Right, soon I plan on starting painting my army!!
This will be the first time i have painted since i was 6-7, so my painting knowledge never went further than painting from the pot!! *shame*

This is the colour scheme i shall be going for across all my miniatures

What i wanted to know and ask really is this.

How should i start?..What brand of paints? Vallejo, Reaper, Coat D'arms, GW? i see so many in tutorials and videos i'm massively confused!

Brushes?..I mean i figure i will need a base coat and wash brush, along with some fine detail ones!...But do i go Army Painter or GW?..Kolinsky even?

Thinning paints, water?..P3 Mixing Medium!?..Reaper flow improver!?

Essentially, how in the blue hell do i start!...I am a COMPLETE newbie as-far as painting goes!

Well you got about 7 different colors there. I think since its a bright color scheme that you should prime it white and you can use any colors that you would like GW and Vallejo are the most populars. Dont get GW brushes does suck and to thin down your paint you can use water or flow aid

It's actually meant to be a "Crusade" of Black Templar, i know going with anything other than black is non-fluffy, but i love the colours!

It came from a book my girlfriend was reading for her history degree, about a Templar order called "Sanctum Ornus Templum" which translates to something similar to "Sacred Ash Templars"

The name was Awesome and i loved the black templar rules!

Why white shoulder pads with such a bright body? I thing that they will look almost the on a painted mini.

I agree with an00bis in that there are lots of colors there.

I also don't like how the symbol on the chest and the eyes have a color very similar to the one in the rest of the armor, i think they should contrast, specially the eyes.

I did like that you used the red to draw attention to the power first, it emphasized that it's no ordinary fist in my opinion.

I'm also not sold on the interaction between black and red with that beige, but that may be personal opinion.

About the paints, it's a very personal thing. I only use Vallejo paints and i'm fine with that. Do remember that if you are going to get metallics get GW or Vallejo Air Color. If you are going to get washs get GW. I suggesting diluting with normal water, i don't see a need to use flow improver when you are beginning. Even most pro painters i know seldom use it. I don't use them myself too.

well there are many days in a week that i rethink lightly that going for DA instead of BT was agood decision. to make a new scheme and still do BT doesnt help me^^
i think your scheme looks lovley and would be a great looker on the table. and do write some more fluff, the sound is promising^^

Well, Tabris, I use the black, red and white to actually link it too the chapter i based it off "The Black Templars" so I tried to shoehorn them in somewhere!
I'm glad you like the power fist i thought the red was far better than maybe doing it white or black ya know?

Thank you Viktor! I always worry that by NOT painting BT black im going to incur the wrath of some fluff nazi!

as mentioned in this forum and an opinion of my self: its your minis, your paint, do what you like, stuff the fluff nazis, also original BT look to monotone...depressive and you have to sit infront of them minis for way to long if your not fully into the scheme and fluff your doing...
so crate your own and be proud of it. if someone wants of the rack marines the should do some smurfs^^

Wow, that is one really nice colour scheme! I especially like the fact that it has a deeper meaning and a premade legacy to go with it, it adds that much more believability to the fluff, and given their name I think using them as a successor chapter spawned from the BT would be good.

As for beginning painting, some excellent videos to help you with choosing brushes and paints are the awesomepaintjob.com tutorials. The two latest videos from the guy that runs that site are all about the brushes he uses and the differences between them. Its a bit in depth, but its a good explanation of the importance of their uses (and to break it down so you don't have to watch 25 minutes yourself, he highly recommends Army Painter brushes for beginners). I haven't watched the 'Paints' video yet, but i assume he gives the same treatment to the different brands of paints. As far as i know with regards to paints, GW and Vallejo are all but the same with regards to consistency, but I think people prefer Vallejo because its a bit cheaper and they offer a more comprehensive line of colours, including some colours that the GW range discontinued (aswell in coming in a handy dandy dropper bottle IIRC). They may or may not be different in their make up however, I'll let someone more knowledgable than I help you with that.

Good luck! I look forward to seeing some progress pictures soon!

For brushes you should go to your local art store, they'll have a better selection and prices.

For paints you can stick to GW for the Foundation Paints, metallics and Washes, but you should use Vallejo Game Color for the rest.
That is only if you want to have the GW colors (which Vallejo copies). If you don't want them, Reaper is a good alternative. I have never used P3 (Privateer Press Paints) but some people I use them, their main complaints is that the quality is hit or miss, buy two of the same color and one could work very well and the other not so much.

For thinning you can simply use water, but if you want better I recommend Liquitex flow aid.

Well, in the very few accounts there are of the actual "Sacred Ash Templars" it's noted that they were just the heretic killers of their time! Unlike the Normal Crusader knights who were spured on by the promise of wealth, the SA Templars simply went to the Holyland to spill blood for god and that was their only reason!

My fluff essentially was something along the lines of Chaplain Grimaldus sent them to Purify a settlement on a planet taken over by an Ork Weirdyboy and his "Klan", during the assault the Crusades Marshal drove his blade into the Weirdboy's throat killing him, but the vast "Waaaaagh" power the weirdboy possessed was sent coursing through the Marshall, ending his life and turning him to Ash instantly.
When the battle is over, the Crusades "Champion" found the Marshall's remains and was so saddened by the death of the Marine who trained him from a Neophyte, he took the ash and used it too colour his armour, the rest of the Marines, so moved by the champions sign of devotion took on the Ash colour in remembrance of the Marshall.
Upon returning to Grimaldus, a New Marshall was chosen to lead the crusader fleet, and they were given dispensation by Grimaldus to re-paint their armour this ashen colour and then took on the name "Sacred Ash Templars" and took off on a new crusade to wipe out all traces of the Ork Warboss whom the "Weirdboy" was serving!

Obviously, it's a load of crap! And im sure it's filled with loads of inaccuracies fluff wise!

And thank you, everyone who liked the scheme!..It's very encouraging and i will get painting soon!

that fluff gave me goosebumps reading it, its so awesome. I think the paint scheme will look great, but you might want to have the knees be the same color, and change the left trim to red only on powerfist models.

I like the sceme, but the coils on the chest and mask(and the mask's grille) should be silver, not gold.

I'd recommend a spray for the base colour - getting a clean, even bone can take a lot of time otherwise. I'd undercoat with any White Primer, then try and find a bone-coloured spray - maybe the Humbrol range have something?

It'll make the clean base colour easier to achieve across infantry and vehicles and get you started on the detail quicker.

So rather than the Burnished Gold i used on the Painter, i should use something like maybe Boltgun Metal?..Or Mithril Silver?

I'm really glad you liked the Fluff BlackMojo!...I really tried my best!

Bleached bone would be a good armor color, I'm saying boltgun metal for the coils and grille.
