I've had a few over the years, a Fender Tele, an Epiphone Flying V, assorted Squier Strats - nothing flash really.
At the moment I'm not playing guitar in my band, just vocals, but I have a Yamaha APX-500 for writing songs on. Again, it's nothing flash - just a sturdy, servicable workhorse of an electro-acoustic guitar. When I bought it I was playing on the open-mic circuit a lot and wanted something fairly cheap and cheerful in case it got nicked or damaged. It suits my needs.
I also have a 12-string and another Yamaha 6-string.
My pride and joy however, is my Tama Rockstar kit:
Never get to play it much these days...
Please note: These are not ACTUAL pictures of MY instruments
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Oof! I bought it 7 years ago! The ol' brain ain't what it used to be...
IIRC, I spent about 850-900GBP on the kit itself. The hi-hats (UFIP - proper fething gucci!) cost me around 200 just on their own! I got Protection Racket cases for all my stuff - they're all kinds of awesome (sheepskin interior, neoprene padding) and all kinds of expensive. Also, I swapped out my snare for a Chad Smith custom thingy - not that I think he's great or anything, it was just huge! That was another 200, plus I added a crash, crash/ride and ride (by Paiste). All told I spent about 2K. I'm not rich - I had to get a loan.
I saw it as an investment, which to a certain extent it is - I'll never have to buy another kit, in all probability.
Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty. Got it about 10 years ago, and the quality of the body on it puts the current "true" Gibson Les Paul bodies to shame. Weighs a metric ton though.
But my true love - Access Virus TI

Fender Jazzmaster (black, player model), my go-to guitar
Fender Jaguar sunburst standard
Fender Stratocaster (Billy Corgan model, white). I hate the sound of almost all strats, but the dimarzio pickups on this are amazing and it has a great sound
Ibanez RG-something (7 string, black, the budget version)
Epiphone custom SG (cream and gold)
Yamaha pacifica (wood effect)
Amps are some budget marshal offshoot and a mesa boogie express 550 (I think that is the number, too lazy to check)
Also have a yamaha something keyboard, Hohner jazz bass and a cheapo violin

:O Wow, money bags!
Not really, I've been playing for about 15 years now so that is a lot of birthdays/xmases/gradual upgrades.

As you can see, I am ready to rock at a moments notice.
I never took guitar, I was a drummer and pianist. Though I haven't had the chance to do either in years; got caught up in school and living in places that wouldn't allow kits.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
What are you trying to play? Whatever you do, don't buy some sort of 'First act' thing.
I've got a fender Starcaster. It came with an amp, but It was complete , so I took it apart and use it as a foot stool. I bought a behringer amp (pretty small, nice grunge sound)
I hate my guitar though. It has terrible feedback and the neck and middle pickups are completely worthless. I'm considering going the eddie van halen approach, putting a nice Humbucker in there and ripping the other two out. The body is great, and the neck is a dream, the bridge is okay (Die cast metals suck. I'll probably just put in a standard fender bridge).
But anyway. For the money I'd be spending on making this one better, I might as well buy a MIM strat!
I've got a cheap-o black Fender CD-60 acoustic that I bought just to have with me when I'm overseas, and I've got my pride and joy:
Epiphone '66 SG Limited Edition reissue. That silverburst sure is awful purrdy!
If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.
Golden Eyed Scout wrote:What would you guys recommend for a beginner guitar? That is preferably dirt cheap.
You can pick up a Squier Strat for dirt cheap and they are pretty solid for a beginner. Alternatively, any sort of Epiphone Les Paul or SG would suit your needs - although they are a touch more expensive. What's your budget?
Ges: You'd probably like an Ibanez....Most of them are 'dirt-cheap', I suppose. Some of them are in the low 200's although I have no idea how good they are.
Personally, I find ibanez guitars to be rather ugly, harsh and jagged, but I guess some people like that.

About a hundred bucks. I'll (hopefully) be getting a job soon, so the budget will increase, but for now, that is about as much as I'd be willing to drop.
I have a Agile Hornet...pretty good quality and a nice price as well.
Not to mention it looks fantastic.
If you're looking for a cheap and decent quality electric guitar, Rondo Music has a nice selection. That's where I got my Hornet. I'm pretty sure they have acoustics as well.

If you just want to learn how to play, I guess you can get something from walmart.....I wouldn't, but for a hundred bucks, I think you can get something.
