You can spell it either way. It's a romanisation of a word that originated in arabic, there's no direct swap for the arabic sound so both k and qu are equally valid approximations.

Speaking as someone who may at one point have done just that, while the paper is about as thin the chemical treatment is not the same. It was nasty.
