them though, preferably those of the Angelhair pasta sect.

Nevermind that, it's the grammar that's atrocious.

You made my day, Frazz! Although I'll have to disagree, the fettuccinean sect is much tastier.

Of course you're both wrong. The Flying Spaghetti Monster accepts and loves us all equally, whether we prefer angel hair or fettuccine. After all, did he not create many types of noodles for many different people to enjoy?

Yes, but alas, like all gods, even His High Spaghettiness must be torn down and forgotten if mankind is to claim his destiny amongst the stars...

Couldn't this guy do something useful, like burn C.S Goto or Dan Brown books?

Book burning doesn't have to be bad.

When I first heard it it actually really pissed me off, but something about the way Fraz uses the idea makes it funny for me.

Haha, i made the same mistake as the previous 2 posters.

However i am oblivion to what is "Koran" is.

As I interpreted it as being "International Burn a Quaran Day".

Least i think thats how its meant to be spelled. Thats the only religious book iv heard of thats even close to that.

Iv probably missed the whole thread knowing my luck lol.

Edit: after actually looking at the link in the OP, i realise my assumption was right but have nothin to add.

@ Ultrafool: That's what I thought at first too. I was expecting some kind of Chinese protest or something...

Shouldn't this guy be spending the church money on helping the homeless or cleaning up the parks instead of buying books for a fire?
