Quite a few people are going to be doing something dramatic today, like burning Korans. Most people will be doing nothing at all. Some will celebrate, some will mourn. Nine years ago, our country suffered one of the greatest tragedies it has ever known, and yet people have the audacity to say things like;

"Tomorrow's 9-11, and I don't even care."
-Overheard from somebody at my brother's school.

It is not a day to be making stupid jokes about "doing barrel rolls" and other such nonsense, but instead a day to mourn the losses of so many innocents, pray for the safe return of so many soldiers, and be thankful that those soldiers are there to protect you and your rights. On this day, the 9th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks, I ask of everybody only one thing;

One Minute of Silence

Now I know that hearing "a few minutes of silence" over the intercom or PA makes a lot of people sigh, but it is an important gesture. One that shows respect for the dead, both those killed in the attacks, and the deaths of hundreds of US servicemen and women who have been serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So please, take one minute of your time, bow your head, close your eyes, and remember. Those who died do not deserve to be forgotten.

Thank you so very much for posting this. It's really sad that people want to spread more hate for innocent Muslims instead of the soft remembrance. I understand that many people in the modern era are not very patriotic, and kids especially don't fully realize what happened.

I'm just worried that conspiracy theorists may use this day to spread their ideas.

Yeah, I completely agree with that. My best mate is in the Australian Army and will be going to Afghanistan next year with his regiment. Just before he joined the army I gave him a letter on his birthday with a phrase that I read and always rang true on days like this.

God and the soldier
All men adore
In time of trouble,
And no more;
For when war is over
And all things righted,
God is neglected -
The old soldier slighted.

I will observe the silence today, I always have. It will be a time to reflect on the death of innocent people at the hands of malevolent people and doctrines of hatred.

It will renew my belief in the removal of those people and doctrines from the face of the earth.

I used to live in america also and always remember that day, it was a great tragedy and one that should not be forgotten if only as a reminder of the evil that people can do to innocent others.

At the same time though i really do wish that America would stop being such a self obsessed nation and realize there is a world out there that has greater tragedies going on. just look at Hurricane Katrina and the mass of TV it still gets, yet in Pakistan there is still flooding that makes Karina's flooding look like a puddle and thats several weeks since it originally occured. where is the proportionate tv awareness for that disaster?

and without trying to dilute this thread too much what about the 1000's of Americans suffering due to a disgracful health system in America which sees millions of people unable to afford basic health care and medicines. It seems strange that a disaster created by others gets so much thought and effort when a disaster created internally continues.

But back to the thread and ii will def observe the silence as it was a terrible day for so many.

Hmmm, I was uncertain if you meant it to be seen as apathy, celebration or self-punishment.

Hard to believe it's been almost 10 years. I remember the day it happened only vaguely - granted, I was in 4th grade at the time. I just remember hearing about it in the morning, then having the TV on for about 15 minutes in class so people could see what happened.

All I can say is that my heart goes out to all those affected by the tragedy that happened back in 2001.

I vaguely remember the day (I was nine, but I have a terrible memory). Everyone's parents were taping the news, and constantly trying to tell us what the hell was going on.
Then I quite literally forgot it happened for 3-4 years...

I would like to say that taking a moment to remember a tragedy is not the US being self important. Lots of people lost loved ones, and 9/11 was one of those events that permanently scar a nation's psyche. It's not something to be taken likely.

It's not a day to remember MUSLIMS ARE EVILULZ. It's a day to remember the tragedy that befell us all that day. The only ones who use 9/11 as hate Muslim day are racist bigots who would hate anyone whose different anyway. They just get to use this day as an excuse to be open about it.

I remember the day well, i was sat in a classroom at CTCRM doing a dog-gak intro to some new comms equipment, and a guy came in and told us that "some fether just flew a plane into the trade centres in New York!"

I selfishly remember thinking "awesome! We will get to go to war for sure!"

And we did. It was awesome. Afghanistan was kinda dull during the initial invasion and just involved alot of walking up big mountains with alot of crap on your back, but Iraq was quality! I got to drive a quad filled with guns and ammo right up through the al few peninsula, see the worlds best multi million dollar fireworks display, got to shoot and blow gak up, its the stuff boys dream of!

Things arent going as well for us now as i would have liked, but im pleased that we (The hated west as a whole) lost 2977 people and now Islam is down about what? A couple million?

WIN.

Whenever i have an argument with a taxi driver (i tend to purposely troll them) and they start gobbing off about it, i always like to say "hmm.. 3000 dead infidels and 2 million dead Iraqis... that went well for you guys eh?"

Never forget, and never forgive.

EDIT- Chris, ive freely admitted i dont like Muslims, but how is that racist? I dont like white muslims either. It's just a pet peeve and I love arguing.
Also, is watching Tom & Jerry a good way to remember 9/11?

Post away mate. I value your input.

The world is being left is a gak state thanks to dogmatic religions. You can say "its not all muslims" or "its a tiny minority" or whatever, but the fact remains that Islam IS inherantly misogynistic and intolerant as COMMANDED by the Quaran and the Hadith. Its all right there in black and white for the whole wide world to read. Sit down and read any of the big three's books and tell me its all awesome.

I know most of the big three arent violent, but people dogmatically following their desert scribblings most definately have a negative effect on the world, and it will take some graft on your part to convince me otherwise.

I wasn't claiming that a dogmatic following of religion isn't negative (And I do think it is religion in general that is a problem, not the type of religion). I do, however, take issue with the obvious glee you displayed in discribing the "score" of 3000 innocents versus 1 million. I know you didn't really mean it, but those comments are insultingand do nothing to portray the Armed Forces or the Western World in a good light.

Of coarse they would, but the same can be said for families that loose someone in a car accident, but we all gawk at the wrecks while we drive past on the motorway and there isn't a national 1 minutes of silence for it (both the UK and USA have far higher death tolls to this a year than the number that died in the towers).

different things effect poeple in different ways, if you where not directly related to one of the victims, or living in new york, or a patriotic american, alot of things will be more emotionally charged than 9.11.

that leads to the next point, alot of people in commonwealth and european countries forget it is 9.11 cos to them, even though it is drummed into them by the media, means 9th november, so if you don't have the tv on, with the news playing you simply don't realise.

and there are alot of people that will only ever associate the event of 9.11 with the key reason as to why alot of countries went to war while the U.S. looked for someone to punish no one gave a memorial 1 minute silence for the arch duke franz ferdinand after the war, but they did for the people who died in WWI.

although i do feel sorry for the victims of the attack and the families that were left, for most people mourning is related to the level of association and there will be those that are apathetic

Did you know that 67 British people died on 11th September, making it one of our worst terrorist attacks too? I think we forget that sometimes and think of it as something that happened to Americans. People tend to criticise the UK's level of support for the US administration post-9/11, without realising that after the USA, Britain was the single country that lost the most people in the attacks by quite a significant margin.

yes i did (well actually 66 as i don't think many people even know that bermuda is part of the UK, let alone believe they are british), but i don't know any of them personally or any of their family personally. you can also use the same point to critise the US public in their lack of knowledge of who actually died in the attacks.

the list of the dead also includes muslims, jews, homosexuals, and dare i say the dreaded mexicans, but there are alot of (as they refer to themselves) God-fearing, white christian republicans who gloss over this.

for myself, and i think many other people would still critise the US administration post-9/11, even if they knew this
