Mexican Independence
Day celebration
recognizes 200 years of
freedom
By JAMES NOONAN
Created: 09/16/2010 02:30:25 AM PDT
For those who were unaware that the struggle for
Mexican independence began with a fervorous call
to arms, the climax of the bicentennial celebration at
Woodland Community College left no doubt.
Following two-hour program showcasing Mexican
culture, heritage and cuisine on Tuesday, Carlos
Gonzalez Guitierrez, consul general for Mexico in
Sacramento, took the stage for the evening's finale
-- the delivery of the traditional "El Grito."
Since Sept. 16, 1810, when Rev. Miguel Hidalgo
delivered the first "grito de la independencia," or
"cry of independence," from the tower of his church
in Dolores, Mexico, a message reminiscent of his
original address has been echoed annually by
Mexican presidents, governors and consuls across
the globe.
Gonzalez, who began his remarks with a somewhat
soft-spoken commentary celebrating the unique
"partnership" between Mexico and California, flipped
the switch in an instant to suddenly swell with
patriotic zeal as he began "El Grito."
"¡Mexicanos!," he proclaimed with a booming voice,
before honoring the various patriots who played
vital roles in Mexico's war for freedom.
"¡Viva Hidalgo!," he cried. "¡Viva Morelos!"
Following each statement, the crowd of more than
one hundred people responded with an emphatic
"¡Viva!" of their own, some waiving Mexican flags
and applauding as Gonzalez entered "El Grito's"
traditional closing.
"¡Viva Mexico!, ¡Viva Mexico!, ¡Viva Mexico!,"
Gonzalez said, triggering a thunderous round of
applause and the playing of the Mexican national
anthem.
Before the dramatic conclusion to the night's event,
Woodland Mayor Art Pimentel touched upon the
importance of recognizing the bicentennial for any
community -- let alone one that consists of roughly
40 percent Latinos.
"Regardless of where we are, I think the 200th
anniversary of a country's independence is
something that's worth celebrating," he said.
During the festivities, audience members, including
dignitaries such as Assemblywoman Mariko Yamada,
Woodland Vice Mayor Skip Davies and WCC Trustee
Xavier Tafoya, were treated to a musical performance
by the Sacramento-based "Rondalla Voces
Románticos" band and numerous dance numbers by
Folklorico Latino de Woodland.
Guests were also well fed, as event sponsor Silvina's
Basket provided a spread that included quesadillas,
salsas and ceviche, a Mexican seafood dish
consisting mainly of tomatoes and shrimp.
As friends and family members socialized, dined
and celebrated together, the focus of the night's

So, they were celebrating Mexico's independence in Sacramento, CA?
I'm not trying to start a flame war or be accused of being racist, however, if you're living in the US (and you've been naturalized) why would you celebrate Mexico's Independence? If you are a citizen of the US shouldn't you be more concerned with celebrating the 4th of July?
I guess I just find that odd. And maybe it's because I've never moved to another country and was naturalized. I do understand celebrating one's cultural/ethnic heritage though.

1. California was part of Mexico when it freed istself from Europian colonialism, as was Texas.
2. There are 10+ MM people in California who are 1st -3rd generation from Mexico itself.
3. It celebrates the beginning of the end of European oppression in Latin America. The first was Mexico.
4. Dude, its an excuse to party!

That's a little harsh - thousands of Irish emigrated to the States but still celebrate St Paddy's day (mainly as an excuse to get bladdered but that's an aside).
Moving to another country should not be a reason to lose sight of your cultural heritage and identity.

Happy Birthday, Mexico!
No worries, DarkAngelHopeful. St. Paddy's Day, Boxing Day, Cinco de Mayo, 4th of July and other reasons to party and drink are all socially acceptable here in Houston.
To be honest, I saw more coverage of Cinco de Mayo here in Houston than the celebration of Mexico's 200th birthday.
Edit: How come earlier in your thread your flag is not the USA flag, but later it is? I'm assuming you're deployed oversees by your picture, but I can see 2 different flags by your name in this thread. Weird...

Because I can teleport. Alternatively, it's because I posted from two different computers here (I'm deployed).
