So I'm sitting here, eating a panzerotti, and drinking some coke. And then the thought occurs to me, why are the tops of some pop cans "silver" and others more "bronze?"

Pop is Soda.

I've had many discussions with people from various parts of the states on this. This is what I've learned so far.

Utah = pop
California = soda

I can't remember any other states or regions right now. I do know that in some southern states say coke for everything.

Anyone else have any state or regional knowledge on whether you use pop, soda, or Coke to identify soda pop?

In the end pop = soda = coke = soda pop. It just depends on where you're from.

DarkAngelHopeful

EDIT: Places and what they call Soda Pop
Canada = pop
Utah = pop
California = soda
Texas = Coke
Minnesota = pop
New York = soda
Michigan = pop
Scotland = bottle of ginger
'The South' = Coke
Idaho = pop, soda, soda pop
UK = soft drinks, In the north = pop
Australia = soft drinks, lolly water
Pennsylvania = soda (central, eastern), pop (western)

Volume of soft drink/soda/pop/soda pop
Australia = 375 ml
UK = 330 ml
US = 12.0 fl. oz.

Here in Canada, it's generally refered to as pop, while some will use the term soda. They are interchangeable though. While the word coke, wither means Coca-Cola, or cocaine.

The bronze ones are where the peasent children who work in the can production camps fell into the machine, staining the metal with their blood.

The silver ones are just the ones they spat in.

You don't even ant to know what the "gold" cans are the result of...

Over here we usually call them 'soft drinks', which is because they're not 'booze'. Unless of course they're being used as 'mixers' - although the buzz-word is 'alcopop' when they're sold pre-mixed.

IG, lots of posters on forums all over the interwebz post their handle or name at the end of their posts. It's odd, but hardly worth of one of your typically sarcastic remarks. Not that I need to remind everyone, since you constantly make sarcastic remarks and value judgements.

Have to say that we use "soft drinks" as well, at least most places I've been in the UK do anyway.

Its actually how you can tell if a rat has defecated on the can or not. I will let you guess which color has the poop on it.

I have called it both soda, pop, and even a soda pop. I am originally from Idaho. Its like the whole movie thing. I live on the east cost and if you call a movie a show they get all made at you because a show is a play or TV show. Whatever crazy people.

We say coke in the south.

'Do you want a coke?'
'Sure."
'What kind?'
'Diet Dr. Pepper, if you got it.'

As for why some cans are "silver" and some are "gold" or "Bronze", it's probably a combination of the companies marketing department picking a pleasing color for their coke cans combined with how cheap the manufacturer of the cans can get various metals to make the cans with.

Metal is extemely expensive these days.

You can add Michigan = pop on there.

My oldest brother has lived all over the world (Marine MSG) and now we argue over what its called. He says that since everywhere else says soda, its soda. And I argue, its fine that the rest of the world is crazy, here in Michigan its pop.

Anyways carry on with the weird color thing

I know they do...doesn't make it any less annoying to me.... it's like people who have a giant "POWERED BY HONDA" sticker on their Honda..... ಠ___ಠ

And that is what I am here for.

anyway. I say soda...I said pop when I was a kid, the first time I went to new york when I was 12, I remember asking a waitress what kind of pop they had, and she gave me the weirdest look.

You know, it's made with soda water...so it makes sense. I say potato chips because they are made out of potatoes...not oogly boogly chips...but I would eat oogly boogly chips....

Who knows how colloquialisms develop. However, I imagine that those in the southern states call it "coke" because Coke was created in the south.

Yeah, my name is in my signature, where it is supposed to go, if one is so inclined....I don't include it at the end of every post as part of the text.

Yeah, it's weird when people use the brand to refer to the thing - a lot of people call vacuum-cleaners 'hoovers' here.

I fail to see any significant difference between ending your post with your name and putting it in your sig... Either way, it's below all your words.
And as previously stated, in Minnesota it's called (rightfully) pop.

With great pleasure,
