well, I hate metal models firstly. so this sparks my hatred for the sternguard models.

Also, I abseloutley hate the look of the sternguards, they just look like marines with trills.

I feel like giving my possible sketch-in sternguards some even more trills!

So, I'm taking a five-manner of them, and I'm thinking dark angels conversion bits,

Verdict?

I just abseloutly love the idea of robed veterans.

Anyway, Does anyone know if I have to get them via GW, or can I get them in a store, [Queensland, maybe on the coast.]

Sure. I'd allow you to use regular Tactical Marines with a different color stripe on their helmet, if that's what you wanted to do, as long as WYSIWYG is followed with the weapons.

As long as it has the upgrades modelled on you can use scouts for all it matters

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Yup, any power armor mini can be used for Sternguard/ Vanguard. Just make sure the upgrades are modelled appropriately.

I'm still undecided on SG in my force, but they'll be FW MK IV or MK V suits.

The Space Marine Command Squad kit contain five Should Pads with Crux Terminatus symbols on them, which are excellent for denoting Veteran status.

Well, I'm a big WYSIWYH fan. I abseloutely hate people who play with boltes as carnifexes, and bolters as plasma cannons.

Yeah, they'd be the WYSIWYG.

But I think the DA would work well for their robedness.

They'd also need a razorback.

How exactly do you model WYSIWYG for specialized ammunition? The targeters are not indicative of anything in their profile from what I can tell. I would prefer to use regular marine figures, and paint their helmets and guns differently than the rank-and-file marines so as to have them stand out.

I also hate metal figs unless it's some kind of special character with a really cool sculpt. Too hard to customize them without resorting to drills and saws and such. I like me a good old fashion modelling knife and some glue. Plastic is cool like that.

I like beaky Mk VI helmets to differentiate veterans, as it's older model armor.

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

I'm both chaotic and orderly. I value my own principles, and am willing to go to extreme lengths to enforce them, often trampling on the very same principles in the process. At best, I'm heroic and principled; at worst, I'm hypocritical and disorderly.

Ditto. Those Umbra Ferrox Bolters are absolutely beautiful.

The best way to model for special ammo is the box clips. Cut them off spare storm bolters (maybe from black reach terminators that have been converted, thats what i did) cut the clip off a bolter, and attach box clip.

Alternatively, use the forge world variants (umbra ferrox as named above)

I like veterans to be ornate, but that doesnt mean yours have to be for you to field sternguard. I share your hate for metal, so I made some really cool models for sternguard.

Tac marines with some differentiation and a bit of explanation before the game are absolutely fine, as long as their not exactly the same (IE you cant accidentally mix them up with a combat squad to fool your opponent)

I would allow this, specially cause I did it myself. I used a lot of the BA new parts and also some pre-heresy bits just to add those extra 'veteranry' details.

Like you and others already mentioned WYSIWYG is important but with so many kits about that won't be an issue. I also prefer plastics to metal although I wouldn't go as far to say I hate them! Buts thats another reason I made my own!

No. I'd much rather buy a box of Tacticals and paint their helmets differently than buy metal models. Which is why my Sternguard are Tacticals with their helmets painted differently and scopes on their bolters.

Use whatever you like for the Sternguard so long as they meet WYSIWYG.

Heh. My entire Space Marine army have MkVI helmets, so every squad I buy is a ridiculous business of scraping together enough beaks to give everyone matching helmets. That's when I'm not trying to collect matching Berzerker helmets for my Chaos Space Marine army. Frankly the Forgeworld MkVI armour is a godsend. Plus the aforementioned bolters and the special weapons pack.

I just used normal tactical marines, but loaded them with extra equipment and different pad markings.

I also replaced the clip with the ammo drums from IG Grenade Launchers to represent to specialty ammo. Oversized, but looks alright.

I did vanguard vets using the tabbards from the Black Templar upgrade box.

You're sternguard should look fine with the Dark Angel robes. Kuddos for making them look different from standard marines, though.

You could just use normal marines, but I like my Sternguard and Vanguard vets to stand out.

The sterns pretty much look like adorned tacs. they don't look really special, and it's sad.... they could be so beautiful.

You know, like those abseloutely amazing honour guard models.

But, alas, I don't need three marneus calgars.

Does anyone know what the dark angels veteran marines come with? I'm thinking it'd be cheaper then a tac squad and upgrade.

I need 10 sterns, no special weapons.

I've been looking at using the Commander's torso for the cape and tabbard, and his combi-melta for my plastic Sternguard, but I'm not sure what else to do with them, if I used the commander's arms I need to figure out what their left hands are doing. Sure I could give one of them an auspex to examine, but 5 of them doing looks like a bunch of teens texting... Same with the pointy arm, you can only have so many people in a squad pointing at yonder foe.

I use the Crux Terminatus shoulder pads, plus a quick fix is to use spare terminator box mags on bolt guns. Then just add a Master of the Chapter, for the Sergeant and it's all gravy!

Hope these ideas help
